Re: [AZ] Cox Announces New Speed Tier--Premier Plus at up to 28M

I see a bunch of tests from brian2220 that are 17M, 22M, 25M, 27M, 30M. Not really sure I understand what the problem is.

The DLs that were 15M, 7M, and 2M with his new Premier Plus...

Those all appear to be from the same server. Anyone thought of the possibility that no one guarantees the accuracy, bandwidth, or utilization of these speed test sites? It is probably safe to assume those servers have peak usage times, poor performing OSs, and small connections to the Internet as well.

These were done within seconds of each other to two different servers on speedtest.net. 21M DIFFERENCE!!! I would say not all servers are created equal.

Hey dogblue,
That's pretty much the point of using the same server when making comparative tests because most of the good test servers are at least internally consistent. Only experience with the various test sites gives a clue is to which ones have any real validity; I posted to this same thread regarding this issue a week before you joined:»Re: [AZ] Cox Announces New Speed Tier--Premier Plus at up to 28M

You'll get no argument from me on that; I would say that Speedtest is worse than most, however. You'll get pretty decent comparisons using any one of the Java tests in our Tools section. I prefer linkLine's LA server myself:»/speedtest?loc=2&premium=

Wow, awesome. Been like this for almost every night for the past 2 months. What the fuck happened to Cox, and why can't FiOS make it's damn way to Chandler already?

it looks like cox has major problems in arizona, you might want to register and see if your getting any packet loss by some of the tools on here.

As an avid gamer, I'm very interested in as much upload as I can possibly get. I'm currently on the Premier plan and even though the Premier Plus plan only states a potential .5Mbps increase, sometimes that can mean all the difference in the (gaming) world.

My concern though, is that I own a condo (Pointe Tapatio) and with all the snowbirds here, the bandwidth tends to fluctuate with the seasons. So I'm concerned with paying for an increase that I might not even see. Because cable connections are typically shared for a complex, even though I pay for my own plan, am I just doomed to the broadband mercy of the amount of users here; no matter what tier I subscribe to?

Does your speed get slower in "snowbird" season? If not, I would not worry about it. I imagine most snowbirds being older are probably just generally surfing and checking email. Now before someone gets their undies in a bunch, please note I said "most snowbirds." I know there are exceptions to every rule and you could get a bandwidth hog in there.

Brian,
The pleasure was mine, especially seeing you get such good results in the end. Now that you know all the answers to the tough questions, I guess it's safe for me to order Premier Plus! I do have a couple of favors to ask of you in the meantime:
•Would you please get a big score on this test »/speedtest?loc=2&premium= and post it to the ISP? I'm tired of the best AZ post being a page and a half in.
•Tell me how to get this little item from a prior post—
Mac OS X 10_6 Snow Leopard
If you don't feel like broadcasting, you can always send me an Instant Message.
No matter what, I really have enjoyed. Good luck and Regards

I wish I found this thread yesterday. I took the afternoon off from work so I could be there for cox to "install" (i.e. hand me) the DOCSIS3 modem. They tell me that they absolutely require a professional installation.

I had the "premier" tier before, so I got 20Mbps/2Mbps whenever I tested on speedtest.net (including the speedboost bs obviously).

Up and running with the Cisco DPC3000 and ran a test.. 18Mbps/1Mbps

wait what?? You want me to pay $20 more a month for slower speeds? *sigh*

Anyway, the cable tech was helpful and said he would go reterminate every cable from the building to my cable modem. He even replaced the splitter in a utility box that we discovered in a closet in my bedroom next to the alarm panel. We disconnected every other cable in the house, now the "in" cable, freshly terminated, is directly coupled to the cable going to the modem. I don't have cable TV so I don't care about the other _nine_ cable jacks in the condo.

Tried again.. still the same speeds. He called in to verify that it was provisioned on premier plus. Still the same speeds. On their las vegas test site I was getting 6Mbps, and 12Mbps with my old Scientific Atlanta modem hooked up.

So what did he do? He took the DOCSIS3 modem and left, no resolution at all, just said "well that's too bad".

Luckily for me I took screenshots of the cable modem config and status pages as he was working on things. Yup, just one channel in each direction. I'll take some time to re-read through the thread, but does this mean I'm SOL or is this something Cox can fix? I guess I need to call and make yet another appointment and take more time off from work, they'll install it again, it'll be slower again, and then I'll call and deal with the techs myself (I'm a network and systems administrator.. it pained me to have to pay for a professional install).

As an update they're sending a different tech (I requested not the same guy who came yesterday since it was impossible to explain to him what was going wrong) Saturday evening. I had to cancel a Utah hiking trip for this now. blah

it better work this time. I'll make sure the tech doesn't leave with the new modem at least
