What could be blocking port 443?

Hi
Ive gone through 2 new routers recently and reformatted a pc downgrading to XP to solve a problem that I still can't pinpoint. I used to run a vpn tunnel from my home pc to my work pc through port 443. Im trying to set it up again and I cant get it to work. My OS is win XP. Im using a new linksys router set to forward port 443 for my pc's internal ip address on the network. My provider is optimum online. I have no firewall running now. I ran a port scanner on 443 and it said it isn't responding on port 443 (https). I run putty from home configured for either the localhost or for my ip address and it reports network error: connection refused or times out. Windows firewall is off. What else could block 443? Could it be something OOL s doing? Thanks

Re: What could be blocking port 443?

So your trying to setup a VPN, using TCP Port 443 (SSL), from work to home to access the home LAN?

You mention PuTTY so I presume your running a SSH server listening on TCP Port 443 versus the default TCP Port 22? If so did you remember to restart the SSH server after making the port change in the sshd_config file?

Beyond that...

If you go to the »www.canyouseeme.org site from the home server does the test pass?

If so then the test from work may be because the work admins are blocking TCP Port 443 outbound.

If the test fails then either your router is not passing TCP Port 443 traffic because the port is not open, or your port forwarding scheme is negated by not using the correct LAN IP of the server or your ISP is blocking TCP Port 443 inbound to you.

Can you connect to the server PC using TCP Port 443 from another PC on the same home LAN using the servers LAN IP address? If not then check the server to make sure the program you want to connect with is running, the firewall on the server is not blocking that port, etc. If you can connect then its a issue with the router or your ISP.

Remember when calling the server from another PC on the same LAN it may not be a valid test to call using the public IP of the router. Many consumer grade routers do not support loopback.
