Has anyone else noticed the new FAP free hours? Did they sneak it up on us as usual?
Now 5 hours per night. Go to the usage page to see.

| reply to seaweedsl Looks like us HN9000 users have to wait until next month for our hours to change too.
5 hours, I'm actually quite shocked that HughesNet is hooking us up with the extra bandwidth. I hope they don't raise prices again, or cut some package speeds in trade. -- HN9000, Pro-Plus plan, Mac OS X |

| reply to seaweedsl In the page I linked above, they say that our FAP duration will not be extended during FAP-free time.
So if they mean what they say, with our current Pro-plus account, we get about 20-22 hours of FAP restriction once triggered. But now, during 5 of those 20 hours, we still get unlimited downloading at full account speed ! That's something. And an hour from one end or another of the FAP free time is now accesible to many of us for taking care of business whilst under the FAP restriction.
I think that after suffering through growing pains, we are finally seeing the benifits (to KU clients) of a sucessful transition to Spaceway3. Before the transition, they had lots of money invested and nothing coming in on it yet. I imagine that they didn't want to commit to leasing transponders they would soon be shedding, so that many of us were jammed into a higher contention ratio. And then they cut the critical refill rates. Again.
Now, with lots of churn, they have shifted enough of their base over to Spaceway and the more efficient system. THEIR system. Not leased. And the rest of the user base is mostly upgraded to efficient 7000S. For now, at least, there is some breathing room in the contention ratios? Until more leases expire, at least.
Hopefully what we are seeing is they are now focusing on keeping their product competitive. Starband's new accounts are going to keep Hughes on their toes, I'd say.
Things are looking up for us users.

| I think you are exactly right and I am betting that in 2009 they stop all support for 6000 and regular 7000 modems and only commission 7000s and 9000's. And that they keep just enough transponders on leased birds to support 7000s. My 9000 seems to work better each month. I am convinced that they had/have them throttled to prevent the ( It used to be faster) problem they had with the 4000's. -- 9000 spaceway III, 7000S SatMex 5 1270, Dlink wirless |

Probably best to start a thread on troubleshooting your connection. There's always a transponder or gateway or something that sucks at any given moment.
Our connection is great, full speed as usual for middle of the night. -- DW7000,2 watt .98, Small Office, G11, 1050 WHR-HP-G54/DD-WRT

| reply to seaweedsl Weird. I had an automated download last night starting at 3:00 AM of around 900MB. It was finished when I got up at 5:30 but the bucket was 40% empty. Hmmmmm.
Check it again tonight starting @ 2:00AM and see what happens. -- HN7000S/PRO Plan/93W - 1039/.74m dish/1 watt |

I have a 7000 modem, should I get them to upgrade me to a 9000? My utorrent sucks with speeds... 1) Check the hnFAPmon thread stickied to the top of the forum. Probably you need to change some details in the program files to account for updated modem software.
2) 7000 vs 9000 ? Going to the new Ka band system(including 9000 modem) requires a complete new set of gear new antenna etc. Are you ready to buy another sat system? Probably best to stick with KU (6000, 7000, 7000S) while your gear serves you.
Instead, if yours is a DW7000 (vs HN 7000S) go to the Hughes site and check upgrades or whatever to see if they are still doing free modem upgrades to the HN7000s.
Before considering any changes, do some speed tests and check how regular web surfing is to see how well your system is working now.
3) utorrent/bittorrent downloading on Hughes does not work and is no indication of your system's health/speed. You can do a search on this forum (it comes up every couple of weeks) But I can tell you: p2p is severely throttled on all Hughes systems - it barely worked (2-5 kbps) at all when I tried it years ago. Probably all sat providers block or throttle it, not to mention that other ISPs are starting to throttle P2P as well. It's a bandwidth hog and the first thing to go when the bandwidth is limited, it seems.

| I have a HN700s, and web surfing is good, and I know about the P2P etc....I was just wishful thinking...as I read some ISP was sued for throttling P2P and is being forced to stop... I didn't realize it was a whole upgrade to the dish as well as the modem for 9000, so this is fine and I will just have to deal with the P2P issues, although I do get up to 10k sometimes

Might want to consider other download alternatives to P2P (even pay to dl movies?!) and see if it can be scheduled for the fapfree time. There are some utilities that can DL streaming media too...I'm working on how to do that with a scheduler. Looking at Free Download Manager right now...

@direcpc.com
| I use free download manager and it seems like a nice program, not problems as of yet.
Some of the p2p stuff is only on p2p, some programing stuff is all shared via p2p only (wiikey stuff, games, etc.)But in the middle of nowhere, what can you do, just grin and bear it...even if it takes some time. Has anyone looked at the hughes_usage_calc script? I'll look and see if I can fix it, but I am not a great programmer....Thank was a great script to see the usage at a glance...
