You're Lucky

Most of the time I doubt that I got 1 down let alone 6. Toward the end I timed out frequently every day. Instead of correcting it, CenturyTel chose to tell me it was my equipment. It is the de-facto answer after "reboot your computer". I live in the same location and use the same computer except now I have a new provider and I average 5 down and 480 up.

Routing has a lot to do with speed tests. I've learned where several of the Midwest bottlenecks are located. I always get 5 down at Chicago and half that or less at St. Louis, KC and Ft. Worth. It's been that way for years - even though I have lived midway between the three areas for 15 years. If you live in or near a metro area of some size like LA you will see better service. If your metro area is less than 500,000 you will see some improvement but not like what you experience when you live in Chicago.

I had Cox for too long in rural area before I dropped it. I went to San Diego to visit my daughter and repair her computer. She had Cox. It was 1000% better than anything I had with Cox. It you want superior service find a little ISP that cares about customers. This applies to anyone who lives in any rural area in the continental US.
