Re: DD-WRT Wireless N Router/Access Point on the Cheap to Mid Pr

Okay it seems DD-WRT and Wireless N Only don't play nicely! My wireless N speed had dropped badly.. So I am sticking with the stock firmware which I had to re-flash it back. I guess those looking to use DD-WRT as your wired router or wireless but in G only then you're in luck. N lousy with DD-WRT. Stock firmware works better.. I'll get another one of these 834Bv2 to use upstairs for N if needed. They're cheap and stable with the stock firmware.. 128 max connections.

Results with DD-WRT and Wireless N

Don't know why the firmware only running like it stuck in G mode. N mode was awful.

Firmware shows === 130mbps @ 70mW
No matter what speed adjustment it will be the same.
It seems to be working like G Wireless Access. I needed to be N Wireless Access. Default Netgear works at the 270mbps.

DD-WRT Firmware Results showing 130mbps @ 70mW
Same tryng to force it to 270mpbs @ 80/90/100mW

Wireless Laptop #1 65mbps (in the same room as 834Bv2)
Wireless Laptop #2 65mbps (next room)
Wireless Laptop #3 52mbps (other side of the house)

Actual speed would be about -20mbps so 65mbps = 45mbps and the 52mbps = 32mbps

I had shutdown both Buffalo AP signal see if that would help same result if they were on or not.

Netgear Firmware Results show 270mbps

Wireless Laptop #1 135mbps (in the same room as 834Bv2)
Wireless Laptop #2 135mbps (next room)
Wireless Laptop #3 108mbps (other side of the house)

-20mbps so 135mbps = 115mbps and the 108mbps = 88mbps.

Big difference! So what happen to the DD-WRT.??

Testing ANTEC Aluminun Laptop USB Dual FAN with TEW-652BRP

Boy I thought this device had gone out in the trash as it was completely disassembled and toss into a Wal-mart bag.. Okay it's back-up and running and it's really cool to the touch, prior the Web Admin was crashing due to the heat. I wanted to run some speed test to see how it goes.

I've just stuck in ANTEC Aluminum USB Dual Fan I have that connected directly to AC using Tomtom GPS POUSB so I get full power under the high fan. It's keeping it cool I can tell you that much as it's going to need with all my 22 ports gear running though it.

Re: Using DIR-615 C1/3.01 with Trendnet TEW-652BRP in N Mode

I've reflash it back to the mod DIR-615/C1/3.01 due to the WAN port option to change the default from auto to 100mbps.

I opened my TEW-652BRP and installed RAM heatsinks to both Atheros chips (14x14mm sized 9 mm thick Enzotech copper heatsinks).
At the same time also I cut some airflow-blocking plastic away inside the opened box in order to improve ventilation (marked with red).
I also keep it sideways (on edge), so that the heated air rises to the vents on the side. (I learned that trick with DI-524, which included nice feet to help keeping it standing on side.)

Picture taken before and after modifications:

So far it has served the P2P load on a 10/1 Mbit cable connection just fine.

And the DIR-615C firmware 3.01, which I flashed it with, nicely supports also IPv6. I have currently a static IPv6 tunnel with proper subnet (80-bit wide, a few billion billion addresses for home usage ), and my home network has full IPv6 connectivity

I use aluminum heat sink, I've added this addition a few weeks ago onto the Atheros WNPU shown above. The other one on the main NPU won't be coming off. The one I am using on the WNPU had came off old Linksys 5-port switch but so did the NPU that has to be grind down using a dremel tool and use the spin cutter I was able to reduce the size of the heatsink by 3 fens to fit onto the WPNU shown about. I now stand this unit facing downwards with the ANT pointing up. Now it handle all wireless devices.

I see you did the same thing as me with the sides? But you still have some blockage.. Just use a flat head screw driver to pull them down then rock it back and forth them just pop off easy

This way the heat goes out from the bottom or like I said turn it around then have the ANT stand upright with the light downward on the stand. Which in this case is from DIR-655 some weather stripping foam makes it easy for it to stand upright..

I am testing the N and G on different laptops walking around the house today. G is coming in with -39dBm / 63% signal which is very strong on the 255mW that's able to reach the second floor about 100ft away. N is coming at -45dBm/ 70% signal again this is in mix mode.

Adding 3 Heatsinks to the Tew-652BRP clone Dir-615 C1

1.

2.

3.

This is how number 3 above looked prior to the heatsink applied on 3/24/09

Number 3 is the latest modding, since both wireless ANT connected here I decided to add 3rd heat sink to reduce excess heat which the tin metal always seem to be hot.

I'll be running some Wireless Mod Test on two laptops one with high power G 255mW and Normal Power N 100mW. Let's see how they do?

Re: Using DIR-615 C1/3.01 with Trendnet TEW-652BRP in N Mode

Time End Mark 5:48PM EST

Completed the test for N.. I was able to go outside and do some testing with N. I was surprise to see how well it did outside the house but inside was another matter. Last year there was only 6 houses with wireless now it's up to 10 and 3 are unsecured and last year there was 3 are unsecured so that number hasn't changed.

I've tested all the bedrooms on second floor and first floor main rooms and the basement family room. I see than in that room the DIR-655 is in there. It's going to be needed for wireless N as the signal is weak only showing 60/120 mostly a 60mbps in that room. Just like the Master Bedroom 60/120mbps. Dining Room/Kitchen area it's about 120/280 so that's not bad. Those with 60/120 has my concern though.

All other rooms are 150/300mbps. Last year I did G with DIR-655 so results were very good using WHR-HP-G54 running DD-WRT. I haven't done it with TEW-652BRP running DIR-615 C1/3.01. Maybe tomorrow or later on sometime. I was more concern with N to see how it did.

So on the second floor I'll need another wireless N AP to coverage the floor 100% signal and link quaility.

I'll flash this soon and report back but now the DIR-655 has to be flashed also with it's new firmware update.. Thanks for the heads up on the DIR-615 update as DD-WRT seems to be charging for opensource firmware...

This is actually funny:
D-Link has now changed the status of 3.10 on download page to "Beta" and hints that there are different versions for USA and Canada (have something to do with compatibility with certain operators????). Sounds increasingly like that they are again embedding some "features" to router firmware.

Hello tipstir,

Can you confirm if you flashed the Trendnet router/AP TEW-652BR by going directly from C1 firmware to C2 firmware on the DLink site, i.e. you did not have to revert back to Trendnet original fw first?

Thanks in advance.

No I re-modded C1/3.01 firmware myself with hex editor also the one for trendnet if you wanted to flash back, that's posted here in this thread just have to look for the link.

No I had the modded C1/3.01 firmware flashed, you need that to flash to C2/3.10NA firmware otherwise it won't work unless it's re-modded but I don't think these newer firmware could be changed so easy.

I ran test using Xirrus link speed and speed test which uses speedeasy I got 3097 for up and 16948 for download. Still the heatsink on the WNPU really keeping the Atheros 9103 chip cooler.

Xirrus Wi-Fi Inpector
DD-WRT Buffalo is showing -51dbm signal G only
C2/3.10NB Trendware is shoing -53dbm signal N only

Difference is -2dbm signal

Just to let you know that when you flash this newer firmware the settings are saved..

Currently I am on wireless N laptop that is getting
SS: 84% QL: 100%

And the story continues:
now the beta status has been removed and there is a new firmware. This is now a new firmware version with 3.10 version number. This time date of the BIN file is April 17th in the actual BIN file inside the ZIP. (and CRC checksum is different from the previous 310/beta.)

Thank you tipstir. I was asking you a very simple question but did not expect a lengthy and somewhat appears to be confusing answer at first. Your second "No" sentence answers me directly. I understand your first "No" answer perfectly because I know how to use a hex editor to "mod" a firmware before flashing in either direction. I hope you don't feel ticked off because of this reply.

Well that's me... Just make sure you have the mod firmware installed then flash the C2/3.10NA. That should do it for you..
