| Doesn't surprise me anymore with AT&T. Honestly I don't think Verizon would be much better with the iPhone either. It's a huge data consumption and the US just stinks when it comes to mobile broadband IMO.
The thing that will be interesting is if they will allow the current 3G owners to upgrade to 3GS while under contract still. |

| Who said? I contacted my ATT rep and the area bosses are in a meeting. She will know once they come out.
If they don't let current 3G users upgrade to me that's a very bad move and loss of $$. At that point Verizon would be an option for me. |

Verizon used to let you if you signed a new contract, but even stopped that practice. |

| said by gdm :Not true. Last year 2G iPhone users could upgrade to 3G no matter where you were in the contract. That was a single instance, not the standard operating procedure. Even right now, you can't upgrade any AT&T (or Verizon, or Sprint) phone if you are in a contract without paying full price. The general consensus was AT&T/Apple offered it on the 1G iPhone because there were a lot of outraged users. |

It's on Apple's site, as well. Go through their "reserve an iPhone" deal and it'll tell you when you can get one for $199/$299.
Apple/AT&T don't owe you a new iPhone. |

I wouldn't pay $199 to upgrade my 3G right now. I don't see the value in the 3GS over my 3G and I've read a lot of folks who feel the same way. Of course there will be a contingent who HAVE to have it, but by-and-large, I don't think the upgrade is as compelling as the 1G to 3G iPhone upgrade was.
Sure, the new features are nice, but the 3GS itself, minus the 3.0 software, boils down to 4 "upgrades." The new camera, a compass, HSDPA 7.2Mbps, and a faster processor. None of which are as compelling at the EDGE to 3G upgrade.
What is "right now" intriguing to me is the supposed faster processor. The 3G is already pokey and I have a feeling the 3.0 OS will only make it worse. |

| reply to Matt I actually didn't think the iphone 3G was much of an upgrade over the Edge version. Most of the pages I look at are limited by the browser's rendering speed. When I need to do downloads/updates I can always do them when I'm wifi connected. I'm VERY VERY interested in the 3GS's faster performance.
I didn't originally care about the camera, but looking back at my usage of the iPhone, a better camera will be a welcome addition.

Something else with the hardware allows that. I agree with you here. Google's application is 100% voice controlled and works VERY well. There is no reason the regular iPhone can't do that. |
