If that's the point, then what's the problem? The point is, people don't upload here sometimes. Because they're lazy. This would enable them to upload easier. -- dslr tools | »Orangeface has RETURNED (for firefox users)

| It's more than that -- it's a courtesy to normal non-lazy contributors since it saves them several minutes of hassle /annoyance every time they want to post; it also allows DSLR to automatically attribute the cached site (e.g., with a caption "cold linked via »referencedsite.example.com ) that provided the image. It's a clean, fast, hands-off way of doing it.

Makes perfect sense.
And the objections on copyright grounds are hilarious! Consider how many copyrighted images are used here by the site for forum headers and the hundreds of thousands of copyrighted images in avatars, and that none of them were granted permission to be used here. There is no site liability beyond compliance with a possible takedown notice. If the graphic was easily found and deleted (which this would expedite) it would actually ease some of the administrative burden.

1 edit | Well, I didn't count, but it seems like about 2/3 of the objections are because people mistakenly think it encourages hotlinking, rather than the opposite. Maybe another 1/3 cite copyright.
Edit: Fixed brain lapse.

| reply to B said by B :That's just silly in my opinion. By that argument they should just turn off the ability to upload any attachments, most HTML, YouTube embedding, etc. Not to mention that you're simply assuming that most or all of the images would have restraints against such redistribution. If your web site is not intended to be viewed then don't make it public -- do you take similar issue with Google and Wayback Machine caching? -- B I think embedding YouTube crap in threads should be BANNED. I don't have Flash Player on Fx and I go to a thread here with some stupid YouTube crap embedded and I get a notice at the top of Fx about needing to install a plugin for Flash Player. I have no intention of ever installing Flash Player on Fx. I think only links to YouTube should be allowed in the forums. I didn't join this site to watch movies on it.
Who spends a lot of time downloading images to upload to this site? I don't do that at all. The only images I upload here are Printscreen captures and some of my photos to my gallery page. I think this is a non issue. I don't see images in forums here other than screen captures. I do see more and more embedding flash movies which should be banned. Links only should be allowed. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. I have no intention of ever installing Flash Player on Fx. Just FYI, nobody goes out of their way to embed the Youtube videos -- people are just entering "links only". DSLR automatically embeds the video whenever anyone simply types a Youtube URL. (I noticed this to my own surprise when entering a URL once.) I assume Justin chose to do this as a courtesy.
If you don't want Firefox bugging you about installing Flash (or other plugins /extensions based on the presence of arbitrary page content and MIME types) I'm sure you can simply shut those reminders off somehow; that would be more effective. I certainly can't imagine that this is the only site you encounter with such content.
