finally found my latency issue

this took forever, but i FINALLY got a service tech to come out. i asked him and he is the only tech for two towns, LOL

my town i assume consists of one node for everyone, around 600 users, and we are connected with 8 T1 lines.

so that's about 12 megs of bandwidth for 600 people, give or take. i said WOW, that's not that great. and it does indeed explain my latency and droped packet rates.

he said the headend bandwidth charts show about 16megs downstream while they have 12megs MAX available, lol. something has to get bumped and resent. he also said that corporate was toying with the idea of adding another 4 T1 lines, bumping max to 18megs, but to me, this seems like a patch.

more talking to him and it turns out that the T1 lines are rent and run directly to the CO here in town for centurytel. now i can't seem to verify if CT has a fiber line laid to it's regional hub, but if they are able to carry the cable company, PLUS their 10 meg service here in town, makes me think i should switch to DSL just to get rid of my bandwidth/latency issues.

another bit of interesting info is that ATT aparently is the actual owner of the lines in and out of town, just completely leased to CT and CMA as it's their trucks that do the wire runs and their people that come out and manage the connection from the cable head end to the T1 lines, lol. good sign though since i've seen dozen of ATT wire trucks burying loads of new line south of me (regional hub area) coming up the road slowly.

but, the fact that i've confirmed oversold bandwidth is disapointing as i can do nothing to fix the latency except cross my fingers and try DSL. at the very least i'll cut out the middle man to get on CT main line, lol. and i know dearly that there is not a damn thing i can really do to get corporate to push the money out for additional lines in a small town that is not growing (new customers)

so thanks to all that have tried to help me out w/ my cable issues.

Re: finally found my latency issue

That's pretty crappy situation. If that's the only cable company I'd look into DSL/ADSL as that's a lot of users on very small bandwidth. They should have at least 100 mbps for that many people.
