[Misc] Selling my Nikon D50 and getting an FZ28K?

I have pretty much decided on what P&S superzoom I want. I am going to get the FZ28K - the Nikon is simply too much camera for what I want to do. I love the way the Nikon feels, it's very balanced, but it's just too big to lug around everywhere.

I guess what I am asking is for opinions on the IQ of the FZ28K, carrying ability, DoF/Bokeh of that huge lens, etc. I've seen sample shots but none of them were of anything very interesting, maybe you have some you could show me?

It's either that, or is there another super zoom that is close to the IQ of a DSLR for $300.00 or so dollars?

My in-laws have the previous mode, the FZ-18. I have used it, and think the IQ is quite good. I can't remember how big the D50 was, but the Panny I believe checks in at just a bit smaller than the D40. There is very little weight to it IMO. As far as DSLR like cameras go, it's of typical size. DOF/bokeh will be different than what you are used to because of the smaller sensor. F/8 is more like f/16-22 in that regard, so f/2.8 will be at least like the f/5.6 you are now used to.

If you are looking at nothing but IQ, the LX3 is about as close as you can get to a DSLR, with the exception of the Sigma DP2.

I have the FZ8 and find it every bit as good as a dSLR for most things and prints well upto an 11x14". There is no super zoom that can even begin to compare to the FZ series Panasonics. I shoot everything from landscapes to macros with ours. They really excel in macro work!

I have an FZ8 that has less than 1000 pic's taken with it that I will trade you. It is still like new. But I have since bought an XTi and don't use the FZ8 much.

Re: [Misc] Selling my Nikon D50 and getting an FZ28K?

I just bought the Z28. I am more pleased with it than I can say. I also have it rigged up with aux lenses from my prior camera(s) which take it to over 6000mm (35mm Equivalent) and it remains hand holdable at 1488mm (Full telephoto zoom with a Tokina 3X aux telephoto lens..) My whole kit weighs about 12 LBs - which I wear in a photographer's vest. I'm sure that a Nikon or Canon DSLR may get better results - but I shoot a lot of wildlife, and a real 750mm lens on a DSLR is just too much to carry - and also hard to point at the target. The Z28 gets very crisp results - especially, it seems, after you set a custom white balance with a white card. (Some of the aux lenses alter the color unless you do so...)

Thank you for your reply, it's looking like this isn't too bad of a decision. I understand that the depth of field won't be as great on this camera, but the lower carrying weight can more than make up for that. (Not to mention, Alienware Bokeh. )

whoa... actually the DOF will be BETTER then a dSLR not worse!! Well, depends on if you like more or less DOF. I typically prefer more for most things I do, so it is better. But when doing things where I want less it can get a bit frustrating, but is still usable.

Alienware bokeh!!?? It has got darn nice Bokeh IMHO:

It seems that the places I was going to buy this camera from have stated it is discontinued. Panasonic still has it listed on their website ... is there something I am missing? (I checked B&H, Newegg, and Amazon has a much higher price than before.)

I wonder if Panasonic is going to be releasing a new version of this camera and I should possibly wait for a bit to buy? I just don't want to drop $300.00 on this cam now and they release one tomorrow. I am sure I will be happy with this camera, but nobody wants to buy something that is discontinued.

I don't think I would have an issue with panasonic on the wtty though, do you? I may just quit mucking around and just hit the buy now button ... unless any of you can find a better deal on it?

I'm also in the same boat on the prices. I've been reading up for the past two weeks on the fz28. When I first started looking Amazon themselves had it for super cheap. Now they don't even have it. You have to get it from one of the other companys. J and R music has a good price on it but then they stick it to ya for accessories. Thats the only down side to amazon, if you don't pay attention all your stuff could be shipped from several different places instead of everything coming directly from amazon.

Yeah, I just ordered a bunch of stuff from amazon (e-smokes) and I've been getting pieces and parts. Kinda annoying, lol. Just got the juice and cartridges today, the rest won't be here till who knows.

I would rather buy this thing locally so I can have a hands on with it, but nowhere has it around here. I have also been eyeballing older super zooms from Fuji. I have had the S5000, S5100, S5200, and S7000 - I have loved all of them. I just haven't seen many favorable reviews of their newer stuff - seems Panasonic and the others gave them a run for their money lately.

I decided on a canon. I found a Canon Powershot SX10 IS on Craigslist for $300.00 with all of the accessories. I figured I would give canon a go this time since I have always been a Nikon/Fuji guy. Seems like this camera has it all except for HD video ... it's a camera so I don't really expect it to do that, and VGA should be good enough for the random youtube video.

I just hope this camera is all that it is cracked up to be, apparently in super macro mode you can focus it at 0mm - we will see how much the lens gets in the way. lol.

20x zoom also ... should be good with IS - anyone know how good the IQ is on this? I have read varying reviews about different image quality, most people seem to complain about it in auto mode (it's probably doing low-light ISO 800 images ... I just can't see many P&S cameras doing well here.) At ISO 80 the images look very sharp, with slight barrel distortion from the images I have seen when you crank the lens all the way out to 560mm.

Any one?

Thanks,
Rob
