I live in NY and pay $17.74 in taxes and surcharges. In total I am paying $40.00.

name brand VOIP should have the same taxes, the days are over for no-tax VOIP unless your going with a start up

You have to compare the $24 Verizon cost to what you can get with VOIP and don't forget the cost if you go down to double play ( $27 in discounts vs $54 I believe it shows on the Verizon website)
