| [motherboard] New mobo losing video
I installed a new Gigabyte MA78GM today. It's an AMD 780G chipset with onboard ATI HD3200 graphics. Also installed a new AMD 4850e CPU and 2 GB new Kingston DDR800 memory. Did a repair install on WinXP Home SP3, loaded all the drivers that came with the mobo and everything seemed fine...until the monitor went black (old Optiquest CRT).
The computer was still on but I couldn't tell if anything was happening (the HD LED in the case is not working or I hooked it up backwards) so I killed the power. Removed and reconnected both ends of the D-sub cable and restarted. After CHKDSK ran, everything seemed fine until it happened again 15 min later. Screen just goes black, doesn't seem related to anything going on with the computer.
It has happened 3 times so far. I'm hoping it's the monitor but the fact that after restarting, everything works again makes me suspicious. My next step is to try an LCD monitor with DVI input.
It there's anything else I should look at, please advise. |

| Sounds like a heat issue. I'd run thermal monitoring software or check in BIOS, or both. Your CPU might be overheating due to improper mounting of the heat sink.
Did you clean the heat sink with proper cleaner, NOT touch the surfaces with your fingers, and did you PROPERLY apply thermal compound as per directions?
Try unplugging the power supply first (important!) and then replugging RAM and Video.
Your monitor might be defective as well. Can you use some other monitor to see?

It may also be the onboard graphics system. Got a video card you can plug in and test? |

First thing you might try is get the latest drivers directly from Gigabytes website and install and reboot to see if that fixes things,2nd thing to do is try a different monitor, 3rd thing try a video card(disable onboard video) in a slot,and 4th consider the fact you might have short or your motherboard might be a dud. Generally when I upgrade I use all new parts and leave my old computer as a spare until I've used the new one for awhile. Your old monitor might be the root cause possibly. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I think my topic title is pointing people in the wrong direction. I should have said "new mobo, CPU & video didn't cure problem" which is the system is locking up randomly and the video disappears a couple seconds later (the last time it happened, I noticed the mouse cursor froze just before the screen went blank.)
Whatever is causing the problem, since it has continued after a mobo, cpu, video and memory swap, pretty much rules out those components (and their drivers which have all changed as well.)
I don't think it's the monitor because the prior system did the same thing with an LCD monitor. I suspect a software issue and the two things that have remained the same between old and new hardware are the OS (XP Home w/SP3) and ATI video drivers (though the driver level is not the same). At some point I will probably do a fresh install but I'm really wondering if there's something going on with the ATI drivers. I know I had upgraded them on the old hardware in the last couple months and I'm thinking the problem started sometime after that but not so soon as to immediately suspect the driver update. Pointing away from the drivers is the fact that I have another very similar socket A system with the same drivers and video cards as this one prior to the upgrade and it doesn't exhibit the problem.

Final update for anyone who might be interested. I did a fresh install of XP Pro SP3 and still had the problem. I deleted the video adapter (onboard in the 780G chipset) in device manager and let Windows reinstall it automatically. That seemed to have solved the problem. I have been running for 3 days now without a single incident. |
