What is the spell hit cap for a lvl 80 full arcane spec mage

I have an arcane mage and I keep hearing that spell hit is the first and most important stat to work on. Problem is I want to make sure I don't go over my spell hit cap.

I am currently at 298 for spell hit and 301 for spell haste. My crit is only 13%.

My understanding is that all caster hit caps are at 17% (not to be confused with melee hit cap which varies). At 17%, you then break it down from there. Do you have a shadowpriest in the raid? Yes? Then you only need 14% hit.

Assuming you have a shadowpriest, you now are looking at talents. How much hit rating do talents afford you? The first tier of arcane talents gives you 3% hit rating for your arcane talens. So now, if you've got an spriest, you only need 11%. 14% without.

I hope this answers your question.

I'm sitting at 300 spell hit rating myself, and I usually use a +40hit rating food buff bringing it up to around 340 for raids. Being affliction spec'd, I put max points into Suppression for the extra hit %. I'm also at almost 700 haste rating with a grand spellstone up, and about 13-14% spell crit. I could probably get a little more hit rating with re-gems but man... I love all that haste too much

With that, I very rarely...if ever..get spell misses. When I run 10man though with no shadow priest I notice a few more misses here and there.

FYI from what I have read 26.26 spell hit = 1% ( here is a great discussion of spell hit on the Mage forums »forums.worldofwarcraft.com/threa···72&sid=1 ) So for raids 368 is the magic number assuming there is a shadow priest for Misery or Druid that has Improved Faerie Fire in the raid. Arcane Mages rely on crit more then haste so if you have one item with haste that you could swap for some hit and/or crit you may be better off. I recommend you check out the link it has some real good info on spell hit. The 368 number is without talents that help hit and also without the 1% hit draenei's can give the raid.

Hey Archivis,

What spriest talent is the one that grants +3% hit to the group? I was looking at the talent tree and the only talent is Shadow Focus 3/3 which grants 3% hit and 6% reduced mana to shadow spells, however, it doesnt mention anything of granting the hit the party as well?

Thanks.

The talent is Misery (I looked it up) It makes Shadow Word Pain, Mind Flay, and Vamp touch spells increase the chance for harmful spells to hit your target by 1% per point for 24 secs and it adds some other damage to shadow priest spells.

Oh I see. But it doesnt mention anything about granting this ability to the party/raid?

Since that part is a debuff on the mob it will effect all who are casting on it.

You guys are too fast :P

Basically confirming what he said. 17% hit rating is whats needed on bosses, not on trash, so the issue with it being stacked on a target rather than party/raid wide isn't an issue.

Also in 3.0.8 Elemental Precision in the frost tree, tier 2 will be changed to affect all spells, so you can talent arcane to an 11% hitcap, 8% with Spriest

445raw, 419w/draenei.
367+AF or EP (NO misery/impFF), 341w/draenei
288+AF or EP + Misery/impFF, 262w/draenei

That should be right.

Let me add in an edit here, since I haven't looked on the PTR or anything to see if AF now stacks with Precision, if it does comes 3.0.8 you'll need 3% less hit if you can take both, but I'd hazard most builds will avoid it.

With the changes to Arcane Blast, an arcane Frost build might see more use in raiding for mana and hit issues.

It has been confirmed that Precision and AF stack for the hit reduction, but i don't remember on the mana cost:(

Yep. I switched to arcane last night. Too laggy to be able to tell if the spec is any good here's the updated numbers.

209 EP+AF (57/3/11) + misery/impFF or 183 w/draeni.

Folks can read it here.

Actually, if you spec 3% in elemental precision and the rest of the points down the arcane tree, since the most recent patch, this will mean that your hit cap is down to 14%. So, will arcane be the new raiding spec with the changes made to the arcane tree and arcane blast?

Here is a nice explanation of spell hit and hit caps. It also includes some great charts, including one near the end that expains everybody's hit cap levels for every combination of talents/race/spells.

Even a doofus-head like me can understand it

Actually it means that the hit cap is between 7-8% if you have misery/imp.FF and/or a draenei, providing you pick up EP.

I very strongly advise any Magi reading this post to beware of arcane spec.

It is incredibly mana intensive.Spirit and mp5 are very important stats to this build, as is intellect.

You really need a raid to back you up, and need to know the old arcane management tricks, proper cooldown use and if and when you can evo(it's still a massive dps loss but somtimes...). When to use 2AB over 3AB rotations and things like that.

But you can pull some really pretty numbers with it, but I don't see it currently scaling past Uldar with the way ffb scales in crit.
