File sharing issue over VPN

Hi all.

I have recently established a VPN, where windows XP clients connect to a Windows Server 2003 machine running RRAS. The clients connect using L2TP using a pre-shared IPSEC key.

There is no problem with the VPN connection itself. All clients (be it XP Pro or XP Home are able to connect to the VPN server.

The problem I am experiencing pertains to the way the vpn clients access a file share located on the server.

Originally, when a vpn client connected (using a/c vpn_user), they would automatically get full control for the file share. To confirm this, I did the following:

1. Confirm in RRAS that vpn_user successfully connected.
2. Go to >Computer Management >Shared Folders >Sessions. Under the user field, it would say that "Administrator" was connected to the share (\\VPN Server Name\Shared Folder).

However, a few days ago, this behavior changed. With the exception of 1 vpn client, all clients now connect to the share as "Guest", even though their accout has been given full access rights to the share.

It appers that the problem may have started when I enabled the Guest account on the server. However, when I disable it again, the clients cannot connect to the share at all. (For those of you scratching your head, there was a specific reason why I needed to enable the Guest account).

To narrow down the problem, I have been just using one account called vpn_user (not simultaneously) to connect to the server. This account has been given full control for the shared folder. I have then tried dialing in with this account from 3 different geographical locations.

Interstingly enough, one of the XP Pro clients from Location 1 connects to the share as "administrator". However, all other clients (including other XP Pro clients at Location 1) connect as "Guest".

I am really at my wits end on this one.

How can I get it back so that the vpn_user account always connects to \\Server\Shared_Folder as "Administrator".

Please help.

Re: File sharing issue over VPN

Try creating a "vpn group" and then giving the group share/security permissions for the directory...
