Re: TSI Usenet vs. Paid Usenet

Sounds awsome, I don't know anything about IPv6 though and I thought it was coming to TSI, but not here yet.

I've heard about it, OS X has been supporting it since 03, but I haven't done my research.

Can I do IPv6 at home or does TSI explicitly have to support it?

I leeched off of freebin for years mostly french music but freebin went down when comcast lost their newsgroups. I'm on a shoestring budget and could never afford a real pay news server.

Everybody catches up eventually of course.

2 years ago it was impressive to hear of 60 days retention I suppose. Giganews currently has damn near a full years retention.

But one has to wonder, how old file can you need?

In recent time (this year), my actual need (where volume is concerned) has dramatically shifted. And to be honest, if I can't find anything to want, then the price of Giganews does tend to be a factor.

But I have not tried Astraweb, and thus can't compare really.
And as they say, if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

But it isn't 2005 any more, and my own personal needs have evolved.

Well... I use TSI usenet with those two free ipv6 usenet provider

# newszilla6.xs4all.nl:119 no l/p 3threads

# news.ipv6.eweka.nl:119 no lp 4 threads

I full my 5mbps connection perfectly, eweka is uptp 20mbps on 4 threads.

If someone have others free Binaries NNTP servers, feel free to share

Edit »www.tunnelbroker.net toronto server is nice
could you explain this a bit more...like what software are you using to get these speeds? can you just put those ipv6 server names into a program like SABnzbd?

Yeah, he got my attention with the FREE binaries service too.

Started reading a bit, you will need IP V.6 installed and working properly to get started. Might be a fun project for a lazy weekend?

The site someone linked to allows you to tunnel from the normal Internet (IP v.4) thru a tunnel (Hurricane Electric) and reach those sites.

Would like some pointers and tips myself too!

Edit : TSI Usenet is up to 125 days retention, so it's not bad at all for the low cost of $4 (plus get MLPPP bundled).

Have used Astraweb myself, and can confirm they are top notch, no problems service.

UsenetServer.com (TSI's Usenet provider) wasn't on the same league when I tried the service for a couple months, but that was a while ago - hopefully they have improved.

The 1 Mb/s speed limit is reasonable, considering the low cost and the low limits for monthly bandwidth everywhere (yes, 200BG can go rather quickly at 120 KB/s usenet dls)

If you want to test usenet newsgroup, you can signup for 2 days free trial here

»member.xennews.com/signup.php

You can skip the Payment information: don't need to enter any payment info...

You can enter any fake information like name, address...

Only need to enter the correct email address, User ID, password...

If you keep your computer running, queue, you can download for 2 days... You can configure to use more connections in order to download at your max ISP speed (this server doesn't have good download speed compare to other premium paid news server)...

After 2 days trial, if you're cheap, you can change your IP by rebooting your modem, or disconnect/connect your internet...

Signup again using different email, User ID...

After a while, you might change your mind and pay for cheap good news server deal like Astraweb $11 USD/month...

TekSavvyMLPPP

reply to El Quintron
P.S. after signup you might have to wait for several hours because your new User ID will not recognize right way by the news server...

Thanks for the info on XenNews, I am trying out the service with the free account and it works well.

Trial account is limited to 2 days and a maximum of 10 GB download, still good to get some stuff and try it out.

Although it said maximum 10GB download, but if you keep queueing to download non-stop, no disconnect, you can continue download for 2 days at your max ISP download speed... So depend on your download speed, you might get way over 10GB..

Have used the XenNews trial account, thanks to the poster above for linking it. Worked excellent.

BUT - I came across an even BettER deal.

Reading the alt.binz forum, someone mentioned XLned, I went and found out and their offer is the best I have seen yet.

Full details of account types at »www.xlned.com/bestellen/ .

* 2.5 Mb/s Lite account, unlimited transfers, 220 days retention, is only an incredible 3 Euros per month (was CAD$4.60 at paypal exchange rates). Buy a 6 months block, and it's even less.

Being a new customer, I picked the 1 month to try them out, and the account was setup and running in minutes. the price is super, the best deal until now was AstraWeb for USD$11, this is way less money.

For my limited DSL speed, the 2.5Mb/s account will work just fine.

Goodbye mlppp, will not be needing it for Usenet.

Thanks a lot guys, like I said, I'm just looking for comparisons between the Usenet that's included with TSI and the Pay Usenet Providers, looking for differences in performance and retention mostly.

I use Astraweb with the $11 US unlimited a month and I absolutely love it. Torrents are good for some stuff, but usenet 99% of the time has everything I want.

Also, Astraweb is moving up to 365 days of retention.
»helpdesk.astraweb.com/index.php?···ewsid=20

So you get a kick ass price and one of the best retention rates out there. The only thing that would be nice would be if they allowed multiple IP address logins at once, meaning more than one IP address can log in. I think Giganews allows this and maybe a few others.

For Comparison purposes :

** TSI Usenet : 1.0 Mb/s speed; 125 days retention. Your cost : $4.00 per month, plus 13% taxes = $4.52 a month(for the Fixed IP package)

** XLned : 2.5 Mb/s for Lite package; 220 days retention. Your cost : 2.99 Euros per month (less for 6 month prepaid), no taxes added. Works out to about $4.50 or so, Canadian dollars.

** AstraWeb : higher speeds (maxed out my 3 Mb/s connection easily); longer retention. Special price is USD$11.00 per month, no taxes added.

Astraweb is excellent, had them before. But XLned's price is the best I have seen.

imo, XLNed is a better usenet deal than TSI's usenet. (bear in mind you would get mlppp as part of signing up for TSI's fixed IP package).

Thanks for the info, indeed I was in a continuous session and got more than the 10GB maximum mentioned in the registration page.

Service was good, all files completed. Nice trial.

Does XLned or AstraWeb (or any other usenet provider for that matter) have a web-based interface, with automatic yEnc decoding, par repair, and unrar, like Easynews?

Hypothetically speaking, being able to wget an 8G 1080p video and max out my (hypothetical) 1MB/s downstream is a killer feature.

That's one HUGE file, I would rather download it in smaller .rar pieces, and have par files to fix any errors (ie, use regular newsgroups process).

One single 8GB http dl? Pretty big, maybe you save some bandwidth if the decoding is done online, but...
