iphone battery life sux after upgrade to 2.x firmware

I have a 1st gen iphone and I stuck with the original 1.x firmware for a while. A few weeks ago, I upgraded to the 2.x (currently using the latest whatever it is at the moment) and since then my battery life simply sucks!

Usually I could get about 2 days of life out of my phone there are times when it will just die in hours. This is with it sitting on my desk doing nothing. In fact, I just charged it to full, went out to lunch, came back and an hour or so later I go to check something and I see my phone is "off" because the batter died again.

I am not using push email. I have POP mail configured to check every 30 hour or so. I have a few apps but I can't see them being the problem. Any ideas?

I assume you're using 2.2?

With 2.2 there is an issue with Safari not terminating when the user goes back to the home screen, so it keeps running in the background draining the battery. If you are using Safari, instead of just pressing the home button to exit, press and hold the home button until Safari quits.

man.. my 1st gen goes for days..
another thing that might help is to turn off the "notify me of new networks" (i dont remember the exact wording) option in the WiFi settings..

Are you using Exchange? Mine did this exact same thing to me when a calendar item got somehow corrupted. Fixing it required a profile reset on the server.

If not, I figured it out using the iPhone Configuration Utility. There's a console section in the app you can use to view device messages. Some of them might be warnings or errors. They aren't always helpful by themselves but sometimes a Google of your specific issue can turn up a thread or suggestion from elsewhere.

It's only a model...

It's the mail checking every 30 minutes that has a major bug. It will drain about 10-20 minutes each time it checks the battery. Try disabling mail checking at all and see if it helps.

Going from fully charged to dead in an hour is unacceptable - I don't even think a process running in the background at full CPU would kill it in an hour.

Perhaps the battery has gone bad, and the software update happened to coincide?

At any rate, I would bring the phone into an Apple Store for an exchange. I'm able to go a couple days of normal usage (phone use, music, podcasts, light web browsing) without having to charge.
