I agree with this. Not that VZ should be a "me too" as the cable co's claim, but if the aim is to compete with News 12 (and they need to) I see no choice but to treat this as primarily a news channel.

If you want to add local sports to the mix they should really consider covering Long Island Ducks games. I think you're right. The 'news' is mostly during morning and evening rush hours and scattered throughout the weekend.

there was an odd glitch on FiOS1 NJ just now.

The evening news anchor did an intro to the weather report and then the afternoon anchor did a toss to the weather reporter in studio with her. When the report was done the evening news anchor came back with a thank you.
I guess the wrong weather report was inserted into the video editing track for 7pm.

One other note that since FiOS1 started the guide is not giving the correct listings for all time slots, some times the listing are an hour to half hour off of the show on does match the guide.

billy, right now FIOS1 news is not as polished as News12, but it just started. Most of us got News12 years after it was started. However, FIOS1 does air some other programs, like Steven Shirippa's cooking show, which are good, and of course NJ staple Steve Adubato is there. Now I have seen some NY1 at some NYC friends' apartments, and I thought it was terrible.

The had a 2 hour newscast 5pm-7pm but it they shut that down about a year ago.
I wondered what would happen to the empty news studio and now we know it's being used for FiOS1.

The studio video looks very good today.
The FiOS1 animation intro for the sports and other segments don't have as much digital compression.

Some of the local reports, b-roll, and the ESPN baseball segment still look web quality.

The traffic report on now looked much better and they even had a traffic cam on the GWB.
I think they are starting with the map zoomed in a little closer so it does not look as bad when they zoom into it or they have given the report more band bandwidth.

One of the ESPNews reporters is doing baseball highlights.

I've noticed some of the national video seems to be coming from abc news.

For the 3pm report the studio video looks sharp but I still see video grain noise.
I think if the background behind the anchors was not fast animation it would look much better and require less bandwidth on the feed.

The traffic reports still need some work. The maps are full of digital compression and macroblocking when they are paned and zoomed.

The b-roll video for the non local stories and sports looks better but some if it still looks like web compressed video.

Just saw a report by Karen DePodwin in Weehawken, NJ area and the video looked web quality when she was interviewing people.

If the On Air quality has improved it was not by much.I get a headache watching the Traffic.It still is Bad still not much better with the news cast. In all honesty my 10 year old looked at it by chance and she stated that is looked like "Crap". I didn't even ask her opinion.

Slightly annoying to me. But it DOES get your attention. I do not see that going anywhere.I can live with it. We can all agree on the PQ. I will refrain from anymore comments until the PQ is fixed. That way the insight is more directed and we may all move on to the other issues at hand :)

The video quality is still not good. If they want people to keep watching they are going to need to fix it.

I don't know if the traffic reports are live or being taped and then broadcast but they to have way to much digital compression on them.

I did a check of the recording during the traffic report and the data rate got no higher then 3.4 MPBS to me that's way to low.
I don't encode videos for work lower then 5mpbs.

I think FiOS1 is using the format that Headline News uses on the weekends where the newscast is recorded and and then played back by a digital editing system.

There is supposed to be a 10am newscast on according to the guide but I'm getting the NJN PBS show Classroom Closeup NJ.

Those red moving lines at the bottom of the weather ticker have to go.
They are beyond annoying.

I've not seen a newscast yet but the quality on the NJN show was clean.
Some of the PSA and ads airing do not look clean as they do on other local channels.

Now the newscast is replaying at 10:30am.

The whole Newsflash including the FiOS1 animation has bad stuttering.
If they are going to replay the 5am newscast at 10:30am it might not be the best idea to call it Sunrise.

I will give them the slack that it's only the first day but
some of the b-roll file footage they are using in the reports looks it was taken from the internet.
Some of the reports have to much digital compression, even the studio stuff seems not as clean as it could be.

Anyone know if new weather and traffic reports are being inserted into the replays of the newscasts?

I'll give them a B for the 10:30am rebroadcast. Besides the stuttering on some reports there have been no tech glitches.

Well let me give my review.
Newscast on par with News 12 barely. I give FIOS 1 credit its only a few hours old and I will give it a month or so to get their act together.

Broadcast is HORRIBLE! It looks like its being broadcast over a Satellite phone very Grainy LOW Resolution and stutters a lot... I will give them a few weeks to Iron that out.

Hosts Newscasters. Well with a name like "Stone" he HAS to be a News caster :)
Over all a Good Try but it is a D- C at the best.. I will give FIOS1 the benefit of the doubt and give them 2 weeks for technical stuff 6 weeks for Content :)

But I'm goint to ASSume that even if the content itself is currently SD, the 501 feed to the box is upconverted to 720p or 1080i to be sent to the homes.
That way people won't get that momentary sync/black screen that happens on many TV's when switching between HD & SD signal stations ( Assuming you have the box's SD override set to native" 480i, for the SD channels).

The "Promo" has "snip it's" from what I would think were fron the "Interviews" of the probable reporters. One was a a Traffic report that was local to NNJ and New Jersey is "Splahed" all over the place on the promo. So is SEEMS pretty local.
At one point, the NJ promo also has the temperature for "Sag Harbor" at the bottom of the screen :)

Fios 1 may end up covering a somewhat similar size area, but they are trading N12NJ's southern & Western zones for closer NY counties.
No one is going to get a news channel devoted to a 15 mile radius of their home, but I think the best idea is to have this Fios 1 as a combined NNJ/LI/WestchRocklnd channel, as it seems to be. News12 NJ is ok but it's nothing special. All the non news casts and talk shows were pulled from the channel years ago.
They take the same 30min or hour news cast and repeat it until the next live news cast is done.
If I'm correct the AM news cast repeats till 12pm and then 12pm news cast is airs till 4pm or 5pm and that newscasts repeats till 10 or 11pm. Even the "major" news channels do this... For example, many local stories, about the "new plastic recycled benches" installed in FuttBuck County Park, or the cell tower sceduled to be completed in Sept , finally bringing service to the "lonely stretch of Rt 209" , or a piece about a local guy that invented a new can opener....
These are taped, edited & canned, & editors "decide" when they will air, based on time constraints, other news that is day-sensitive ect ...

FiOS1 may not be used as overflow, but it is not because they already have MSG2, etc.

I am not sure if they would be able to use it for overflow sports (ie, MSG+ - SD only, Billy2 - sorry) but that was a key part of FiOS1 in the DC market.
