Haha its not SA III more Type II's then III. Yes I'd LOVE to see a full 1ghz system, but I'm not the owner of Comcast. Yes if it were my way, it would be a 1ghz system with over 100+ HD channels and Docsis 3.0 with over 4 channels bonded, and cheaper rates, blah blah blah, but instead I have to live with what I got. It's not a perfect world, and Comcast IS a hell of a lot better in other areas. Just not Berks County. Yes I told the higher-up's we need to make changes, and they say yeah we do, but can't do anything about it right now. The way there talking next year will be the bigger changes to get ready for Docsis 3.0.

How about replacing those SAIII LE's, trunk and bridger amps with 860 MHz or 1 GHz electronics. I don't consider it up to date unless that is done. 750 MHz of bandwidth isn't good enough for everybody anymore.

Well I wish they would do something. Over 10 years now at 750 MHz, you would think the system would of depreciated enough to make an upgrade the normal thing to do.

Other providers are doing it...
»Cox: Fully Upgraded To 1Ghz By 2011

If your all too familiar with Berks County, maybe you've seen Service Electric's upgrades going on. Magnavox 750 to C-COR 870 gear. Lots more fiber pulled, much smaller homes passed per node, etc...

Wouldn't it be better if you could work with the state of the art equipment? How about getting some SA Gainmaker 1 GHz gear put in? Or C-COR Optimax 3100 1 GHz segmentable nodes and FlexNet 901e amps or something. There's tons of options out there. The taps can handle it. SA Multimedia Stretch taps are rated to 1 GHz.

What do you think the chances are that they could push to Ch 121 (780 MHz ceeling). They are doing that in Pottstown/Norristown and that's rated 750 MHz per FCC registration information. Heck Williamsport is pushing to test Ch 120 on their 750 MHz gear (as is York I believe). Why not up the levels a bit on 119,120,121 and run 64QAM on Ch 121 just to be safe. Careful not to clip the Tx laser of course...

It IS possible, so what's stopping them? My node looks like an SA 6940. According to the datasheets: »www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps8···ist.html they are 870 MHz nodes. So if we have decent nodes, could they just upgrade our amps?

You said it Cypher, I live in Pottsville and we would welcome a system upgrade. I give Comcast a tremendous amount of money each month and I expect to get the maximum return on investment. If I pay the same amount as the people in Chicago and they get maybe 25% more content then we do, then I should get a 25% discount. No ore excuses Comcast. SDV, Tru2Way, Tivo, Docsis 3.0...these are a few of my favorite things.

The thing thats stopping us is money. Service electric doesn't even run amps and LE's, it's pretty much node then tap, node then tap. they have been doing that for years, and they have been on a 860mhz system for a bit. Yet they still suck cause their feeder is half the size.

We can't just go and upgrade the Reading area because everyone wants us to. Unfortunately our system is poor, and corporate won't do anything about it. I don't know when it's going to happen. Docsis 3.0 has to come here within the next two years for the 2010 law in effect, so you will see changes within the year. Just waiting on the money. As for Pottsville, thats a completely different system from us. Thats what you call old plant. They are very far behind.

It's funny how Comcast can raise their prices every year but cry poverty when it comes to upgrading their systems. Comscam is what they should change their name to in my opinion.

Easy to say from your position. But if you're running a corporation the first priority is delivering stockholder value. If that takes siphoning capital from lower income neighborhoods to upgrade higher income/more demanding customers then that's what they should be expected to do. If you aren't satisfied, there are other options (satellite). It's really just the nature of business and should not be met with surprise or a lack of understanding.

·Comcast
·Verizon Online DSL

I already ditched Crookcast for Verizon DSL/Phone along with DTV and never been happier, my bill is $60 dollar less and I have better quaility service especially with DTV and my 85 HD channels. I will never go back to Comcast unless they are the only privider avaliable if I ever move.

@comcast.net

If only FiOs were available in my area (Reading system), I'd dump Comcrap yesterday. Comcast gives us the "whoa is me" story about not having the money to upgrade their systems, but they have PLENTY of money to hire lobbyists to work against expansion of the TeleCos throughout PA and protect their legal monopoly. They've fought FiOs in the state legislature in Harrisburg and the Philly city counsel. How about they upgrade their systems in order to attempt to compete with Fios when it comes, rather than delay the inevitable while customers/hostages suffer?

Well said ckdk1.

Everyone I know wants Fios. Verizon has an opportunity to make a killing here but yet they show no interests.

Regarding Service Electric, it's real close to where I live and if I move, most likely it would be in a Service Electric area. Sure their feeder is smaller, but the fiber is pushed out so much further so it's pretty much a wash. Cable Services LLC has been doing lots of work replacing Magnavox gear with C-COR gear and running lots of new fiber and feeder. Right now they are in Amity Township working in the developments behind the Redners and around Daniel Boone H.S. Earlier last year they ripped up roads in my Dads development running new lines and replacing pedestals along the way. They did Farming Ridge in Exeter not too long ago either. They are a prime example of what a cable operator should be doing. Constantly keeping the system up to date so they can offer what they want without any limitations. Their signal levels are good 38~40 SNR's on modems. I'm just surprised with the very small node size that 10mbps is the top speed. With maybe 100 homes per node they should be able to do Cablevision style 30mbps without even using DOCSIS 3.0. I guess that limitation is more from PTD supplying the headend with what it would need.

I spoke to a friend last night, and he was told that Fios probably would be coming to the Reading area in about two years. So, if this is true, Comcast does not really have to bust their tail to upgrade our HD channels. I want to believe Tech and just be patient but it is very hard seeing other Comcast ares getting channels that we just do not have. Maybe things will change but it is really starting to be a grind!!!!

@comcast.net

Don't hold your breath for Fios in Berks County,on Saturday I was talking to one of my neighbors who is a Muhlenberg Twp supervisor and I asked him about Verizon and Fios and he said he has not heard anything,there is not even a draft franchise agreement to review and nothing going on.

Plus how long do you think it would take to get a franchise agreement with the city of Reading? You know city council will try to milk Verizon for every last penny and if they start building in the Townships and Boroughs and not in the city you know what they will be accused of because of the city's demographics.

ckdk1

@comcast.net

It would seem that the City of Reading would be the LAST place in BerksCo that FiOs would want to go into. Not much of a customer base because of the extreme poverty, although their Spanish language package might be popular. Let's face it, a fair number of the 6.2 million people for whom the DTV shutoff was moved live in the city. I'd think they'd start with areas like Wyomissing/West Lawn/Sinking Spring/Shillington, Exeter, Temple/Muhlenberg, Leesport, Amity/Douglasville, maybe Hamburg etc.
