Ah, the price of progress.

I'm assuming that these people would prefer to go back to dialup or dsl?

No, but they'd prefer to go with Verizon FiOS where these problems aren't as big.

I'm pretty sure they would prefer to have something other than a monopoly broadband provider that has decided on a half-ass solution to advanced broadband that saves the company money and results in refrigerator-size boxes on their front lawns.

Is ATT's VDSL better than dial-up? you betcha. Do the customers that have no other choice have to like the way it's implemented? absolutely not.

False dichotomy. The choices are not limited to

1) Slow connections

2) Large lump of equipment placed with no concern as to appearance

There is another possibility:

3) Large piece of equipment sited in such a way as to reduce its unsightliness

Outrageous that these people would want some say over box placement in their own communities.

Hmm.. let's ask the electric company to move their boxes and we can burn candles for light and wood for heat.

Well, actually they may. Broadband isn't quite as important as people think outside of the technology echo chamber. The average person is probably pretty happy with a slower, and cheaper, connection. Or perhaps they have a gut feeling that broadband can be delivered without VRADS on every block by using more elegant technology like FTTH.

Either way, I think AT&T could solve this problem by simply offering the home owners who get VRADS free service and/or compensation. They pay for space on poles, why shouldn't they pay for space on lawns?

Hmmm.....
I wish I had a say when these were put in my back yard and alleyway. The top photo is my power transformer - at least there are no poles or lines since it's below-ground.

The bottom photo is, from the left, Comcast/Time Warner/Whatever, and old GTE/Verizon terminal, and I'm not sure what the one on the right is.

Oh, and let's not forget my cinder block to cover a hole my neighbor's dog dug underneath the fence and was getting out daily.

Food for thought: »www.hartfordbusiness.com/news5691.html

One thing I would like to know why some developers use alleyways while others don't. Placing stuff like VRAD's, transformers, etc. becomes a little more bearable for the homeowner, but still an eyesore. I realize older developments don't have this option.

Also, can the VRAD's be reduced in size for future deployments? What about a WIMAX solution vs. using existing copper from the VRAD?

AT&T warned of possible widespread disruption of its U-verse video, Internet and phone service if it is forced to obtain retroactive permission from neighboring property owners for the installation of hundreds of refrigerator-sized utility boxes that power the service.
Translation: AT&T threatened anyone who objected.

U-Verse is DSL. AT&T doesnt use these boxes to string fiber to the home, just to the VRAD.

If the ATT places the VRADs in front of houses that have had their value plummet due fact that they're now considered toxic, will the future owner of that asset be eligible for Superfund monies?

I've seen a lot of VRADs in San José, California. I can't say that I have seen any on front lawns. I can say that every VRAD I have seen is adjacent to a cross-connect box. Are you saying that the same communities which allowed the telco to install a cross-connect box on a front lawn is having second thoughts, when a second box is added to that location?

the service they're actually selling is DSL just in higher speeds. So they're not actually going back to anything.

No they prefer that AT&T would run fiber to their home which does NOT require a huge box in their front yard.

The funniest part about that threat was if they carried through with it, they would have to credit tons of money back to customers for service disruptions. They are basically threatening to hurt themselves.
