1 edit | [CATV] DCX3400 green screen issue. i just got the new DCX 3400 DVRs (3 of them) and im having an issue.
i have mine connected to my sony kdl32nl140 hdtv via a HDMI cable and all i see is a green screen with no picture. i hear the audio of the channel that its tuned into in the background, but for video all i get is a green screen.
i have noticed one thing though, when i unplug the HDMI cable and re-connect it to the STB i get picture for about 20 seconds then it goes back to the green screen.
* a couple of other notes: i have another tv (sony XBR6 52 inch) in my main living room with the DCX DVR and no issues with that tv, the issues are in my bedroom and my sons room (both tv's are the kdl32nl140). could there be a firmware issue? or an HDMI issue?
i also had the older DCH DVR's prior to getting the new DCX models, and i had no issues.

| Re: [CATV] DCX3400 green screen issue. hey benjamin, i actually got rid of 2 of the dcx's this morning; a cool tech came out and swapped them out with dch's. the dch's dont have that issue which baffled me and the tech. he placed a call to one of the big-wigs and left him a msg regarding the issue. as far as how i have the dvr's connected its with a straight hdmi to the TV itself.
now here's the kicker! i get home today from work (20 minutes ago) and its happening to my XBR6 sony. and before i left work i showed the tech that it was working. i guess im gonna have to get rid of the DCX's until there's more of them on the field and maybe a firmware gets pushed out.

| Goliath, Is the DCX connected directly to the tv or thru a receiver? Have you tried resetting the tv? Is the issue on all channels? If you getting picture for 20 seconds and then it goes to a green screen it sounds like either a setting that is incorrect or possibly an hdcp issue. | |

| The DVR is probably broken. I had a 6416 whose HDMI output exhibited the same symptoms after 2 years of use.
Test one of your working DVRs with the Sony TV to verify.

| Re: [CATV] DCX3400 green screen issue. I dont think it would be the video settings on the box that would cause it to show for a period of time and then not. Have you tried using the component cables to see if its doing the same thing? Also, the TV has the ability to turn the HDMI control off and on, have you tried setting that to off? Perhaps there is an issue with the tv trying to control the box over the hdmi cable that is causing the issue. | |

1 edit | Re: [CATV] DCX3400 green screen issue. i did try components and they do work. so my guess is that its either the HDMI cables themselves or an issue with the DVR and particular setups that i have..
one thing i must say is that the HDMI's that im using are all "Belkin Pure AV" cables. so im gonna run to walmart tomorrow and try some cheap brand cables to see if that works, if not then there's definitely something up with the sony/DCX combo.

1 edit | said by jmirabella :please specify the exact model and we will check with our vendors.. This is happening with our Samsung LN40b530.
Edit: I will try and locate some component cables and verify those are stable (which previous posts here and in AVSforums seem to confirm), then post results here.
Any idea when a firmware update will go out to LVH RCN customers? I did not realize just how "bleeding edge" we were when we got this DVR (4/30/09...apparently right when they became available). I would like to stop the bleeding now, thank you!

| I have noticed this problem with HDMI connection on my Sony 46XBR4. It was fine for the first day. The second day things were fine. I used my PS3 (connected to a different HDMI input) and the tv was fine afterwards. The following day, I saw only a green screen on my cable box. Switching to a component input has allowed me to watch tv. Hope this info. helps. | |

| I have reconnected the HDMI output to my Sony KDL-46XBR4 tv. I have component hooked up as a backup. My box is locked to 1080i for HD and 480i for SD. HDMI has been working fine for 2 days now. I'm not sure it had anything to do with having another device hooked up over HDMI, since those don't talk to each other. I deactivated the HDMI device control on my tv. Neither my PS3 and DCX box are controllable anyway. Maybe this is a clue. I will update this post if anything changes. So far so good. The only things different from before are the HDMI control off and component hooked up also. | |

| Re: [CATV] DCX3400 green screen issue. Firmware is version 22.28 and so far so good. No green screen for many days now.
I have noticed the image occasionally going black on HDMI and when I switch to the component output I see narrow interlaced versions of the screen. It looks strange enough that I snapped a pic in case seeing it might be helpful. This is a rare occurrence and can be remedied by changing channels and/or turning the box off and on again a couple times. It does not seem to effect recordings, only the output.

| I re-enabled the "Native" video output that will show 720p or 1080i to match the channel or program. Not sure if that was the issue, but I woke up to a green screen this morning on my DCX. Probably has nothing to do with the HDMI control function in my tv. My guess now is that something involving 720p output is involved. I'm perplexed. | |

| My mother recently upgraded her TV to a new Panasonic P50S1 plasma and I had her also pick up the new DCX3400, since mine has been working great. I have her box connected via HDMI and she is getting the 'Green Screen' just about every other day. Only a reboot of the DCX will fix it, for about a day or 2. I'm not sure where the issue lies at this point. TV, cable or box? -- »www.pregamelobby.com

| The green screen issue is a major bug with the new Motorola DCX set top boxes. Motorola re-wrote the display engine to accompany more features such as native resolution, SD image enhancements, 1080p VOD, MPEG4, and eventually 16:9 program guides will be possible.
Apparently in their haste this nasty bug has come out. There are palates of these boxes at Comcast in my area, and employees are testing the boxes. Right now our area will NOT be rolling out DCX boxes to customers until Motorola's next firmware update which is supposedly going to fix this issue. ETA is June sometime.
If your area is affected by this issue, your only resolution is to use Component video, or get ahold of DCH or DCT set tops. Motorola made this mistake in the past with firmware 16.20 on their DCT series two years ago.

I'm sure they'll get the issues worked out soon enough...I thought I read somewhere that Motorola was planning on releasing a new firmware in June that would correct these issues...I'm also glad that the NY market was not used as a guinea pig for these new boxes

| Re: [CATV] DCX3400 green screen issue. Both the HD and HD/DVR boxes I have are the DCH series. So far I don't see a reason to switch. But I know sooner or later I will want or need the bigger hard drive capabilities. Or just plain want a new toy.

| I am having the same green screen issue.
1) When you turn off power and hit menu, there are some settings on the box, do they affect this?
2) how do I find out what firmware version I have and what it should be?
3) Am I better off just returning this box to Comcast and getting something else?
thanks | |

| Here's a quick story about obtaining one of these boxes today for my grandfather. I escorted him up to Avenue C (Our local service center for the Lehigh Valley) and we set him up with a nice new HD DVR box after I talked him into it. We go there, get a box, obtain a $30 HDMI cable and head home. I hook the box up, and leaving the center the attractive lady told me that it'd take an hour to setup the box. We let the box go for two hours, no picture. So I did the trick to get to the box settings by turning off the box and pressing menu... the screen is going nuts, flashing green, then the lettering come up to change the settings, then flashes green. Long story short.... RCN is coming out to trouble shoot the issues. Man these boxes are junk, I'm reading horrid things about them on here, I'm sooooooo happy I keep my "old school" box. And by old school i mean a box with the frickin' time on the front of it!!!! | |

| Re: [CATV] DCX3400 green screen issue. I'm not sure you're going to get anything different now. It took a tech who luckily had a few in his truck to get one. Avenue C doesn't have them anymore to give out. So it'd cost a service charge to get one at your place. I'd just call support everyday and complain about a green screen issue and you want a DCH box, it's probably the only way to get a working box. | |

| RCN rolled out a new firmware to our DCX's last night, so everyone who had the green screen/hdmi/sony tv issues should be good. thanks to rcnman and motorola for putting that out! all we need (Lehigh valley) is more HD channels and i'll be pretty content, thanks again. | |

| DCX3400 for Boston, MA market... what to expect... I'm in Dedham, MA and caught wind of the DCX3400... what is it really? What can I expect?
1. Timeline of availability 2. Bigger drive from 3416 that I have ? I believe it's 250gb vs 160 on the 3416, right ?
3. Higher compression? MPEG4 vs MPEG2 for the 3416 ?
What else ? Multi-room ? External drive capable ?
I'm asking because my 3416 is acting up and I need to swap don't wanna consolidate my trip to the local office for this swap...
THANKS! | |

THANKS! 1 - Timeline, no clue as to when the DVRs will be here. Cable guy told me about 2 weeks - back in May. The DCX HD reciever is being distributed right now.
2 - The DCX boxes do have a bigger 250gb hard drive vs the 160gb hd on the DCH/DCT series.
3 - It does support MPEG 4, but at this time all cable companies still use MPEG 2 to deliver video. It also has a 1ghz tuner inside, which gives it access to more channels. Both the tuner and MP4 support are dependant on whether or not RCN decides to implement them in the future.
Multi-Room DVR, external HD capability, and Media support are all dependant on RCN and its software vendors enabling those features on the boxes.
