ChairR #1 -What is Project Hope? (For our newer TD members)

When you first joined our team, there was an entire package welcoming you aboard and many things for you read. To feel like you instantly fit in.

One of the links, also has a read on something called Project Hope. You can see the link here: •Become a member of Project Hope and read up on some of our history and what course the project has taken on since it was introduced six years ago.

Six years is a very long time and with new members just joining you might not feel like you can make a difference or to be part of this wonderful project.

I wanted to take a moment and tell you this is not the case. There is no better time to join then now, and have your voice heard. To become a member, it takes being a member of Discovery and joining the forum, which you have hopefully done from your welcome post. To make a difference and have a direct contribution to the project you must become a donating member (and be able to vote certain elections). There has to be a donation of some sort.

This is not to say that your voice alone will not make a difference. We have always run the project as a Democracy where every member’s voice counts and before we make any decision that would have a major impact on the project we always let our voting members have the last say.

There are many other points that can be covered, but at this time I just want to open up the floor to any questions that you might have.

I will do my best, as Chairman, to answer anything that is on your mind concerning this wonderful project and I’m sure there will be questions I will not know, hence our other members will step in and help out.

Thanks, Slava for reporting on our special Project Hope

This is wonderful as it will give folks a better "feel" of what we do, why we do it - and how much it matters to us

I'm adding a few helpful FAQ links for our newer members, so that aside from their welcome thread - it's here as well

(we'll sticky this for a bit too, if that's ok, Slava?)

Sounds like a plan Lisa!

I also wanted to take this opportunity to ask a question.
How much does it cost roughly, per month/ per year to host a blade? (Electrical costs)

Thanks, Slava

Depends on your rate, but I figured a new quad uses about .12 kwh.

.12 kwh is prolly your rate; right?
My rate is .1152 kwh includes tax

Watts = amps x volts
mojo8 @ 1.60 amps full power=
1.6a x 120v = 192watts (bout' like 2-100watt light bulbs)
.012 x 1.92 = $.023 / hour
$.552 /day
$16.56 / month

mojo32 @ 1.75 amps full power=
1.75 x 120v = 210watts
.012 x 2.1 = $.025 / hour
$.604 /day
$18.14 /month

Sound about right?
EDIT: U can check my math here...
EDIT 2: I tried to look back, but couldn't tell for sure. I assume mojo 8 was a single core and mojo 32 was one of the first quad cores. Was that to illustrate that it only costs $1.58 per month more to run the quad....JoJo is soooo Kool

Here is another reference Slava...
I put the meter to my Q9650 running at 4.0 ghz. It draws 2.44to2.5 amps for around 300 watts. This might also approximate your stock i7-130W processor (excluding monitor).

Using the same calculations as above, mine costs about $26 per month to run.

Math! Yay!

Electric rate: prolly 12¢ per kwh
Monthly cost: $16.65 to $18.14 (YMMV)
Having a clown for a math teacher: Priceless.

Ray, thank you for this very thorough break down.
It will give us a good idea for now and for the future what to expect as far as monetary expense per month in being a host.

I know from past experience hosts wanting to take on extra blades not realizing of all the extra costs associated with running a pc 24/7. This will give us a really good idea that for about roughly $20- $25 a month one can have the pc on 24/7. This of course is our goal here for the project to keep a constant approach to looking for cures.

I live in NY. My rate is almost double that.

And yes, 8 was a single core and 32 is a quad.

Oddly, my figures from that link for mojo 32 (1.75 amps full power - .12 kwh) do not make sense, do they? .12 kwh does not convert to 1.75 amps, right?

I guess I need to redo that kill-o-watt!

eeeeeeeeeeu.......The importance is that quads are still a tremendous bargain. Consider Mojo8 at $16.56/month x4 machines= $66.24 compared to Mojo32 at $18.14/month. A comparative doubling of both costs for NY rates puts you even further ahead. ( $132.48 minus $36.28= $96.20 savings)

Bonus#1: Some quads cost very little more. This saves most of the expense of an additional 3 systems.
Bonus#2: The newer architecture of Quads is so far advanced that the output "might" represent 5x greater instead of 4x. (depends on actual clock/architecture).

Actually Brian, Your numbers are GREAT !! Makes perfect sense for mojo8@1.6amp and mojo32@1.75amp. Remember that the Q9650 posted at 4.0ghz pulling 2.5amp is a very advanced watt-hog system.

That .12 kwh you read is merely a function number. Press the button again to see the elapsed clock time. Note that as the elapsed time increases, that .12 kwh number will also increase; although it is only semi-accurate and mis-leading (IMHO).

That little kill-a watt is a great tinker toy until you get to the last button which is not "practically accurate". Better to use a formula at that point. Explaining that here is above clown pay-grade (Clowns don't earn very much). Better to read-up on the meter function

In summary: Your numbers are FANTASTIC , and provide great input

I was dividing that number by the total time to come up with .12.

Good news. It's now using only 1.64 amps. A year after the first check and I guess it's lost a step in its old age. Anyway, after 90 minutes it shows .19 killowatts which would be .126 kwh (which you're saying isn't accurate)

He,he,he....I can't let you trick me into a discussion about those function buttons, because "I might say something wrong". Perhaps someone else can provide that information? In fact, I never should have mentioned anything about functions "OR" accuracy and I withdraw those statements Here is one of several links discussing the operation. You should draw your own conclusions
»the-gadgeteer.com/2003/12/23/kil···_review/

Let me start over and say, "This is what I trust and have used all my adult life"
Watts = amps x volts
From this you can algebraically derive any unknown, when you have 2 knowns. I usually "rough" the voltage at 120v, but any volt-ohm meter should tell you precisely.

You may use this math formula, or you can use the calculator from the link I provided earlier...
Please note that this link also provides the "same" ages-old time-proven formulas at the bottom of the page.

Now this is how I "personally" use/trust the meter.

Button 1 (volts): I trust this (merely a volt-meter)

Button 2 (amps): I trust this (merely an amp meter)

....That simple, that's ALL you need. Use the formula or the linked calculator. Then apply your desired time frame and/or cost.

Button 3 (watts): Function key. I don't use button but NOTE! If you press this a second time it will supply you with the exact same number from the formula or calculator. You can use to verify your work.

I can't discuss the other (function) buttons for fear of saying something wrong.

Good luck my friend, I hope it helps

Getting back on topic, now that we have exhausted this last question.

What question can we answer for you about this project?

Is there anything that is not in the Frequently Asked Questions that you might be wondering about?

Come on Guys/ Gals, there must be something you want to know about Project Hope?

Or at least I 'hope' you would. (Sorry for the pun)

Here's some more info that doesn't involve any painful reading.

If you want to see how our blades are running you can see them in real time here - »team-discovery.net/tdph/
Or daily updates here - »www.tdprojecthope.com/index.php?···rt&id=13

Yes, we have 14 blades.

Here is what our older blades look like from here

And one of our newest blades from here

So, now, ask Slava a question!
