Americas Army too much for Steam

Have been playing the beta and very excited about the latest version, so pre-loaded it on Steam. Couldn't launch it today after several tries so deleted it to get it again....Steam server too busy....

Looks like it will be the weekend before I can play this jewel again....lol

Damn, I've been playing to much Day of Defeat Source and ignoring everything else! Just noticed someone playing AA3 on friends then went to the store to get it, but it won't pre-load!

Guess we're just gonna have to wait till the server load is down.

Ok so I can get in the game fine, registered an account on AA3, but can't join any servers.... and by any, I mean the large amount of 18-19 that are listed...

I'll wait till tomorrow and hopefully servers are more open

I am sure in a few days when more can download it and set up servers, etc. there will be 300+ servers soon considering it is free. Even pay-for games have many dedicated servers cause the ded-server software is often free. Just give it time.

Add to the fact that AA is a highly popular game that has been around for a long time now. I've been playing it since it's initial release off and on since 2002.

There will be plenty of servers in a few days.

Downloaded it overnight, but the account creation screen seems to be hanging this morning. It appears old logins won't work, requiring a whole new profile.

Thats good, starting everyone off on a levle playing field.

Besides, from having played the beta, there is so much more to this new version that the most seasoned AA players should go through training again.

The maps, deeper gameplay and graphics make this game better than the previous versions and certainly some games we have to pay for!

I guess I can say goodbye to this weekeknd...lol

What kind of bugs and what training won't transfer?
Is there even a training transfer option?

I was under the impression you had to perform all the training over again as this is, in a way, a new AA game not like the previous versions.

I haven't been able to try the game out yet.

I love it when people say the game is buggy or crappy but yet do not state what/why...

Explain your damn self!

Seems they were having issues with logins and I was unable to. Had to try the offline mode training. Seemed fine to me, but I do agree on one item, the graphics don't seem to be up to par on what they could be with the U3 engine. I set everything to max settings and I could still see jagged edges and other bland looking textures. Running it on a 4870.

Won't be able to judge other gameplay till I get logged in.

i cant even load any maps or trainings, it just freezes. Windows event manager shows the game stops responding. i cant load any 3d content in the game besides the menus.

the menus looks pretty though...

UE3 engine hates it when you change the location of My Documents to a root HDD, so that could be the cause of my problems here. however i'm running the steam version and other UE3 games fail to save configuration files so it resets all settings every time you exit, which AA3 does not. all my settings stay put i just cannot load any maps or trainings.

Can't access the link in the last post from work, but having played the beta for the last month I can address the criticisms of the game in this thread.

The game isn't crap, the maps are well designed, the gameplay flows really well, the new more detailed medic aspect is a great idea and the different settings are refreshing in an era when everything seems to be based around Iraq or WW2.

Its true the training has jaggys, but those disappear in the actual game. Dont ask me why they would do it but thats the way it was in the beta. Graphics look sharp in the game, run smoothly and are night and day compared to the most recent versions of AA.

Atmosphere is amazing. An apache flies overhead duing one level, in another accidently brushing against a windchime in an abandoned greenhouse gives away any stealth advantage.

One of the most memorable moments for me was when we met the opposing force on a field of knee high wheat that was dotted with the big rolls of hay, bundled for collection. I would like to say my master plan was to go prone and take everyone out, but I dived when the bullets went flying, only to have some bad guys walk right towards and by me once the shooting died down. They couldn't see me in the high grass!!! Four kills later I went onto the objective.

Controls are well implemented with realistic time needed to perform different actions such as reloading..etc.

Sure there were some frustrating times due to the beta being I dont know...a beta but towards the end, everything seemed to work well. The training (when it worked in beta) adds a further dimension not seen in the most recent version of AA.

Agreeing with JIGA, if you don't like the game, at least say why. Seems fair and easy to me.

Also, final thought....its a FREE FREAKIN GAME...get over it.

Mustang hit the nail on the head with how the game play should flow. It is a mix between CS and Operation Flash point from what PC Gamer says on their early preview.

Still haven't got a chance to try it out, might this evening.

LOL. After playing the obstacle course three times and having it try to authenticate forever each time, then having the game also freeze randomly twice during loading menus, I think I'll stick to non government-sanctioned games.

sanction: explicit or official approval, permission, or ratification

As the US Army is a function of the US government, and they clearly approve of this game, then I stand by my original statement.

At any rate, it doesn't change the fact that their servers weren't ready for the release.

Spent about 2 hours playing last night and I must say, this game is a blast. If you do not like tactical shooters, this game is not for you and it is much different from the previous versions of AA. It feels more fluid and real in my opinion. Kind of like OFP with updated graphics. I haven't had this much fun playing a game from this genre since OFP! I have always loved shooters, but more so along the lines of Rainbow Six, Rogue Spear, Urban Ops, Covert Ops, Raven Shield, OFP+Resistance, Joint Ops, and Arma. Those are the style of shooters I love and AA3 really brings that feel.

There are some problems, but nothing game breaking. For instance, I have ran into a few bugs, but nothing like what some of you guys said in here. Some of you act like this game is 100% bugs which it is not.

Double menu bug: When I hit ESC to bring up the menu sometimes it won't go away.
Training bugs: Mount course, there are 2 targets you cannot confirm, but I was still able to achieve Expert.
Multiplayer bugs: Unable to join some servers. Took me some time, but I finally found a server. Before it would load the map then kick me back to the main menu. Patience won.

Other than that, the game is very fun and highly tactical. The environments and sound, WOW, I really feel like I am there in a true firefight.

I don't see what you guys are hating on the graphics. They looked excellent to me on my 4870. I guess some people are just eye candy whores. Me... I'll take game play over graphics any day.

*EDIT* I do suggest staying away from the Steam distribution of AA3. There seems to be a few problems. I am about to try out the Deploy version of AA3 and see how that goes.

Re: Americas Army too much for Steam

I just played in a few small (6 vs. 6) games and it was a lot of fun. It's a nice departure from the run & gun type (COD 4) of shooters. All of the games my team won were because of teamwork, and calling out "enemy spotted" gets everybody focused.

I'm definitely going to play some more later.

What I love about it is the focus more on teamwork now. You get points sticking with a squad member, healing a soldier, or other duties. The lone wolfs seem to die a lot, the ones that stick together do the best. It's not all about killing the enemy, that only grants you one point per kill, but other stuff grants a lot more points.

Re: Americas Army too much for Steam

I agree. I played a couple of hours last night, and got shot a lot. But I was usually moving with 2 or 3 other soldiers and once they dealt with an enemy or two, they fixed me up a bit and we continued on.

Or we'd be moving and someone would shout "enemy spotted!" That enemy didn't last long most of the time.

I must say though, they should have made the enemy look a little different from your fellow soldiers. I was involved in 4 or 5 "friendly" fire incidents in 2 hours of playing.

Tried to give the game a fair shake as I really loved the original AA and AA2.

I could not qualify in the basic obstacle course. I'm not sure how I can go much faster than 1:04 through the course and it still failed me.

The double menu bug was terrible. Trying to play with my settings and that menu wouldn't go away.

I might give it another go in a few days. But right now, first impressions are terrible.

They have temporarily set everyone's training to fully completed due to auth server load. Everyone was trying to update their profiles and it was to much for their servers. Just head over to MP and play.

I think the game has potential, but at this point in time, it doesn't run smooth enough for my short attention span. It's hard to find a server that you can join without flaky things happening. Sometimes the screen freezes, or it says you are joining, yet it throws you right back at the screen to choose either training or multi-play gaming. I feel like I am half crippled trying to control my character. It's not as fluid as say BF2142, or COD4.

Part of my disappointment is just how the game play goes down. I'm not a big team player. I hate sitting there after being killed and waiting for the match to end before I get to play again. That bores me to death. Don't get me wrong, I like squad based games like BF2142, but the objective has to be my style. Sitting there waiting and not playing is no fun.

Anyhow, the game is ok, but the style of game play does not go over well with the way I like to play. As another person said, it's not for everyone.

Here is a great thread for fixes and tweaks.

There is an option on the AA2 site to reserve your name for AA3. I did that but was having issues registering and logging in with the temp password it provided. I went ahead and created a new account instead. When you launch AA3 head over to the account settings and there you can link your AA2 account, but for right now it does not seem to be working since they are having issues with their Auth server.

Once these bugs are worked out and the game gets smooth... it's going to be great. Well, it is now, but only better!

Then AA3 definitely isn't for you...I treat the time spent waiting for the next round as lesson learned for the next time.

Jiga is right, the work arounds are there. After playing the beta for a while, I couldn't log onto a server in the new released game. Thanks to a link from Jiga I found instructions to create a bat file that I run before starting the game and everything runs fine.

Also, did a clean reinstall using another download source other than steam.

Great game and looking forward to more maps.

A bit of news...

quote:
An Open Letter to the Community
Since the launch of America's Army 3 (AA3) on June 17, America's Army has seen data transfer demands upon our game infrastructure that far exceeded our expectations and capacity to support new game registrations and game play. Data transactions associated with all existing and new players attempting to complete the Basic Combat Training (BCT) portion of the AA3 game over the span of a few days overwhelmed our authentication and database systems. These sections of AA3 include key new features of the game that are particularly data intensive and which we clearly did not adequately load test during our closed and open beta process. As Director of the Army Game Project, I apologize for this gap in service and want to outline below the actions we have taken and are taking to close this gap.

First, AA3 is designed to provide players a great deal of data regarding their performance and key aspects of the online experience. As a result, compared with prior versions of America's Army, AA3 generates about ten times more traffic between game instances and our middleware and backend infrastructure. While we accounted for this level of data exchange when designing our AA3 infrastructure, we did not anticipate the unprecedented demand and data transfer levels we are witnessing as tens of thousands of players are simultaneously establishing accounts and working through the BCT portion of the Game. This was due to the fact that we did not adequately replicate the data transaction loads associated with this game activity during our beta test. As a result, immediately following the launch of AA3, we saw a mismatch between incoming data transactions and our infrastructure capacity. Therefore, we immediately began adjusting our infrastructure resources to maximize capacity and undertook substantial tuning of our database systems. Shortly after launch, we also discovered a hardware fault at our data center that created significant network lag. After addressing these faults, we achieved improvement in our infrastructure performance. However, demand for the game quickly consumed the capacity we created with the foregoing steps. Therefore, while we were able to support additional users, individual players did not see substantial improvement in game performance.

Since last Friday, to further improve system performance, we created a data handling modification for the game designed to moderate data flows during this launch period. This modification was released on Friday evening via Steam and our Deploy Client to automatically upgrade AA3 games installed on players' computers. Additionally, we began crediting all players for completion of BCT levels so that they could proceed directly to multi-player missions; thereby removing the bottleneck created by the high volume of players engaging in BCT maps and improving the overall player experience.

We also began addressing performance and stability issues on the game servers by implementing memory upgrades and adding more database nodes to carry the load of authentication and player stats traffic between game instances and our infrastructure. We are correcting map rotation reporting deficiencies and issues with the Master Browser System (MBS) that prevent players from identifying servers with available Soldier positions. To improve network traffic, we continue to tune game network code, add more game servers, and correct server administration features so that server providers can better manage their servers. Finally, we are remedying instances where we identified memory leaks and are reducing server memory requirements to eliminate network lag while increasing server stability.

In summary, we are working to add capacity, and correct faults that have significantly impaired player access to America's Army 3. We appreciate player patience as we ramp up our infrastructure to meet the demand that clearly exceeded our capacity on launch day.

It's a little frustrating at times. Last night was one example. I see this enemy coming down a shallow valley and get off a contact report. The lone enemy is flanked by the rest of my squad. I hear much gunfire, but the guy is still coming towards my position. I take a knee, lean out, put my aimpoint on his chest and rattle off 3 short bursts.
Then I die. And this single enemy runs into the basement through a tunnel. I've never seen so many people sat "WTF?" at the same time. I didn't know Rambo was a character in the game.

I'll probably play some more tonight.
