| Mandatory account update -- NO static IPs for residential :( I just received a note from DSL Extreme say that my service area is being updated and I must change to one of the new plans - by August, one month before my contract is up anyway. (Morgan Hill, CA area)
Unfortunately, there is no provision for static IPs on any of the new plans, but there is now a faster tier (5M vs the current max of 3M).
I am a long-time customer, longer time internet hobbiest and open source developer. I run my own DNS/LDAP/KRB5/SMTP/HTTP/IMAP/etc. services for my own experience, FOSS support, and to assist family and friends -- IE definitely not a commercial enterprise....
However most of this requires static IPs (yes I know about the various dyndns options - but being a hiddent DNS primary doesn't work very well on a dynamic IP - btdt, got the scars)
Is it true that static IPs are now only for commercial accounts ? If so, can I get a quote on that price so I can do informed shopping for an ISP that continues to supports what DSL Extreme has done for me and others for many years ?

We are making a change in a small Verizon area in Northern California that is effecting a handful of clients. An email was sent out to those clients on Friday and follow up letters / calls to those clients will follow. Under the new network for that handful of clients static IPs will no longer be supported for either consumers or businesses. Unfortunately if you fall in that small footprint we will no longer be able to provide you with a static IP.
To clarify, this isn't a change across our entire platform or a change in policy but rather due to a change in that specific area. We will still continue to provide static IPs to both consumers and businesses across the rest of our network that we currently have them available in.
We do have some very aggressively priced higher speed packages. With this we introduced a new 5000/768 package for those clients that don't qualify for the full 7100/768 package.

BBR shows a COVAD POP in my CO, is there a chance to be moved there ? (I know you use COVAD at other verizon locations) ... Ah, indeed COVAD site shows they'll sell me business dsl (but not residential)

Whilst the speed bump would be nice, it doesn't help the fact that I rely on static IPs for many of the services  And yes, I'm fully aware of the various DYNDNS workarounds - and there are serious problems with DYNDNS for some services... The biggest reason I switched to DSL Extreme was the fact that it provided statics (and didn't charge an arm and leg for them)

| I wish I was just losing my static IPs. Despite having had the 7.1M/768k package for three years, apparently I'm now only qualified for 768k/128k. :-(
DSLX customer service have been nice, but unable to explain either why this is happening, or what my other options are.
Would switching to a dry loop help?

Still, all are quite a bit more than what we pay now
I'm starting to plan for a VPS setup, which, when completed, will allow me to run pretty much any connection - without the need for static ips.

Similar to doing a Co-Location setup, but instead of buying/renting/shipping them a machine, you get a virtualized server (xen, kvm, vmware, etc).
Usually you have full control, from os install to packaged software, reboots, etc from a web control panel. Many allow you to scale the size of the machine, its bandwidth, etc.
I need to be able to build a Debian (Sid/unstable) based server to handle DNS, KRB5, LDAP, sendmail, ....

| I tried to go with a COVAD reseller (Interlync,) but they were HORRIBLE, and it was partially due to AT&T's fault, not putting me on the other cable pair. But clearly the stupid people at Interlync didn't really want to really fix the problem why was I at 12,600 feet.
This is a problem I had in the past, why DSL Extreme only qualified me at 3.0 Mbps, but I was only synced to 1984, and I really didn't understand why, so when Comcrap came to my neighborhood, I then canceled DSL Extreme.
Then, Comcrap started capping, and that is when I needed to go back to DSL, and thus I tried to go with Interlync, because I needed more IPs, despite DSL Extreme do COVAD ADSL2+ orders, it just that, for reasons unknown to me, and despite COVAD themselves do offer more static IPs.
Now, I chose to both contact Interlync and Cyberonic, two COVAD resellers, that offer multiple IPs, and both of them told me I was at roughly 5,500 feet, but after I chose Interlync, the COVAD Installer came to the house, and tested my line, and I was actually at 12,600 feet.
Now, sadly, DSLX_Zak was right, COVAD does have very funny prequals.
Today, thanks to Dan Laguna at AT&T engineering, I am no longer at 12,000 feet, and when the technician came to my house (not Dan Laguna,) I told him to change the cable pair, and now I have 5.2 Mbps DSL, under AT&T lines.
Lesson learned, if you are going to go with COVAD, make sure you ask your ISP (i.e. DSL Extreme) to contact the proper engineering department, before getting COVAD services, or any other DSL service.
It was mid-April, when I canceled Interlync, and they offered to give me a refund for the modem, if I return the modem, and I returned the modem, and as of this posting, I have not received my refund, for the modem return.
So do be aware, and save yourself the trouble, by going with COVAD directly, if you need COVAD services. | |

At Interlync we do try to satisfy the needs of our customers in every way possible. It sounds like the issues you experienced were due to loop length and not your DSL service. Unfortunately, loop length can be a deciding factor when it comes to speed of your DSL service. And we do offer IP's to residential services (Actually up to 254 IP addresses). | |
