long file path doesn't resolve over PPTP

anyone got any tips for getting long file paths to resolve over VPN/PPTP? the user has success when manually clicking start, run, typing \\servername, then when that comes up, clicking the share, the folder, and so on. but it seems to timeout when the filepath is several folders deep.

we've made sure all her DNS is setup correctly, but it still seems slow.

nothing comes to mind but you could perhaps create another share at a deeper point in the file structure if it's causing problems, as a workaround??

What PPTP server and client are you using?

I just tried and had no problem navigating 6 levels deep. A bit slow over a UMTS connection, but still had no issues. But then I wasn't using DNS, just IP addresses in the UNC path.

I use the XP PPTP client to connect to my router at home.

we have the firewall for handling the connection, with the XP built-in client

I'll second what jmycknshk See Profile said, that creating a share for that folder would be a workaround you should consider.

If you believe it's a name resolution slow down, you could try putting an lmhosts file on that machine which will pre-cache the machine name resolution. If the IP isn't static, using this approach will cause issues if the ip does change. I personally use static on my clients for this, as this as well as other reasons, to aid in name resolution and browsing over vpn which is widely used in my setup.

Sometimes the old fashioned way works best.

Seeing a computer in the browse list does not imply you can connect to it. If it is on your local segment, you can connect through broadcast; if it is on a remote segment, you need an LMHOSTS entry for it.
VPN = remote segment.

Can you provide an example?

Typically, if there is a space in the name, you need to enclose it in quotes. Like so: "\\servername\share\long directory name"
