I have a 3G USB stick that might be useful if the my cable goes down. I really hope they didn't remove that feature for sharepoint! | |

If you are using 1.21 or lower, you should upgrade. Just disable SecureSpot, its useless for most people. | |

My impression is you probably want to upgrade to 1.22B05 but I'm not so sure you would want to upgrade to 1.31! I haven't seen any major improvements documented for it in the definitely appears to be some drawbacks. I think it needs more time to settle out before everyone starts jumping to it! | |

| Re: Dir-655 1.31 firmware available hmm Well it's definitely an improvement over the buggy (for many) 1.22b05 and not-much-better (for most) 1.30. But things are looking up for 1.31 vs. 1.21 (so far - I'll know in a few more days of use).

| Tested, A3 hardware.
802.11b networking is available, but haven't tested it.
Seems to work quite well actually, after upgrading the router my notebook's N speed jumped from 150mbps max to 300mbps max, varying from 90mbps all the way up to 300.
Haven't had any issues so far, web browsing seems to be a bit more responsive and quicker also. | |

Since I don't need 'B" any reason I should do this upgrade? | |

| Re: Dir-655 1.31 firmware available Upgraded from 1.22 beta.
I have noticed a significant improvement on the wireless side, on N mainly. 802.11g performance is roughly the same.
802.11b is also available anyway.
Is there any reason not to upgrade? I don't think so, works well for me. | |

Either that or just go back to wires, don't keep demanding that antique legacy standards be maintained! You can buy a Nintendo DS today that only supports 802.11b with WEP. The user cannot upgrade, it is Nintendo who keeps this around. The DS is still a popular product at a reasonable price that is sold alongside the New DSi. The new DSi that just came out this month does support faster wifi standards and better wireless security but the price is approx $40 higher. The DS will be in play for a few more years....
In my case, the DS connects to an unsecured Guest Network. I will not compromise my main network. | |

| Re: Dir-655 1.31 firmware available The difference in cost to change from b to g is so small it's not even worth considering. Since they already have developed the software for the DSi it would only be a hardware cost which I'm sure would be much less than $1.00. Is just that they're too stubborn and backward to make the change. I agree maybe the older units couldn't be upgraded (maybe they could) but at least any new DS's they make should meet the newer standard! | |

| I was running on 1.21 firmware earlier, all was working fine nearly, just a few glitches in 1.21.
Because of the small glitches I decided to try out 1.30 firmware, it works too. .. The only thing I have problem with now is the ports, my FTP server is not working after the upgrade, can't get port 21 to open anymore, strange!
Now I have upgraded to 1.31, same thing and a downgrade is impossible, bummer!
Anyone else notice any strange things with port openings?

| Routing option |
Hi! Does anyone that has upgraded for this new firmware version can tell me if they have changed "ROUTING" option, under ADVANCED menu to allow us to make routes to LAN instead WAN?
My router uses firmware 1.21 and I cannot make static route to my own LAN, only to WAN port. I will just upgrade if this option is available.
Thanks!

| I upgraded from 1.22 last night and so far so good. The router has been stable and is actually playing well with my Airport Extreme both running N networks. Under 1.22, I had to shut down the N network on the DIR 655 and only use b and g to get things stable on the Airport Extreme.
Now why the two routers? The Airport Extreme does an amazing job at handling external USB drives. Maybe Shareport will take a hint here. On the Airport Extreme, I run a USB hub and hang two drives off it. I can also run a printer simultaneously here is I choose. One that is for my backups via Time Machine and the other is a FAT32 drive that both XP and Mac can share. I run a small client from Apple on the XP machines and connect as a guest. The reconnection at start up is automatic and requires no intervention. Again - Shareport needs to get to this point to make it easy to use. | |

3 edits | Well, for insane reasons, got brave and updated an A3 and A2 router yesterday with 1.31, seems solid SO FAR. Smooth update, 1.21 saved settings files restored beautifully, no quirks in the process at all. I just hope the 1.30/1.22 tendency to just stop making connections is fixed! (my previous router uptime was 45 days with 1.21)
(They should have just made the Advanced DNS setting automatically set the OpenDNS servers for DNS. heh) | |

1 edit | Well I decided to risk the plunge from 1.22b05. b is indeed there. I find I still have the same issue with b and n though. When I turn on b,g and n my Palm TX doesn't even see the network and can not connect even knowing the SSID and WPA2. With B and G only on my Palm has no issues whatsoever.
I notice there is some behavior that is indeed different though.
When I logged in 1.22b05 with graphical off (wish that where the default) I had to click the login button pressing return did NOTHING. Also 1.22 would jump to the Status->Device Info page on login. Strange this seems inconsistant.
1.31NA with graphical off the return key on password logs me in (yeah) and I see the Setup->Internet page not the Status->Device Info page. (Like the org firmware 1.10 did)
I would like more information on the Advanced DNS switch no info on the help pages. It defaults to off, think I'll keep it off.
rev A3 1.31NA PPPoE B&G WPA2
Guest SSID on WPA
One laptop connecting via wireless G mode, One desktop G via a USB dongle in addition to my Palm T|X in wireless B mode and wired are 3 desktops 2 blueray's and two DirecTV DVRs (one HD one a hacked TiVo) | |

Seems to just set an alternative DNS service similar to OpenDNS but with no config ability like with an OpenDNS account. As to how reliable it is compared to OpenDNS is yet to be seen I suppose.
I assume you meant the info in the 1.31 help is not very informative, because the setting is described there (bottom of the WAN section). | |

4 edits | Re: DIR-655 1.31 Firmware available Nothing else at the bottom of my screen Mine has this in the Support / Setup - WAN help section:
---------- Advanced DNS:
When feature is enabled, your internet traffic will be protected by a security ready DNS server. This feature provides Anti-Phishing to protect your Internet connection from fraud and navigation improvements such as auto-correction of common URL typos.
Note:
When DNS Relay is enabled along with Advanced DNS feature, your workstations on the network that are obtaining an IP address from routers DHCP server will obtain 192.168.0.1 (routers IP address). However, traffic will still be protected.
Although Advanced DNS feature is enabled, DNS IP address of your workstation can still be modified to the DNS server IP you desire. Please note that the router does not dictate the DNS name resolution when DNS IP address is configured on the workstation.
If you selected this option and have VPN or Intranet setup in your network, you can disable Advanced DNS service if you experience connection difficulties. ---------- | |
