[Beginner] Burn iPod music to CDs

I'm not a beginner (so to speak) but I have a question about hooking up an iPod to my iMac. I've never owned an iPod but we're having a 50th birthday party for a friend and she would like me to burn music from her iPod to CDs.
So basically how do I do this?

You can create a CD from an iTunes playlist. I'm taking the easy way here doing a C&P from the iTunes Help section:
(Note: you will have to create a playlist first)

Creating your own audio CDs

To create an audio CD:

Select the playlist containing the songs you want to burn to the CD, and make sure all the songs you want to include have a checkmark beside them.

Insert a blank disc and click Burn Disc (at the bottom of the iTunes window).

Select Audio CD as the Disc Format.

Choose your options:

■When you burn a CD, iTunes automatically adjusts the recording speed to the blank CD's rating. However, if your blank CD is rated for a slower speed than the maximum speed of your drive, or if you experience problems creating CDs, you may want to change the CD recording speed to match the CD's rating by choosing an option from the Preferred Speed pop-up menu.

■To change the length of the silence between songs, choose an option from the Gap Between Songs pop-up menu.

■To have all the songs on the CD play at the same volume, select Use Sound Check.

■CD players in some vehicles can display information stored on CDs; select Include CD Text to use this option.

Click OK.

I understand how to do this from iTunes. I need to know a couple of things about an iPod.
1: How to hook it up to my iMac? iPod Nano to iMac?
2: How to either transfer the iPod files to iTunes and burn them to CD. Or just transfer the iPod files to the iMac HD and then burn them to CD?
I would think that transferring the music to iTunes would be the easiest. Then create playlists and burn to cds. I don't know how to do either.

Sorry about that. I just thought since the tunes are on her iPod, she'd have them in her iTunes, etc..

Copying the files from the iPod to another computer and thus, different iTunes library can be done, but can also cause the loss of the music on that iPod if the correct steps are not followed. There are several tutorials on the web, as well as software of the same effect. You may find the following thread from the Apple support forums useful. It has links to several of the iPod ripper programs.

To transfer music from an iPod to iTunes, I've been using an app called Senuti. There are others that are supposed to be good, but this works pretty well, and is open source and free. The trick is to make sure that automatic iPod syncing in turned off in iTunes before you ever plug in the iPod, or you'll end up syncing the iPod with the library (or lack thereof) on the computer. If you have an empty library on the computer you'd end up with an empty iPod.

As far as hooking it up, she should have a USB cable that she uses to sync and charge the iPod, so when she lends you the iPod to make the CDs, make sure you get the cable from her as well.

I second Sentui. I have used it and it works just fine. You do have to have the username and password for her Itunes to play it on another machine though.

I think you mean that the other computer needs to be authorized to play music she's purchased off of iTunes, right? Shouldn't be a big deal unless she's already authorized five different computers. Music she's downloaded from elsewhere or ripped from CDs shouldn't need authorization.

BTW, I've been informed that Senuti is no longer free, but a trial is available.
