Wounldn't they be able to tell that remotely? I can understand if it was out of spec, but if it's like mine right now:

Downstream Value
Frequency 579000000 Hz
Signal to Noise Ratio 35 dB
QAM QAM256
Network Access Control Object ON
Power Level -1 dBmV

Upstream Value
Channel ID 2
Frequency 37800000 Hz
Ranging Service ID 226
Symbol Rate 2.560 Msym/s
Power Level 45 dBmV

Well to us yes, but to them no, So they want to come out hook up either your D3 modem or the one they will be supplying, and checking to make sure each channel is withen the range they like. Probably like %95 of the time there isn't gunna be a problem, and after cox has did this enough to know its not gunna be a problem.. then they will let people setup there own stuff, and not charge you. But for probably the first year of D3 from them, everyones gunna have to pay that install fee.

Requires DOCSIS 3.0 modem. Although many are on the supported list, only the Motorola SB6120 at $99.99 can be purchased from Cox.
Just to clarify modem choice, I just finished talking to Cox Phoenix Metro Sales at 623 594 1000 and the gentleman I talked to confirmed that the modem Cox would provide for $99.99 was the Motorola SB6120, not that it matters...

I have the Cox Premier Plus service, the modem I got was the Cisco modem-- they actually don't sell the Motorola one, although they DO support it if you buy it from Best Buy, etc.

Although they are only promising 2-2.5 Mb/s upload, I'm blowing that out of the water with closer to 5 Mb/s on AVERAGE. So YES, the upload speed is far greater than they promised, and kills anything DSL could offer. (I still loathe anything Qwest, since my days when they had a monopoly on "broadband" up in Utah. ugh).

The download speeds have been consistently in the 23 Mb/s download, with a peak of 33. I use speedtest.net to test my speeds--which is even what Cox uses for this product to test. The worst speed I saw on a test was 18 Mb.

Price is comparable to Qwest's highest, but with bundling, it only ends up being $20 more than premier or so?
overall, i'm pretty satisfied so far. plus, the modem has pretty blue lights, always a plus

I ordered a 6120 a few days ago and can't wait BUT I've heard of some heat probs and looked a little closer at the damn thing and it looks like a freaking waffle iron. Maybe I'd have been better off with the Cisco in the first place. Oh well, we can swap speed tests and other such prevarications. BTW you're the only poster who actually has the tier--congratulations!

If all you want to do is add the SB6120 to your account their will not be any additional fees. However if you want to get the Premier Plus tier then you will have to pay the install fees (You may also need to buy a DCP3000 as all of our information states that is the only modem that we will install for the DOCSIS 3 service tiers).

Now to a issue that we have discovered for those adding a SB6120 to their account. The default firmware out of the box has a issue that causes the modem to lock up every couple of hours. The latest firmware will fix that though. What I would recommend doing is once you have it hooked up go into the status pages at »192.168.100.1 and find the button to reset you modem. If you click on that link it should trigger the firmware download. The latest firmware that we have is SW_REV: SB6120-1.0.1.7-SCM00-NOSH if you reset it and don't see it show up within a hour or two PM either myself of CoxTECH1 with your MAC address and we can push it out to you.

why are the motorola's on the approved list then when Cox will only install the DCP3000 for Docsis 3.0 tiers?

Well im about %95 sure if you already have a 6120 and they come to hookup your new speed tier they will let you use your modem.

Because the SB6120 are backwards compatible to 2.0, 1.1 and 1.0 which means that their is not rely a reason not to approve them for use on the network.

Please note that I did not say that you would have to just that you may have to. Right now as far as we know the only modem that is approved for DOCSIS 3.0 is the DCP3000. It would be up to each market if they would allow you to use the SB6120 or not for 3.0 speeds. Please note that I am not saying that the SB6120's can't handle the 3.0 tier of service or may not be added at a later date. Just that right now all of our literature states that the only modem that we will use for DOCSIS 3.0 speeds are the DCP3000's. So my suggestion would be that if you are looking to upgrade to 3.0 speeds in the next few months and want to buy a SB6120 please call into your local system and make sure that the SB6120 is approved for DOCSIS 3.0 speeds. If you just ask if you can add one they are just going to say yes because they are on the approved list for our normal tiers of service. I would hate for you to buy one only to have the tech come out and tell you that you can't use it.

I just checked the Cox HSI speed offerings here- Premier (20 Mbps download w/Powerboost) is the highest that is shown. So, I assume the new tier hasn't gotten to this area, yet.

CoxToc1, well if they dont approve it withen a year for D3, im sorry to say but they will have a bunch of mad customers. But i see no reasoning behind them not approving it for use, seeing that it is Motorola modem, and can handle any speeds cox wants to throw at it.

But anyways I got my 6120 because it was at a good price, and i wanted to upgrade for on down the road when D3 is enabled, and Comcast lets it customers use the 6120 for there D3, so i see no real reason why it wont be approved for D3 withen 6 months.

Cool. Will those of us that already pay for the top tier get a free trial?

I ask, because, a couple months back, I got a call from Cox offering a trial upgrade to premium from the mid-tier. When I asked the rep if, because I already had premium, that meant I could get a trial of the mid-tier pricing, she hung up on me. =)

I spoke to a Cox Tech manager and the SB6120 3.0 speeds are supported here in AZ, it was in thier powerpoint info from manager meeting about the new Plus service. So I just have to wait the 3 days for network guys to check the node and such and should be on the Premier Plus package. I post my impressions once I'm up and running.

-Big thanks to Matt for your help if you read this!

My SB6120 is not on the Plus package yet, but getting this on the old Premier package (on the 6120)... So should get some good speeds once its on the Plus:

Well Cox may give people crap about the 6120 in certain areas with D3(which is very limited atm). But most of the time unless there is a real problem, i dont see them not allowing you to use the 6120, with them having to send a tech out for a D3 install anyways, so they can be right there to see the 6120 is working just fine on D3.

I mean hell Cox has a hard enough time trying to get people to upgrade from older modems, So if a customer already has a D3 modem, I cant really see cox people giving them any shit over it. Hell it is a $100 modem from most places.

* 64KB window size of TCP header is really too old, it is obsolete and it should be discontinue of use for long distance of internet wide area network unless if you need full of 64KB window size for LAN use only that can ramps you up to 500Mbits in a illusion but in physical LAN of 100 Mbits will do a good.

* 65MB window size of TCP header is very newer and it is needed for the future of WAN internet link of next generation with no latency guarantee, That 65MB of window size can do over 500Gbits in illusion and that 1Gbits physical link with 65MB window size will work very well that will ramps you up throughout very faster and less times.

*full of window size at 1 ms latency in illusion*

Please remember I can only tell you what is going on right now based on the information that has been given to us. And unfortunately sometimes I am the last to know about something. Like I have been saying right now all the documentation that has been given to us is that the DCP3000 is the only modem authorized for the DOCSIS 3.0 tiers of service. That could change in the future (and more than likely will) but when that will happen I do not know. All I am advising is that you be careful in your purchases and contact your local system and see if they will let you use it for the DOCSIS 3.0 tiers. I would rely hate to see a bunch of upset customers who bought a SB6120 only to be told later that they can't use it.

CoxToc1, Well it doesnt matter for us anyways since D3 aint in are area yet, and probably wont be for 6 months to a year from now anyways. So when that time comes here, Im pretty sure that 6120 modem will have been tested plenty by Cox, Hell i know they have tested it already, maybe they are shying away from it because of the early problems it was having, but the new firmware fixed that issue, and just goes to show there is nothing wrong with the modem itself, just a bad firmware release on it early models.

Btw I have done bought mine, and hell when the time comes for D3 here, if I cant use my 6120 modem, then cox better be willing to offer there D3 modem for a good price, Because hell there the ones to put the 6120 on the support list knowing it was one of the only D3 modems on that list and had no kind of info regarding it couldnt be used for D3, being it was a D3 modem.

Yes, I understand being in the VA office this info may not apply, but since the title of this post is "[AZ] Cox Announces New Speed Tier--Premier Plus at up to 28M" I am just speaking for what they told me here locally in the AZ office, anywhere else I have no clue, and as you have stated you should call your local # and ask them first.
