said by davoice :I'll be glad when they get on the stick with PS3 support. I've been waiting for a reason to switch from Blockbuster Online but Netflix's Blu-Ray upcharges made me rethink the switch. If they hurry up, I might actually have a reason to switch again. And it'll give me more ammunition in our fight against Time Warner bandwidth caps here in the Triad/Greensboro market! }Davoice Have you checked out PlayOn? It's a retail product, but it streams Netflix Instant to any DLNA device, including the PS3. |

I have a paid version of Playon working with my PS3 as well, but don't believe it will be a long term solution. They seem to be playing a bit of cat & mouse with the content sources, where a given supplier (Netflix, CBS, Hulu, etc.) will drop off or become unreliable for a week or two and then return. It's also a pretty fragile application. Anything other than pause or play seems to freeze it up pretty fast.
I like it and it works as an interim solution, but native support in the PS3 would be better. |

I thought it was still Flash and I just assumed they created some sort of Flash proxy that would proxy the content to the DLNA device.
I've used other apps (like TVersity and Orb) that want to transcode everything and it destroys quality. |

Same and same...thought the PS3 Media Server kicks ass They (Netflix) needs to get with Google if they're going to do it, as they've got it figured out....though isn't Silverlight a MS thing? Yeah.....that'll happen. |

Netflix used to use Flash until they switched to Silverlight, which is the "Windows codec with DRM" that you're referring to. |

The requirements for Netflix "Watch Instantly" was Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer. The new method allow Macs to access the "Watch Instantly" streaming video because of Silverlight, which is available on both OSes and multiple browsers. |

| reply to Matt Dang! You beat me to it. I've been using it for about a week now. Works great and logs in to Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, and Amazon video.
It works great with the PS3 and works pretty well with the DirecTV HR-21 boxes (the minor issues I've had I'm sure are related to the DTV box and the fact that that stuff is still "beta").
I even tested PlayOn with my Archos 5 over my wi-fi. Works like a charm! -- Tradition: Just because you've always done it that way doesn't mean it's not incredibly stupid. --despair.com |

Closely related to MPEG4 but still 100% proprietary MS crapola (can you tell I hate MS and Silverlight)... |

It's not open source, but MS doesn't charge a licensing fee for it. It's also superior to Flash (Flash in it's current form anyway) in every way imaginable minus ubiquity. Microsoft even worked with Novell to make sure it was developed for the Linux platform. (Moonlight)
Silverlight is absolutely a good direction for MS to take. |

The UPnP media server does work well, it's all the other features that don't. If you want to just use it as a UPnP media server, it will work well. |
