Re: PS3 - FF VII available for download

$10 for a re-release of a game that's HOW old? Yowch. Talk about gouging people.

I know many of you are fine with paying it, but really, it's mad to me to do so. If you OWN the game already, there should be some way for you to "validate" you have a copy and get the download for free. For those not owning it, I think $5 is more than enough for a game that was Sony's greatest cash cow at one point.

It's no different from the Wii downloads of old NES games - they want $10 for some of them too, which is just as asinine.

Of course, YMMV.

Problem is a "hard copy" of the game is now selling for $60-$100 each online...more than its new price. The game has a huge fanboy/collector following and Sony knows that.

So your options are buy an original for a heck of a lot more or download this one for $10 which I think is more than fair.

So people who bought an album in the 1960's should have gotten the cassette for free in the 1970's? And then gotten the CD for free in the 1980's?

People who bought a movie on VHS should have gotten the DVD for free? And then they should get the blu-ray for free?

$10 for the game is really not bad. If you don't mind older graphics, the gameplay is awesome. It gives more hours of enjoyment than many NEW games which cost $40-60. $10 is a cheap price to pay for 50+ hours of enjoyment.

Heck, go into any store to buy a disc of PS2 or PS1 games and none of the good ones are usually cheaper than $10. It's still not a bad price for a great game.

I don't own a PS3, but if you have the disk, can you not play it in the PS3?

Indeed you can . So really, you'd only pay $10 for the convenience of not having to put in your disc each time.

I must have bought at the right time. I bought an original disc set about 4 years back for 10 bucks off of ebay.

In which case you're not buying the same thing over again, you don't own the game - so buying it for $10 from the online store may seem like a good deal to you. That's fine. I'm talking for people that own the game already.

BF69 - I knew someone would make that comparison, but this is a totally different medium. A record to a tape/CD = new medium, costs to produce/distribute/etc. Whereas this is just a download. No extra medium on Sony's part, it's $10 pure profit. They would pay for bandwidth if you do or don't download the game.

That's why I said YMMV - if you're happy shelling out $10 for a download of a game you already own, then that's cool. Have at it. Me, no thanks.

Well, no. You actually covered both bases by saying it should be $5 for those that don't own it. So not entirely true.

Can you elaborate as to why someone who owns the game would want to download it besides being too lazy to put the game in the machine?

I guess I dont see the need to even download it if I already own it. I do own a copy and would just play the disk if needed.

Another question: On the download, has Sony purchased the rights from Square or are they shared? this obviously could shoot many holes in your validation theory as well if the publisher is different in each case.

It honestly doesn't matter to me either way but I find your logic silly.I own a HUGE collection of NES games. People play to download them on the Wii. Nintendo charges people for them. I sure wish I could validate all these NES games I have and get them for free downloads. Especially the huge cash cows like the mario games!

From a business standpoint it doesnt make sense and publishers would never even release these games if the public expected this.

You sir are in a minority using this mindset I believe.

The one reason I would buy this is simply so that I don't run the risk of wrecking yet another copy of Final Fantasy VII that I had purchased. Considering this is my third hard copy (that I had to buy at $50 back when it was still not yet in Greatest Hits because of the PS1 having wrecked the other copies I'd had), the idea of having a download version that wouldn't run the risk of being ruined by a weak/faulty disc drive definitely has its appeal to me. That, and it would mean relative safety when grinding for items/levels/stats/whatever.

So your worried your PS3 is gonna ruin your disks now?

Or just another chance to bash your poor luck with Sony products by referring back to something that happened many years ago?

No matter, I guess that is a viable reason for the couple of people in the world who may be concerned their PS3 is gonna eat their disk.

Damn, all this talk about this game is making me wanna play it again. But too many other ones out right now I need to get to.

Considering my first ps3 ruined a fresh copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 - proving what a brilliant lie all that hardcoating for bluRay discs is - such a thing became a very legitimate concern. Especially given the rather high cost of getting another physical copy nowadays.

Secondly, it means no more having to worry about long grinding sessions done for trying to harvest AP/items/etc.

You seem to have the worst luck of any gamer I have ever met or read about on gaming forums. Im sure its happened before but that is the first time ive heard of a ps3 eating a disk.

And what are you talking about in terms of grinding. I know what it means but how is this any different? The only thing I can think of is if you download saves or something but that doesnt make sense.

meaning for example configuring materia on a character to attack all and try to morph them all. If you do that late in the game with Vincent for example, you can rack up kills with the death penalty (since its attack power goes up by # of kills) and with the Morph effect, turn a bunch of the enemies there into various source items that can permanently boost your stats. Double benefit, then.

Or hunting down those rarer enemies that can teach you the various enemy skills so you can master (up to) all four of those materia. Since FF V, I'd been able to appreciate just how awesome it becomes when you can have a bunch of people able to cast those enemy skills/blue magics, and there was at least one FAQ on GameFAQs I'd wanted to try which had the strategy for being able to max out all four possible Enemy Skill Materia you could get in-game.

Right, my question is how is it different between the hard copy game and download one?

It seems that was a point you were trying to make unless I missed something...

Well, simply, with the hard copy of the game, if either of those three CD's gets scratched up to unplayability, the whole game is effectively lost, and must be replaced.

At least with the download, there's no having to worry about this. And even if the hard drive in the ps3 fails, it's not a huge deal to re-download since it's tied to your account.

ok, so your making the same point twice then?

If the disks are unplayable your saves will be fine and usable if you happen to buy another hard copy of the game. I understand this is not possible with the DL but you basically made the same point twice and it is a stretch that they would even get scratched up to the point of unplayability (yes I know it happens to you often--no need to reiterate)begin with.

Due to the value of the game it may be best to not use disks at all anyway, just to be safe. But I still don't expect to get it for free as its my choice if i get a DL version of the game even though I already have the hard copy. I think thats the whole point of this discussion at this point...?

I still like FF3 better.

wow wow wow. Are we talking about the American labeled FF3 (which is really the FF6 in Japan) or the "real' FF3?
