That's the old split tunnel issue, ie. her losing IM while in the VPN connection. See this article for help enabling that in the MSFT PPTP VPN client. Note the security issues.

You could, if you wish, allow her internet access through your XP PPTP VPN server while she is connected. See this article for help enabling TCP/IP forwarding.

Lastly you probably will not see her PC in your network neighborhood. NetBIOS sometimes does not play well with VPN. She could use a hosts or lmhosts file to map computer names on your home network with their LAN IP addresses. Here is an example lmhosts file that I used at one time...

She needs to address shares using this form...
\\Computername\ShareName (example: \\Norman\ShareName)
...or...
\\IP.address\ShareName (example: \\192.168.1.12\ShareName)
Lastly she may have issues if your local sub net is the same as the sub net she is on, ie. both in the 192.168.1.X range for example. The solution to that is for either one of you to change their sub net. Our colleague mudtoe has some good advice about using a 172 sub net at home to preclude this issue...

| first Sooneral THANK YOU! ok I have a little familiarity with altering the lmhosts file... I suppose my other idiot question is do I have to have a "dedicated server" running for her to access the printers here... or does she just logon THEN install the printers and they are recognized..?
Thanks |

| She can add a printer and use its UNC and printer name...
\\ComputerName\PrinterName
Example: \\Norman\HP7960
Provided of course that the printer is shared on Norman in the example. -- "When all else fails, read the instructions..." MS-MVP Windows Desktop User Experience |
