D3 modem

If I am currently renting a modem from COMCAST then what will happen when the new speeds hit? Will they contact me to turn the modem in? Or will I just not get upgraded? I am on a 6mbit speed currently with DMC425C modem.

Your current modem should be fine for the upgrade speeds (up to the 16/2 package, for the 22/5 and 50/10 you need a D3 modem).

when D3 hits your area you'll probably be notified by letter and/or email. or possibly see advertisements. but im guessing once you call in to get that package they'll instruct you to swap devices or set up an install.
