Actually I don't believe the app store app uses the text message authentication method. The app is provided by the same vendor that sets up AT&T's hotspots so I'm sure they have a separate login system.

I was trying to determine if I could use the free Wi-Fi on my laptop (not much different then your Touch) and after some research came to the conclusion, no. Apparently when you connect to the hotspot you are presented with a page where you enter your phone number. Then they text you with a link that allows you to connect to that hotspot.
Since the link is only sent to your phone, I dont think you could use it on your Touch. If you give it a try and have success, let us know. I am curious as well....

oh, right! I forgot about the text message step. I see no way in which an iPod touch could gain access to the at&t hotspot, unless they copied the probably only-valid-for-a-short-period-of-time link into the iPod Touch's Safari Browser. Seems like it could be done.. with effort.

(I think I'm going to take the lazy route, and just use my iPhone to get access. There is a Wi-Fi connection utility available on the app store that makes it a two step process, though (turn on wifi, click connect button in application). The app enters the phone # in the at&t hotspot, receives the text message, and connects with the link, automatically. It's free, for now I think.

Thanks! Unfortunately, laziness has gotten the best of me.

**by the way - the 3G SUCKS!**

have a nice day!

Is AT&T WiFi free with all data plans?

Can I just connect and it will work?

I'm sure that would work, however I'm not sure if they would allow more than 1 simultaneous connection, so it might only be one of you at a time using it.

Ok, I'll try it a different way:

If I give the phone number of my iPhone to someone else who owns an iPod touch, then can they log on to an at&t hotspot (starbucks, etc.) with my telephone number?

Ignore my first post. Please just comment/answer this question. Thanks!

This isn't very clear at all, and if I understand your question; here's my answer:
Why don't you try it?

PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO THE THIRD POST. THIS POST IS JUST RAMBLING. THANKS.

I have an iPhone 3G. It has Wi-Fi (duh-!). I live near about 17 Starbucks'.

If I have my iPhone 3G, and it gets free Wi-Fi from at&t wifi (Starbucks, maybe B&Noble, etc.), then can I get free WiFi on my iPod Touch?... Do I even get the opportunity to enter my iPhone's phone number when I connect to at&t's Wi-Fi HotSpot with my iPod Touch?

(It would take a lot of planning and coordination to be able test this out on my own...)

thanks everyone!
