Re: Any splicers installers here????

I've been in fiberoptics since the mid 1980's and have done my share of splicing. Why are you asking?

Ive been splicing for 10 years. Are there any telcos/contractors in your area? Are you near an IBEW hall?

What sort of work are you looking to get into? Inside plant? Outside Plant?

I've been involved in fibre placement and splicing in one way or another for about 10 years...

In TO, I've worked with CCS, Litewave, QX, and Sentrex... I don't know if any are hiring right now, but they are all still in business, at least.

A friend of mine his dad is part of the IBEW and he told me that they don't deal with fiber, on the odd occasion they might run the cable but that's it.

Yeah what's with fiber companies that disappear? I was reading the same thing on a fiber forum that a lot of companies just fold or get buy out. CCS and Litewave are still running I will check for the other ones and inquire at IBEW.

What's the hourly rate range for a splicer installer? I've heard crazy things from $15 to $35/ hour.

Some electrcians deal with fibre, mostly larger shops, and mostly as part of "other" work...

Really depends on the shop, for the rate... When I started, splicing fibre was almost an art, and the money was better. Now that the machines are so automated, it's almost (and I hate to say this) dropped to a semi-skilled job, and pulled the rate down with it. I would expect to start in the high teens (18-19 bucks an hour) and work up from there, probably topping out at the 28-32/hr range... But again, different shops are going to range widely.

Other skills and certifications, like confined space entry, fall arrest, etc, are going to help.

Good luck!

I have my fall arrest certification what's the confined space entry?

What about someone with own tools and truck? (not that I'm ready for that) but I'd like to know if there's enough work to keep busy!!!

Re: Any splicers installers here????

To setup a truck and your own gear, you're looking between 50-100 grand... Big step.

Confined space entry is required to work in manholes, cable vaults, and other, well, confined spaces... Involves gas testing procedures, little bit of harness work, etc...

...my Lexus cost 60 grand -- and I'll never make a dime from it! (just for comparison). If I knew I could "buy" a job that paid ~50 grand/yr -- for 100 grand -- I'd do it in a heartbeat!

I remembered that now from my course. I think companies offer that course or is it a course that anybody can take?

Just an update!!! Still looking for something. Seems pretty hard to find. I got a job interview last week but it was for piece work for phone/cable install repair (Rogers). I really didn't think they were getting paid like that, no salary, from 0.80 cents to $60 per job. They told me at the interview that more then likely the first year would be pretty low as far as money goes, below 40k which is not much when you live in downtown Toronto.
