Trying from USB and tried BT and no joy. 5 bars on 3G. I am resetting the phone at this point and trying again. |

1 edit | reply to yabos Strange thing. I plug it into my work PC and it worked fine. Hopefully it works on the iMac when I get home. I don't think it's a PC thing as the Dell Laptop I tried last night did not work either. I'm going on a trip for a week tonight and the iMac is coming too so hopefully this will work. I would still like to know if there is something special I have to do to set the iMac up to use this connection. SOmething I need to make sure is turned on?
*Edit* Ok, to further add to the madness, I tried it out on another PC and it did not recognize it as a ethernet connection. I believe my iMac and PC laptop to be up to date so why is it picking and choosing which computer it works with or is it something that needs to be installed on these computers to get this to work. Does anyone have an answer?
Side note - the one PC it worked on, I got almost 1MB download speed, and just shy of 400KB upload with 5 bars of 3G. Not too bad considering. |

|
Midak Doctors suck Premium join:2002-02-26 Yonkers, NY | 8.2 is installed on the iMac (not working) and on the PC (XP) that is working. The other two do not have iTunes. I thought you only needed iTunes to get tethering unlocked on the phone? |

I thought you only needed iTunes to get tethering unlocked on the phone? That is odd. I know if you plug an iPhone into Windows without iTunes installed, the correct drivers aren't installed. I'm not sure if Vista and Windows 7 come with the correct drivers, I just ASSumed that since the iPhone in tethering mode was automatically picked up and installed as a "Apple Mobile Device Ethernet" -- and the driver was provided by Apple on 4/30/2009 (netappl64.sys), that iTunes installed it. |

| So maybe a driver issue? Anyone to fix this on the iMac without losing all of my itunes settings, playlists, etc? I really want to bring the iMac instead of the Dell laptop with me on this trip since everything I currently use is on my iMac and the laptop just doesnt cut it anymore. Is there a way to force the iMac to look for new hardware and specify the iPhone ethernet adaptor? |

| reply to Midak I just tried this and, in fact, am posting this from my MBP connected through bluetooth to the iPhone which is tethering away. I had to pair the MBP with the iPhone; at the conclusion of that process, it said it was creating the net "Personal Area Network" which shows up in my list of networks.
I was unable to connect to the phone as long as my BT mouse was on, however. Once I turned that off, it worked great. I just turned the mouse on again and both appear to be working. Yay!
Still no luck with the MMS thing, however. |

| reply to yabos Ok, this is really frustrating. I can now get it to work on two PC's but still not on the iMac. The second PC only worked once I installed iTunes 8.2, which I do have on the iMac. I am leaving in an hour and really want to get this working. Does anyone know how to force the iMac to search for this network connection or install a driver? Anyone? |

| reply to yabos I tried this out and it worked great. This is so much easier then the way had to do it under 1.x and 2.x. I put up a tutorial for both USB and Bluetooth for Mac users.

| reply to yabos I did the tethering hack and now my battery meter seems to stick at 100% sometimes. I'll charge it at night and it will be fine the next morning but stay at 100%. After a few hours I'll reboot the phone and it will drop to something like 89% and start working normal from that point on.
Anyone else see this? -- -BKuhl

| reply to yabos I used the benm.at carrier update and MMS is working great. Have sent and received from people on AT&T and Verizon with no issues.
However.. the tethering option appears in my settings menu. When I enable it and connect to my PC it works for about 3 minutes then the connection drops and the tethering option disappears from the settings menu. If I re-load the carrier file from benm.at it comes back, but just disappears after a few minutes again.. anyone else experiencing this?
