1 edit | yes this makes almost no sense. only reason i can think of is that they need to put in a different RG.
if it wasn't for the truck roll i'd so do this.

|
 | reply to keithww Yea..They called me a couple of weeks ago trying to get me to switch from DSL to U-Verse.
I have 128 static IPs for my hosting business. Those are on ATT DSL 6/1. I bought the block in 2001 for 400.00 flat. No monthly.
Now if I go to u-verse they want to charge me 40.00/mo for those same statics. If I did that in 2001 I would have paid almost 4000.00 for those same static IPs. Wow! Now that's kind of insulting.
I think I will stick with ATT DSL, It has been reliable and robust for the last 8 years and the speeds are fine for my business..Besides I heard that the ping times with u-verse can be pretty bad.
Try a flat rate for your static IPs again AT&T and stop trying to squeeze small businesses. Especially in this economy |
|
 | reply to keithww I know it doesn't help someone who needs static IPs for a business, but I use free service from DYNDNS to map the dynamic IP to an alias so that I can log into a VPN router I have in the DMZ+ on the RG without knowing my IP. |
|
 | reply to keithww Is this a real block ( 8 = 5 usable ) or is this the pseudo-static assigment stuff that I think we used to see with I believe the netopia routers? |
|
apeface join:2000-09-16 Mckinney, TX kudos:3 | reply to keithww No, they are real blocks. They way we have it configured on the the RG and through the network is pretty...odd. |
|
 | Does this use a new RG where you don't have to be double NAT'd? Can you put the RG in bridge mode or is it the same BS crappy 2wire crap they send out with uverse? |

Will this set up include a vdsl modem that can be bridged?
The 2 wire gateway is useless in a business environment. |

apeface join:2000-09-16 Mckinney, TX kudos:3 | reply to keithww Its the same gateway and they way it is configured will work fine for any enviroment. |

 | reply to keithww A better question is whit this 'addon' will the regular accounts start to change addresses every now and then? |

If I just sign up with a business account is the one IP I get static? I am pretty sure the answer is "no", you get an IP that does not appear to change unless you replace the RG, but it is not sold or guaranteed as "static". |
|
 | Are these available for residential users? Are we assigned a block of IPs that are not co-mixed with other residential customers?
ATT DSL did that. My static blocks were within residential blocks and it caused all sorts of grief with RBL lists.
Will they offer DNS delegation (as they do for DSL) ?
Is there someone inside at AT&T still left that knows about DNS and delegation?
Last time I went through that, I had to tell the people what to put in the named.conf file to properly delegate the IP blocks to me.

Can we get a plain VDSL modem and then connect the 2Wire via the Ethernet WAN port?
Or is there any way to use the TV service without the 2Wire?

 | reply to keithww I just got a static IP block and the tech showed up.. he didn't know what he was supposed to do because his work order was blank. So he asked me what I needed and when I told him I wanted static IPs, he stared at me blankly for a moment, then called the CO and the guy there said "Oh, yeah, we do all the work for that here in the office."
He never touched my equipment! He didn't even walk inside my house! So.. truck roll is unnecessary.
On another note, the RG gets both a static IP _and_ a revolving dynamic IP. If you hook a device that uses DHCP up to the RG and let it get an address that way, it's NATed behind the dynamic IP. If you manually configure it with a static IP, it uses whatever they assign you for the gateway. In my case, my block starts at .0 and ends at .7. My gateway is .6, and I can use .1 through .5 for whatever I want. |

Separate topic, but if you are using a second router hooked up to the RG in DMZplus mode, then there's an issue with the RG where DHCP responses to the other router get sent using the wrong server IP. So the other router eventually times out on DHCP renew and starts all over again. There are two hacky ways around this: add a rule to the second router's firewall to pass all DHCP packets, or set the second router to static IP. I do the latter, and while it's definitely a hack, it seems to work.
If you only have the RG, then I have no suggestions; never had problems with the directly connected setup. |
