Is anyone having luck this weekend with gateway6 and sabnzbd+? I seem to be logging in okay to gateway6 but I can't connect to any of xsnews, eweka or newszilla. I was able to connect and download okay Thursday night but I haven't been able to connect Friday, Saturday or today. I am wondering if it is just me because I see noone else complaining. Thanks.
I cannot comment about Gateway6 or your setup but all of the news servers are up, functioning and reachable.

If you're on windows you may want to reboot your gateway6

if you're on ubuntu open up a terminal and do:

sudo /etc/init.d/tspc restart

I only download on Ubuntu or OS X, but if everyone else is up then you need to reboot the tunneling app/tunnel.

In a windows machine, that can be easily done via the Services control panel applet.

Shortcut to it - Start -- Run -- 'services.msc', then look for Hexago Gateway6 client, click on it and select 'restart' from the menu at the left side.

I have tried most everything after Gateway6 is shutdown and/or the Windows computer reboots. Never once has Gateway6 worked again short of removing & reinstalling. At first I thought it might be a firewall issue, but that was not the cause.

Everyone seems to be quietly enjoying their Usenet feeds (either paid for or the free IPv6 server ones, which have been running flawlessly).

One thing we should point out to other dsl users is how Usenet can be helpful in the event that UBB is indeed imposed on us all.

Compared to torrents, Usenet downloads can save you a lot of bandwidth. With UBB restricting people to 2 GB a day total (or 60 GB a month for everyone in the house), every Byte is going to count, so to speak.

Torrents - you download a Linux distro. If the file size is 700 MB, you need at least : 700 MB for downloading it, plus 700 MB seeding back as a decent human being and to keep it alive for others. (1:1 seeding ratio is the minimum decent option)

So, the total comes to 2x file size, or 1.4 GB via torrent.

Via Usenet post, you get the file encoded, a bit larger than 700 MB; there are ACK packets to let the server know you got each piece ok. Sometimes you might need a few par blocks to fix errors or missing pieces.

Assuming about 10% for acks and error correction, your total would be about 770 MB.

No seeding is needed for Usenet users, which is the real Byte saver in this case!

Add these saved Bytes over a month and it can be a major difference.

Good stuff, I would have to agree as well.

Also Usenet providers, paid or otherwise, often provide SSL which means nobody has to know which linux distros you're downloading from Usenet

Yes, that is a great plus as well!

Besides he traffic being encrypted, you are not out in the open, like when running a torrent, where anyone can see your IP.

SSL - just tried and I don't think I can get an SSL connection to XSnews.nl, bummer.

Got to love those linux distros, eh, I am a huge fan of British linux distros - most programs packages put out by the British Linux Corporation are excellent.

BLC channel 4 is my fave.

It was down for a couple of days, I switched to Eweka instead.

Easy way to see if the server is down is the IPv6 traffic graph at their site : »www.xsnews.com/ipv6/traffic.php

It's been back online since last night.

xsnews works great and fast for me when it is up but I haven't been able to get eweka working or newszilla. I am using sabnzbd+ and I can ping okay but when I connect it seems okay but it only downloads for about 2 minutes and then stops downloading but it still says connected. I have it set for 4 connections to eweka. It then takes forever to reset the server. Once reset it downloads for another 2 minutes and stops again but continues to say connected. Anyone else having these problems with eweka. xsnews works fine but it has been down a lot lately.

There was no password when I was using it but humor me and enter "green" for the userid and "green" for the password.

I will give it a try tonight when I am home...I currently have no passwords. I would think that it wouldn't let me on at all if that was the problem but I have been surprised before.

I really like the idea of free binairies to leech off of, but there's a reason why in the end I chose a pay usenet server.

Cause there's someone I can yell at if something goes wrong.

So I humoured you and me and I tried "green" and "green" and it didn't work. I then went back to no password and it seemed to keep downloading for a little longer than the usual 2 minutes but then eventually stopped. xsnews was up for a little while which was working well again. I just like to fiddle with the freebies but it does get frustrating some times.

You may want to send an IM to l0thar and see if its up. They may have gone "pay" as it was quite reliable, and they could charge something for it.

Sorry to hear it.

You and I both feel pretty much the same about it. I have astraweb at 11.00 per month. Great service.

When it was on it I used Newszilla almost exclusively.

I never got xnews working but I did have intermittent success with Eweka...
