Now, there are some aruable point mixes in Blood, namely Bloodworms & Vampiric Blood. Some people like putting these into Rune Tap, Mark of Blood, or any combination of which, but everything else is pretty cookie-cutter standard. I use the choices I list there (Vampiric Blood & Bloodworms) because I don't finding myself needing multiple "oh s***" buttons. The extra DPS & mitigation of Bloodworms were worth it in my opinion.

As for which of the two specs to use, again, it's your call. It comes down to playstyle and possibly Glyph avaliability. Do you like constantly having steady damage up (Unholy Blight) or mass temporary damage every minute or two (Dancing Rune Weapon)? Hit the target test dummies and find out which works best for you. Personally, I went DRW because it times very well for my uber DPS macro (Hysteria + DRW + DPS Trinket).

Also, as a side note, for the Unholy Blight spec, wether or not you want to max Necrosis or Ravenous Dead is argueable. +4% auto attack damage vs. +1% Strength is really too close to call.

Firstly, focus on getting your hit rating via enchantments, gems, and drops to as close to 300 as possible.

Secondly, google "dps DK help" or "DK pre-raid gear" or something related to get a good idea of the available gear out there. Start doing daily quests for the different factions--all of them have different gear and enchantments that can advance what you have.

Make friends with a reliable tank or healer and start running heroic dungeons to get the possible drops out there. This will be your biggest source of advancement--wearing tabards will advance your reputation for every mob/boss you kill and you'll get drops.

As for rotations, pick a tree you like (blood has self-healing and huge single target crits, frost capitalizes on Obliterate and Howling Blast mechanics and Unholy has all the little DoTs that add up to massive damage) and run with it.

Your usual rotation goes something like this:

Icy Touch, Plague Strike, blood rune strike (blood strike or Heart Strike if blood) x2, then Death Strike (blood), Obliterate (frost), or Scourge Strike (unholy). Then dump your runic power thru death coils (blood), frost strikes (frost), or Unholy Blight (Unholy, then death coils when it's up.

Pick talents in your tree that turn the other runes into death runes so you can use your tree's special strikes with those runes.

Each tree has special abilities: Blood has a Dancing Rune Weapon that copies your attacks, and Hysteria that increases your damage at cost to your health. Frost has Howling Blast, an attack that can crit on any mob close for massive damage. Unholy has a permanent pet, Unholy Blight (damages any enemy close), an extra disease, and a Gargoyle.

Each class also can buff your entire group or raid: Blood has Abomination's Might (+10% strength). Frost has Icy Talons (I think that's the name)-- +20% melee haste. Unholy has a third disease that increases all magic attacks against the target by 13% (casters will love you).

In some relatively quick testing (~3-4 minutes on a raid-level dummy) I find that they are roughly the same dps with the frost build being ever so slightly more dps. That is without using Hysteria, which, over 3 minutes, would probably balance it out.

Right now I can't find the HB glyph or the DRW glyph, so that would impact overall dps. Right now I'm doing:

IT > BS > HB > OB > FS dump

I want to change that to:
HB > OB > BSx2 > FS dump || HB > OBx2 > FS dump.

2 things out of curiosity for blood, though:

1) What rotation are you using to get 4k dps on a non-heroic target dummy? I was averaging 3k dps on the raid boss target dummies (though granted, they were at ~1 hp, so diseases didn't tick right) in both specs and consider myself decently geared (Deathaxe on Mal'Ganis).

2) Is anyone using Obliterate over Death Strike as blood? I did some testing on the PTR and on live and they both push roughly the same dps overall though OB is more than DS by a small amount, which seems to be made up with the extra disease dmg. It made me a tad squishier (according to my healer), but no more spikey damage.

Getbuffed updated their talent calculators, but I can't get them to load. I had 10 points in blood (blade barrier and bladed armor) and 5 in unholy (anticipation).

I believe improved frost presence gives better mitigation than what I was going to see in unholy. Glyphed Unbreakable Armor is ungodly, as is an 18-second Icebound Fortitude (on a 1min CD!) This means that I will have a cooldown going 2/3rds of the time (IBF for 18sec, UA for 20 sec, then 22 sec down before IBF pops again). I also have my monarch crab dodge trinket, the essence of gossamer tanking trinket, and the anti-magic shell to dampen a caster's punch.

All in all I was very happy. I had time to run H CoS and H UK before work, and as long as I used cooldowns on fights where more than 3 elites were banging on me, it was easymode. Recount wasn't updated so I had no idea what my dps was, but I saw frost strikes critting above 4k frequently, and D&D + HB is just ungodly for snap aggro.

I also love imp. frost presence--I keep my 30k hp when in blood presence! Very fun times. :-D

The 3min CD before made your DPS lack and not stay consistent. 3min. seemed like an eternity to wait on for this to come bac up. Now with only a 1.5min CD and (eventually) Glyphed, this talent will be godly.

I don't like the change to Blade Barrier, and the Blood Gorged experise change is also lame.

Last night I was able to pull a consistent 4k dps on the non heroic target dummies. With no other buffs except Horn.

BTW this morning....I absolutely recked a Human Frost DK with 31k health in tank gear. If you're above cap, then its a waste.

Make your gear decisions accordingly. I'm at hit cap with a Jawbone equipped. When spec'd Blood, I am expertise capped as well. Having a weapon with Black Ice (which I assume by what you guys wrote and not necessarily by looking it up) has hit on it, which would be a wasted stat for me.

Make your gear decisions intelligently based upon that. If you need hit, get the weapon with hit. If you can get this weapon and remove hit trinkets for damage trinkets, or replace hit gems with STR gems, then get the hit weapon.

If you're like me, and have achieved hit cap without the use of hit trinkets/enchants/gems and just get it naturally with your gear, don't go for Black Ice.

If you're diseaseless blood, stay with the jawbone. +Str is your strongest attribute and mitigates a lot better then AP. Also it'll be more beneficial when you receive the Kings buff since it's a % increase in stats. If you're AP heavy you'll receive a far less dmg bonus.

Also what Ghastly said isn't entirely true, the stats he mentioned: agility, hit, AP are most beneficial for a dual wield build - which is very similar to a rogue. This doesn't mean ignore them because you always want to be hit capped. Yeah I forgot to mention, that that pole arm i'm using along with my Cloak are basically the only 2 +AP items i'm using. Everything else I'm using is all +strength.

I'm currently using the Black Ice pole arm on my DK. IMO, it's a ton better, with the Attack Power, Agility, huge amount of Hit rating and Crit. I think the speed is even faster then that mace also.

As diseaseless blood, and posted earlier in this post, like page 1, you want to do Obliterate x2 > HS x2 > RP dump DC.

At most you can do 2 DC's w/o a proc (forget what it's called). With the proc you get 3 DC's. 1 DC == some downtime. 2 DC's == maybe .5 sec downtime. 3 DC's == ~.75 sec missed time in your core rotation.

Deathcoil will pretty much always be lowest DPS, so only do it if there is nothing else to do.

With the frost spec I'm doing ~2500 dps on the boss training dummy. I do about the same average as blood, but if I don't use RBW and Hysteria, it's only 2200-2300 dps (bursts to 2700ish or more, and then drops). Both cases are over about 3 mins (1 horn) due to time constraints.

You didn't address the question of weapon enchant and I'm curious if you, or anyone, has tried anything besides Fallen Crusader? I'm largely thinking Razorice which stacks to 5 times and gives frost vulnerability (not sure if this is a dmg boost to frost or FR reduction like COE, in which case bleh), but 20% frost boost from Cinderglace (or whatever it's called) seems potentially effective if it procs enough.

I did some testing, but again, only 3 minute deals due to time so no normalization of the numbers really. Those tests showed them all to be roughly the same for me. I played with it for a week or two later on after 3.0.8 came out.

Frost Strike is a hit, not a spell, even though it does Frost damage. It's a good build if you're lacking on the expertise because it cannot be dodged, parried or blocked. If you're at melee hit cap, you'll never miss. However, spell hit cap is 17%. This can be reduced via talents and raid utility to a minimum of 11%. If you're not at spell hit cap, then it'll make sense as to why you'll see Icy Touch misses (I'm betting most frequently, on the pull, where the 3% hit debuff isn't applied yet).

The unholy versus blood presence debate depends largely upon RP generation. Your RP bar will only allow you to do 4 FS's at maximum. Currently, there's no gear/talent point combos that allow you to accumulate enough RP do consistantly do 4 Frost Strikes each rotation.

Because of this, Blood Presence is superior. This is even more so important because you don't have 4pc T7, so your obliterates aren't generating as much RP as an ideal gear setup would.

Your rotation is perfect. Very perfect, actually, since you understand the reasoning behind the "Obliterate if Rime". No 4pc bonus means using HB more often.

I think you're fine right now for being frost. For fresh-leveled 80 gear, putting out 1800-2000 DPS with my gear in heros. Server must be heavy on the geared 'tard side, as I keep par (or pass) some DPS that're epiced out.

An average rotation is 3-4 Frost Strikes, so 5-6 of my attacks are frost. Blood Strike is marginal damage (in aoe situations, this will probably be pest for bigger over HT dmg), and Obliterate is usually only 1 hit per cycle. With so much frost damage, is one of the frost damage increase enchants better than fallen crusader? I've only had time for short testing and they seem almost even at the moment.

Which pressence do you use for this? I find that I can do 3 Frost Strikes within a rotation before IT is back up. However, I'd like to do all 4 if I have the RP. I can do that with Unholy Press, but with Blood Pres, the 4th FS eats into the time of the next IT (though frost fever is still up). So, do I stay in blood pres and go back to IT when it's up, stay in blood pres and burn through all my RP, or go unholy and burn through all my RP before IT is up? I'm inclined toward blood, full RP dump, but not 100% sure where the numbers lie.

Lastly, do you know if there is a new frost sigil on PTR? Icy Touch is only 1 cast per rotation, so increasing that seems almost silly. My current sigil hopes that my blood strike will proc more crit. Yay. I'd like to see one that benefits FS or something.

In my experience, there are VERY few procs that should be saved for the end of a rotation, as you lose out on the chance of an extra proc or two holding onto it. With that in mind, I would use the HB procs as they come up, and while it might slow your rotation a bit, or even cause a fumbling of keys, unless the dmg of the proc is significantly lower than the base dmg of your rotation, i would use it.
32 rp with the glyph, plus i got the two talent points that generate additional rp, and the icy touch glyph which poops 10 more rp per IT

i threw down into a frost spec, picked up the icy touch sigil and went to work on some bosses...dps didnt change much...
but i did manage to get grim toll and my t7.5 chest...
my new question (which is fortold by the trinket) is based on grim tolls proc to armor pen, should i go back to blood for the heavier strikes? i think there are too many spells in frost for grim toll to do its work (unless armor pen works with spells too). my rotation with the frost spec is:
IT, PS, OB, BS, BS, FS dump
then IT IT IT FS FS IT IT IT FS dump + howling blast if procced

i think doing howling blast at the end may actually hurt the rotation because howling blast might proc again in the IT rotation...

Thanks for the dieaseless rotation and spec you gave me last week. x2 Hysteria, x2 DRW just blows by everyone in the dps meter. I pulled out 5.2k dps on 25man Patch (1st dps'r) and 7.1k (2nd) dps on Thaddius. I also managed to get the Valorous helm off Kel putting my at 3 pieces t7. Currently trying to farm for Ace and 2 of Nobles for this coming week. How do you like yours? hmmm. Anyways just wanted to say thanks for your reply last week.

As for spec, blood is a lot of fun. I did 6k dps this past week on 25 man Thaddius. Not spectacular, but not bad considering. It's always fun getting mocked for having green bracers (go go expertise...no love from naxx yet) and heirloom shoulders (again, no love...good str and crit) along with Armageddon and then posting in the top 1/2 of the dps on every boss fight and even higher on the ones where you stand there and beat on the boss.

I've done a bit of 21/50/0 frost as well (oddly, I haven't touched unholy) and it was pretty good. Overall they seem to be about the same dps-wise with the frost build seeming to be more steady dps vs. bloods seemingly high burst.

I like blood for how simple it is. I have 3 80's and 5 > 70 on their way up. Sometimes I like to beat on things w/o thinking about which of 27 abilities I'm going to use next. Hysteria increases physical damage dealt by 20% for 30 seconds (nearly all damage as diseaseless blood, minus death coils) and DRW summons a copy of your weapon that does exactly whats you do and hits hard, but not quite as hard as you do. When you obliterate for 10k, it'll obliterate for around half that. When you auto attack? It auto attacks. When you death coil, it death coils. Ping 3 death coils back to back and you can hear the machine gun of death coils go off. It's when that occurs that I'm able to push upwards of 9-10k DPS on stationary fights like Patchwerk and watch as I take a massive lead against others on DPS.

As simple as the rotation sounds, it takes quite a bit of real practice to squeeze out the last few points of damage. I'd post links and help you right now if I could but I'm at work. Almost all those sites are blocked.

Yours main attacks will be IT and HB, so you want the sigil of conscience or whatever it's called.

Other than that just research the 0/32/39 and 0/33/38 builds. These are the most common dual wield specs right now. Take it from there and make it your own. There's no reason you have to be a cookie cutter build, even if it is the best DPS. Like I said earlier, 2H frost is just not for me. anyway, with the blood spec using a twohander vs dwing, i in the end found that though unholy has massive aoe damage, from spreading diseases, unholy blight and dnd, blood still wins in the end vs single target mobs and bosses.
and for the record i beat my unholy record against patchwerk with the blood spec, leaving me to collect the hate of our #1 dpser (who does well in the aoe field, but is now beat by me in single targeting)

That is the complete wrong rotation for unholy lol. You basically mixed diseaseless blood spec and frost/unholy spec.

This is the typical unholy rotation:
IT - PS - BS - BS - SS - Unholy blight
SS - SS - SS - RP Dump w/ DC

Gonna try the 2H frost tonight. I'll tell you how it goes. We're doing 25man patchwerk so this'll be a perfect night to test it. I tested my blood spec before i reset my talents on the dummy in ebon and averaged about 2.5k in the middle boss dummy. This is w/o the dancing rune sword mind you, because I didn't want the burst dmg to factor in. I did about 2.7-2.8k as frost, so I'm pretty excited about the potential.

After this build, I plan to and hopefully I'll have the gear, I'm going to try the DW frost.

My current rotation will be similar to yours but not exact.
Rune tap whenever it's up
IT - OB - OB - BS - FS spam

Wouldn't be all that fair of a comparison. Arch is a 2H frost spec, and I can probably bet that most of those on that list you are referencing are DW Frost Spec. Both are highly gear dependent. I myself don't have the haste/hit gear yet to go DW, but I definitely plan to because it looks like the best DPS build thus far. Downside is that it requires a lot of itemization. Blood has more burst. Blood has bigger numbers. I rarely see anything above 10k in raids as frost. Frost has good AoE, but it's clunky. Unholy's AoE is more passive or more DoT based. Frost AoE requires changing rotations around maximizing Howling Blast. Blood still managed massive single target damage and the Heart Strike Cleave was usually enough to compete against other AoE folks. The only thing Frost really has over the other specs is Frost Strike. It's the best RP Dump available.

I'll probably swap to Unholy soon, since they seem to be putting top numbers out on hardmode Sarth... and that's basically all that's left for us right now is 3D Sarth. We did 2D Sarth rather easily.

I like so many things in each tree, it's rough to decide which spec to stay.

I was initially on the UP presence side. The math basically says that when you have 8 GCD's per rotation, UP wins by 4% and gains as the GCD's per rotation increaess.

(BT doesn't trigger GCD). Howling Blast has a 15% chance to proc per rotation.

I've decided to add Blood Tap into my Blood Strike macro to cast it whenever its available. using that, my rotation is:

IT, BS, OBx2, (HB if Rime proc'd), FSx3, repeat.

Blood Tap to pop a rune into a death Rune is only needed at the start. After that, Blood Strike automatically converts a rune into a Death Rune, allowing you to keep this rotation up infinitely.

Edit: Glyphs.. Obliterate, Icy Touch, Frost Strike. I need 51 points in Blood in order to get DRW. Because of this, I need filler points. In times where shit hits the fan, I can use VB and Rune tap to self heal. Even though i don't think, I've pulled aggro, and a VB/Pet/Death Pact/Rune Tap can offset a lot of the damage I'll take.

Ignore Patchwerk #1. They wanted me to off-tank because one of the tanks had a Comcast issue. I didn't die, but one of our other tanks did. They brought in another tank in instead and let me DPS. Look at Patch #2 to see my DPS.

Click on the second Patchwerk. Click on my name and look at the realtime DPS chart. You can see that for nearly 45 seconds (and my recount also reflects this), I was at 9500 DPS. As time went on, it tapered more and more.

But as you can see, I drastically outscale the rest of my raid members on that fight at our gear level.

DK tanking has a few "oh shit" buttons and a couple of mitigation buttons to keep maintained, but for the most part, it is still largely about threat generation, where standard DPS rotations apply, swapping a strike out for a mitigation cooldown instead.

As for "nerfing" the abilities... yes, I agree that once Blizzard finds this out, that they'll modify it. Personally, I don't mind mashing 2-3 buttons. It allows me to focus more on the fight, rather than juggling cooldowns/rotations/timers/etc. OBx2, HSx2, DC Spam.

In my 10-man, typically the whole lot of us sit towards the top and juggle first place on boss depending on who it favors. Last night, no one touched me. Second place was 20% behind me.

I think that I've gotten everything out of 10-man Naxx that I possibly can now. I need to save my 25-man DKP so I can get a 220 DPS weapon and cap out on gear. I still have some upgrades to go.

I've tanked with both Frost and Unholy. I preferred Unholy to Frost, but that's more of a playstyle choice. Both worked. I didn't die and I held threat with both specs.

Have you tried tanking to any serious degree as well? Since Unholy is my DPS build, I think I'll probably go with Frost for tanking - the up-front damage offered by this spec is just too hard to pass up, even though I know Unholy can do well also.

I definitely feel that way. I get the feeling they want diseases to be a major part of playing a Death Knight, and if the cookie cutter is to not even use diseases, I think something will change. Perhaps not a nerf, but maybe a buff to the diseases.

I then took that information and amongst other DK's that I feel are skilled (at varying gear levels) and here's the results I came up with.

Dualwield Frost took a big hit. Especially the fast/fast build. Killing Machine is a proc-per-minute based talent now, so it is kinda worthless to have a fast main hand. The off hand still has some value as to being fast, but is no longer as essential as it used to be. People are gasping for air anywhere to find some way to make DW happen. The only way that seems, is to find the slowest main hand possible to maximize Frost Strikes.

For those of you who are undergeared and are looking for a 2H spec, 17/0/54 is still a very strong spec (assuming the kinks have been hot patched over the last few days). Same rotation applies, same playstyle. Capitalize on the Ghoul still for extra damage since its stats went up.

For those of you who are geared enough for it, I think Blood is the way to go. To define "geared", I do mean that you have the Obliterage Sigil and at least 2pc T7 and preferably are hit capped(8%) an expertise capped, including talents. You should have no greens and if you have blues, they should be comparable to epics that are currently out there. I had an undergeared DK go with my setup in a raid last night and he just could not hold his own against me versus my gear, but he told me that even as undergeared as he was compared to me, he said that his personal numbers went higher than it did before.

Before the patch, I was doing 4400 DPS on Patch(25-man) as Unholy. Last night, we full-cleared Naxx10. My DPS was 5200. I cannot imagine what it would be like if I had a full compliment of raid buffs in Naxx25 on Patch. I'll know again this Sunday, but I hit like a mother fuckin truck now.

After last night, I'm 5/5 T7 instead of 3/5. The 4pc bonus will help, but is not critical. I have the Heigan Sigil and I have the Grim Toll (armor penetration proc trinket). I also have Jawbone (2H wep). I sincerely believe that those three things are the largest contributors to my damage (Check my Armory on Novaus, ignore the lack of enchant/gems in my head/legs. I got them last night and went to bed after ther aid).

I spent a lot of time on the target dummies. Yes, the numbers were fun to sit there and watch as me and my dancing rune weapon cleaved and hit 4 targets at the same time, and it made for a temporary padding of numbers, but it wasn't practical in raids.

I used the 51/0/20 build. If you're copying my build, the points spent in Vampiric Blood, Mark of Blood and Corpse Explosion are all optional. There aren't many better blood alternatives, and you could probably spend 1 point for spell hit in the Unholy tree instead of Corpse Explosion, but fuck it, I wanted to try it and to be honest, I think it was worth it. I'm hit capped on all my attacks and I can't remember the last time a death coil missed.

I did not try 51/13/7 and after last night, I really don't have any intention to. I tried a whole variety of rotations:

(Blood Presence)
Oblit, PS, IT, HSx2 - DC Spam
HSx4, Oblit - DC Spam

(Blood and Unholy Presence)
Oblitx2, HSx2 - DC Spam
HSx6 - DC Spam

Those two rotations were good, but I found that for the first rotation, it required too much of an optimal setting, I wasn't utilizing my RP correctly and I couldn't take time out to pop Sudden Doom procs, otherwise I ended up not spending my runes the instant they were active.

In the second rotation, I found that diseaseless didn't seem to have a negative impact like it did pre 3.0.8. The Glyph of Obliterate seems to scale better and Obliterate seems to scale better overall and not rely so much on diseases. In Blood Presence, I still had a problem of having a lopsided rotation. Runes weren't getting spent fast enough. In Unholy Presence, i'd have dead time in line 1, and line 2 felt sloppy with timing sudden doom procs.

So, I finally tried this:

(Blood Presence)
OBx2, HSx2, DC Spam

No second line, just use that rotation. Trash, boss, aoe, doesn't matter. Use it. I tried D&D/IT/PS/Pest spam, but it didn't work. I used Corpse Explosion as my RP dump as available for AoE pulls. I stuck with that rotation, the simplest of all DK rotations available.

I used Hyseteria in conjunction with Dancing Rune Weapon. I hit like I never hit before. Even on Patch, I popped obscene amounts of damage. I ended 10-man Patch DPS (according to recount) with 5200 DPS. 800 DPS higher than I did in the 25-man version where I had more buffs!

My highest obliterate crit on a non-gimmick fight was 12228. I hit that on a trash mob. Maybe all the procs aligned or something, but I saw that and shit my pants. Diseaseless obliterate for over 12k, hahaha. Heart Strikes are still relatively weak compared to Obliterate, but when they hit two mobs, its powerful.... and I think that the damage of a cleaving Heart Strike is still above and beyond what AoE seems to be capable of, especially when its only 2-4 mobs.

I may see about re-adjusting my spec. It's wrapped around diseases still (like all 51/0/20 specs are) and I'm going to see if there's a way to sneak points and place them elsewhere. I don't really see any alternatives, so probably not and if my tests don't pan out so well, I can just flip to diseases again without respecing.

So, that's my two cents about DK's only 2 days after 3.0.8. I'm going to continue to use 51/0/20, OBx2, HSx2, DC Spam until more sound numbers come out. If you're geared for it, I recommend you give it a shot.

For everyone else, I'd probably stick to 17/0/54 Unholy and if you're a dualwield kinda guy, maybe look to going back to a 2H until someone comes out with a better DW spec.
