The only thing is that I don't live in a neighborhood that has good 3G reception and it seems you need to have a 3G signal for it to work. As it stands, through Bluetooth, both the computer and the iPhone will acknowledge the connection.
Can't wait to try this out somewhere with 3G. I'm only going to use it cautiously - don't want to get hit with AT&T's BS data charges.

If any Windows users stumble across this thread, you need to open a command-prompt (in Administrator mode on Vista/7), navigate to the iTunes installation directory and issue the following command with iTunes closed:
itunes.exe /setprefint carrier-testing 1

It just depends on where I am at and how decent the WiFi is. I've only been able to pull 9 Mbit's at home, but then again, I have a 32 Mbit connection. | |

The only reason AT&T is holding off on letting us US customers officially have it is because they're trying to figure out a pricing scheme (and I should emphasize "scheme") for the product. That, and they are absolutely terrified we're going to destroy their network with such easy access through iPhones.
Is there a way to really check your data usage on an unlimited plan? My account won't let me log in right now for some reason.

| There might be a little confusion with the other link (»www.erodov.com/forums/mms-tether···ge4.html) over MMS. I don't think the OP's top post link enables MMS, only tethering, and no MMSC & proxy settings are required.
It's certainly the case for me- tethering works, but no mms with the camera icon in the message app UI. Correct me if someone has it working.

I'm sure you're right, and I need to clarify that I had already installed the IPCC file. I was then able to get and add the MMS settings from the help.benm.at site, which enabled MMS.
Since ATT doesn't plan on charging extra for MMS, it's less likely they will come down hard on it's 'unofficial' use. But they just might consider the tethering a theft of service. A ridiculous thought, but this is ATT.

I rode my bike 6 miles from the Oakland hills to the BKY station, rode around in Davis a bit, and then once arrived back at Berkeley, rode the 6 miles back home (which included 1 very steep 1.5 mile long hill).
Anyway, I'm a bit terrified of what AT&T is going to pull, given how widespread this tethering is at the current point in time.
I got this message on my account page:
U1536: Due to the recent change to your data feature, we are unable to display usage information until after your next billing cycle which begins on 07/01/2009. Now, I don't think I've actually ever looked at that data tab before, but this message was odd. I wonder if it was linked to the downgrade from the 1500 txt plan to the 200 txt plan that I requested yesterday?

As a reward for consolidating my mobile and landline bills, I get to pay 2 mobile months in arrears (because that's how long it takes them to implement this!) and one month ahead (because that's how they bill the mobile when you consolidate). I am digging into the carrier settings file trying to fix the VM bug so people don't have to manually change settings. I see there are several items under SupportedSIMs that probably indicate different AT&T sims. I'm wondering if one could edit that list to unlock the phone.
Anyway, if you rename the IPCC file to .zip, you can then double click it to unzip it and get a .bundle file. Open that up and you get to a carrier.plist file. Under apns, #1 is wap.cingular, whereas #3 is acds.voicemail. Fixing the bug may entail switching the two around.

1 edit | Strange thing. I plug it into my work PC and it worked fine. Hopefully it works on the iMac when I get home. I don't think it's a PC thing as the Dell Laptop I tried last night did not work either. I'm going on a trip for a week tonight and the iMac is coming too so hopefully this will work. I would still like to know if there is something special I have to do to set the iMac up to use this connection. SOmething I need to make sure is turned on?
*Edit* Ok, to further add to the madness, I tried it out on another PC and it did not recognize it as a ethernet connection. I believe my iMac and PC laptop to be up to date so why is it picking and choosing which computer it works with or is it something that needs to be installed on these computers to get this to work. Does anyone have an answer?
Side note - the one PC it worked on, I got almost 1MB download speed, and just shy of 400KB upload with 5 bars of 3G. Not too bad considering. | |

I'm not sure if Vista and Windows 7 come with the correct drivers, I just ASSumed that since the iPhone in tethering mode was automatically picked up and installed as a "Apple Mobile Device Ethernet" -- and the driver was provided by Apple on 4/30/2009 (netappl64.sys), that iTunes installed it. | |
