I have a router and use vista firewall control an add on program that makes the built in Vista firewall more functional. Works great for me, and uses very little resources.

Sygate Pro on Windows systems and IPTables on Linux systems to block specific things on individual systems such as break-in attempts on my web, ftp, or email servers.
My Linksys RV082 router to protect the entire network from such things as DoS attacks and known malignant IP ranges and domains.

Guarddog in Linux... My picks...
Technically, Guarddog is a KDE frontend: "Guarddog is built on top of Linux's ipchains and iptables packet filtering commands..."
I voted for it since it is GUI frontend (easier). I only block inbounds.
I use old KPF v2.1.5 in Windows XP Pro. SP3. Where are Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP)/NAV CE/any other enterprise products? 
On Mac, I just use the default firewall and LittleSnith for outbounds.
At home, I use one of these software firewalls and a router. |

KIS on my main box.
My other 2 boxes I'm trying out Comodo, which I've not played with prior, as I'm looking for something to supply to other homes, but plain ol' Windows firewall prior.

Just the Windows XP/Windows Vista firewall. It does it's job, plus I'm double NAT'd and have a router with an SPI firewall on it, so I'm pretty much covered. I used to use ZoneAlarm a while back, until they began bundling Anti-Virus software with the free version where I dropped it. |

On my XP computer I use a router and no software firewall because I have ProcessGuard. When I connect directly to the modem (as I am presently to figure out if the router is causing problems) I use the Windows firewall.
On my Vista Ultimate virtual machine, I use ZA Pro which I got for free for one year on their tenth anniversary. ProcessGuard will not work on Vista and the pickins for classic HIPS on Vista are slim so I jumped at getting ZA free for a year. I like it and it works fine with Avira Suite 9 beta (minus the firewall module).
I forgot to vote for it, but on a virtual machine running XP Pro SP2, I have been using Avira firewall from the beta 9 version. I like ZA better as it is easier to use and the GUI is nicer.

Until recently I used to use ZoneAlarm's Free version. Nowadays, competition has increased and many good products have started creeping in.
Recently (after much time studying firewall comparatives online) I switched over to Online-Armor (»www.tallemu.com/product_overview.html). Needless to say, not only is it light on resources but seems to be as effective, if not more, as ZoneAlarm. Comparing it with Comodo (installed on another PC), Online-Armor definitely seemed to bug less about what I want or don't want to be turned on.
