| They raised the monthly Ontario Permanent Disability cheque
By $20. I'm now getting $1001 per month.
That extra $20 sure is welcome. Went tonight and bought more food.
I'm in a good mood now. |

| here's something funny, it's a 2% difference...yet you seem so happy about it...kind of funny how people said the 2% GST cut was nothing, yet the 2% you got really does help out, doesn't it? -- Best Marketplace Ever: »www.cbc.ca/marketplace/speed_bumps/

Besides, GST is Federal while the Permanent Disability cheque is Provincial. There's no correlation between both. |

| reply to dennilfloss GST affects only a few items for me (for example, food isn't covered by the GST) and I get a GST return three times a year to compensate for that. So the 2% increase in funding helps me a lot more than a 2% cut in GST. I think this would apply to most poor people. |

Were this Canpol, then I would agree, dj raining on dennilfloss's thread is very grinchy -- It's one thing to listen to an idiot talk. My wife and I calculated our monthly savings after the GST cut and it's definitely been a good thing for us - every utility bill went down by 2%, our insurance went down 2%, all of our monthly non-food/grocery purchases went down by 2%, our entertainment expenses went down by 2%, etc... we figured over an entire month looking at our bank statements, receipts, etc. that it saves us almost $40/mo - that's an extra $480/year raise we didn't have to do anything to get. |

People also tend to forget that part of apt. rent goes to pay GST. I just shake my head in disbelief when some people say "most of my money goes to food and rent. The GST is no big deal for me" |

The GST is no big deal for me" in all fairness, i doubt people's rent went down from the GST...i am sure that would have simply increased the margins by 1%, if that is even affected by GST...i would have thought rent money was tax exempt to begin with, and the rent money would be considered income or revenue for the landlord. -- Best Marketplace Ever: »www.cbc.ca/marketplace/speed_bumps/

I just shake my head in disbelief when some people say "most of my money goes to food and rent. The GST is no big deal for me" I don't about anyone else, but my rent didn't go down because of the GST cut.
And much like the $5 drink and sandwich deal at my local mom & pop sub shop, I'm sure there's many, many instances where a retailer 'absorbed' the gst cut for pricing convenience.
It's simply a modified trickle down effect. Some places pass on the savings, others do not.
Therefore, not all goods and services that apply GST had savings realized. |

You are right that rent did not go down for most but there was less pressure on the landlord to put it up. Don't forget that a landlord pays GST on almost everything he buys for the building and has no way to recoup the tax as other business do. ex. tax credit. |
