Ok, as most of you can see I have overhelmed the ISDN forums with newbie questions. Here are a few more. I have a couple of Cisco 804s on the way. So I called ATT and requested the line installed. During the call they asked if I need a RJ45 connector installed.
What is the RJ45 for? I expected 2 RJ11 to plug into the Cisco Router.
MY ISP is providing a ISDN modem so I will need a RJ45 jack. ATT want 145.00 to install a jack. I've installed several RJ45 jack for ethernet. How do you wire to phone lines to one RJ45? Saving the $145 by doing it myself would be great.
There is currently a wire from the pole to my house that has 3 pair of wires (6 total). Will I need another line run to the house?

| The RJ45 is for inside wiring connection. On the 804 you'll have to connect an ethernet cable from the RJ45 jack to the ISDN U interface on the 804. It's possible to use a regular phone cable to do this is you're careful about lining the center pins on each end.
The RJ11 ports on the 804 are for connecting telephones to to make and receive voice calls.

Whether or not the RJ45 that needs to be installed uses the same wiring scheme as for ethernet I don't know. A bit of googling finds this: »www.landfield.com/faqs/LANs/cabl···-20.html
Time permitting I might be able to take a picture or 2 of the wiring in the RJ45 that AT&T installed for me back in April if that'll be any use.
You probably won't need an extra line run if you have 3 pairs unless your home is older and doesn't have as many pairs in it or if you have several landlines. |

Photos would be great. So at this point I'm guessing I don't need the RJ45 jack, I can use one of the existing phone jacks in the house since I won't have any analog lines. Once the install is completed I should have ISDN to all my existing previously wired RJ11 jacks?? |

The other box on the right is the standard RJ11 which is unused. As you can see mine was installed inline with the RJ11. My understanding of what AT&T told me was that I'd need an RJ45 for each jack i wanted to use with the ISDN. But that may (or may not) have anything to do with my house having 50 year old wiring in it. The tech that installed my ISDN had to install a second demarc box outside.
It might be possible to run it over the existing phone jacks but that's not something I can guarantee will work. Maybe someone else can give you a clear answer on that. I just know that my ISDN only works on the one RJ45 jack. The RJ11 that it's connected to is POTS still. |

Thanks for the photo. It's a little dark. If you get time can you tell me what color goes to what number. That would probably be all I would need to wire my own.

It looks like the only two wires from the ISDN are needed to connect to pins 4 and 5 on the RJ45 jack. |

I'm not saying it can't be done, just what my experience was.
If they aren't going to charge you extra for putting the RJ45 jack, have them go ahead and put it in. Just my 2 cents. |

| I was assuming they would use the existing analog wiring since I no longer have analog service. That would provide the service to every jack in the house. Now if they put it on a different pair. Hopefully they will wire one RJ11 with no charge. If not, I'll wire the jack nearest my computer. The RJ45 is $145 for the install, rather outrageous in my opinion.
My install has been postpone till Tuesday. We'll see how it goes. |

Hello pny,
The installer will normally not want to touch your existing wiring and want to run a dedicated line for your new ISDN line. Why would you want the ISDN service to every jack in the house? Are you going to be moving the cisco router around? You will not be able to connect a regular phone to any of those jacks that are ISDN. You must have ISDN capable phones to do that. I am not sure what you are trying to do but if you want to be able to hook a regular phone up and use the ISDN line with the regular phones on your existing jacks then you will have to connect one of the pots ports on the cisco 804 to your regular lines and use a seperate isdn line to hook up the cisco router.

Valles Mines, MO | The main objective is to have at least one rj11 isdn capable and avoid the $145 rj45 install fee. I just wasn't sure how it would be installed since the house is already patched for analog and I will never have a analog line. |

| The install went good. The blue pair was used to pins 4 and 5. I was skeptical at first since I was cutting the banwidth by 90%. I don't regret it and I won't be looking back. Even those heavy grahic/ad websites load well. Most everything else is so much faster. Latency hangs around 85ms, a far cry from 2300ms on satellite. Hopefully there will be some better options after my 2 year contract. Thanks for everyone's assistance. |

The cheapest quote I've gotten in my area is $170 a month if I sign a 3yr contract.

| Just keep checking with them every couple of months, you might get lucky. My link extension charge disappeared in January. I was told they made some infrastructure changes and the link extension was no longer required. Prior to January it would have cost me $130.00 |
