HDMI rcvr/tv -- auto select the display?

I've got my Vista MCE (SP2) system connected to my TV via HDMI through an Onkyo TX SR606 A/V receiver. The Vista box has a GeForce 8500 GT graphics card.

The problem is that when the receiver input isn't set to "computer", the computer doesn't recognize the receiver as a display. This means that I have to use the following steps to get everything talking right:

1) access the Vista box from another computer (via Radmin)
2) get the nvidia control panel up and view the "set up multiple dislays" panel
3) switch the receiver to "computer" input
4) back at the remote access session, select the receiver as the display
5) click "apply" and then "ok" within 15 seconds

At which time, the receiver and the vista box all play happily together. Until, of course, I switch the receiver to another input.

What I want is for the Vista box to automatically recognize and switch the display to the receiver whenever it become active. Is this even possible?

Re: HDMI rcvr/tv -- auto select the display?

Just connecting a HDMI cord to my VAIO does nothing if there is no equipment on the other end or it is not switched to HDMI input
As soon as I select HDMI on the equipment, the computer sees it and remembers my settings for that item.

Switching your reciever away from computer is effectively disconnecting the other end of that HDMI so the computer has nothing to recognize.

Now, on occasion, if I switch my equipmet to a different source, the computer lets go and starts displaying on it's own display.
Switching back is hit or miss. The computer may see the equipment again and connect accordingly - or not.

Vista Home Premium SP2 and nVidia 8400 GT.
FOR ME, it is just more reliable to pull the HDMI out while it is still sending data to the equipment and letting the computer swicth back to internal.
More times than not, if I plug the HDMI back in and select HDMI on the equip, it will connect again.

This happens the same way on my XP MCE 2005 VAIO as well.
Don't think it's a VAIO thing - a friend has a home-build that does the same.

Interesting but unfortunately, not ideal.

I fully understand why the computer doesn't "see" anything over the HDMI when the receiver is switched to something else.

What I'm looking for is a way to get the display to automatically switch back to the receiver when that HDMI connection is active. The computer obviously detects it because the receiver shows up in the dropdown of the nvidia control panel.

Perhaps I just need to fiddle with nvidia control panel some more (default display? setting up dual displays? there's got to be a way to do this...)

Re: HDMI rcvr/tv -- auto select the display?

Like I said, it's hit or miss merely switching inputs.
Sometimes it will just see it and work, other times it will not.

I'm suspecting it is an OS (Media Center) issue.

Mine *MIGHT* be because of having to choose one display only.
HDCP and Blu-ray will only allow one display at a time for playback.

No, it is not ideal - but it is what *I* have to do.
Beats restarting the computer when it doesn't work by switching inputs.

Querry:
If you select the reciever's input back to HDMI and let it stay there - will it eventually reconnect?
5 minutes?
10 minutes?
30 minutes?
Never tried it myself... just curious.
I'm too impatient.

Interesting question... but I suspect not. Will have to play around more with all this at some point.

And still open to suggestions if anyone has any

Well, we came up with a solution but it's not exactly a general approach

We have Intelliremote (»melloware.com/products/intelliremote/ - $24 for the server) installed on the HTPC and the free iPhone client.

Hubby used AutoIt (»www.autoitscript.com/autoit3/) to create a script that can be launched via Intelliremote so that once we switch the HDMI input to the HTPC, we can actually view the HTPC on the TV.

It's working like a charm Now I can control the HTPC without using another computer (man, I love iPhone remote apps )
