Colba.NET ADSL2+ Review (Positive)

I just posted a positive review on my new ADSL2+ service with Colba.Net.

It seems this company is getting a lot of bad press on these forums and while I can understand, I just wanted to share my experience as I had a positive one.

Was running on standard ADSL with AEI.ca and service was top notch until Bell started to throttle their lines. As I found out, Colba.NET have their own DSLAM equipment, i decided to give it a try.

After a rough start where AEI.ca wouldn't give me a cancellation number needed to sign up with Colba.NET, finally managed to get around and I was up and running on November 1st.

The VersaTek modem I bought from them was plugged in and instantly, speedtests was showing 15-16MBIT speeds downstream and 1.3MBIT upstream. This initial success however was rapidly clouded by constant disconnects every 5 minutes (literally)

After 1 whole week of back and forth with their tech support, they agreed to change my modem just to see what the problem was as my line quality seemed excellent.

As I got the new modem home, (another identical Versatek), this time everything worked like a Charm. So far, I've had maybe 2-3 disconnects in past 2-3 weeks with the same constant non-throttled speeds.

At this price, it is simply unbeatable in Montreal. And no contracts!

I know with DSL technology its hit or miss as too many factors come in, line quality, distance from CO, etc... I was fortunate enough (live in Cote-des-Neiges area) and the line quality seems top notch.

I guess its hit or miss and since there is no contract, you can cancel anytime should it not work. Tech Support is hard to reach and so far, I've only had ONE person that was excellent.

If you have any questions let me know...

Dial-up is faster than AEI broadband. I think you need to read the top comment from Jasonk6.

1.3MBIT upstream
This statement sort of calls your whole review into question; unless they've started offering Annex M, the spec doesn't even allow that kind of speed, let alone after overhead.

I've been exactly 38 months with AEI.ca and I've never never had anything lower then 4.5MBIT downstream...nor did I ever had to call their tech support...

I'll try to find my speedtest results and paste it

I want to point out, part of the disconnect problem is likely the modem. If you had a 2wire or SpeedTouch 5x6, it would probably eliminate the disconnects unless of course it's caused by Colba.

I'm curious to know what your line stats are at to give you such high bandwidth. I too am thinking of trying out colba ADSL+ but my line stats are only okay, nothing spectacular, and I'm located in downtown.

I remember there was once a map out there showing which CO's they were in... there's no longer any way of verifying if service is available or not...

Anyone have any insight on this? I'm not looking to switch myself with them just now, but I want to know if I can provide them as a list of options for my uncle or neighbor who are looking to get off cable.

Lucky you, I'm also with them but I get ''only'' 8 mbits :-P

You are on adsl2+ of Colba service. You probably are very near the cote-des-neiges CO. Lucky you

Hi guys,

I just called Colba.net for more info.
They told me the closest CO to my apartment was on the Belanger/10th avenue corner.

That makes it arround 1.5km on googlemaps (the dude on the phone said 2km)

Now, I was told I would possibly not see anything faster than 5 mbit/s from that distance. Is that right? The attached image seems to imply I could be getting speeds arround 20mbit/s.

I am currently having problems with my Acanac DSL connection (they can't get a tech to come fix my upstream noise) so I am looking for other options.

Should I try going with Colba??

If you're having issues with your CURRENT DSL line...chances are you will encounter the same issues with Colba.NET

My line was very clean, i'll try posting some stats tonight

My problem is I'm pretty sure the Bell Tech didn't do a good job setting up my dry-loop as I had great upstream SNR before he came.

Now, there is no fricking way I can get them to come back here. I have tried like 10 times so far and all Bell does is call me saying they fixed the problem (by adjusting my profile only).

Now, if I get ADSL2+ from Colba.net i'll just order a regular phone line from Bell... That's about the only way I can think of of having Bell send a tech here.

:-(

Btw if you do change ISP and you have Acanac for more than 30 days, they will give you a refund for the month left (if your not on a month to month payement)

Yeah, I know that.

Does anybody know what type of speed I could expect from an ADSL2+ connection if I'm around 1.5-2km from the CO?

It's impossible to tell, because the path of the lines on the poles and in the ground don't follow roads. You might be 2km from a CO by car, but 3km by wire.
