| [XP Pro] Cannot Login to Windows
A few weeks ago, some virus/trojan/malware corrupted my userinit.exe file, and probably winlogon.exe file as well. i believe my antivirus software must have quarantined/deleted it.
so when i turn on my computer and get to the logon screen, i try ot logon to my account and it will say "logging on..." but then immediately say "loggin of...", so i am unable to get to my desktop.
Same thing happens when i try to log in the guest account.
right now i am only able to get to desk top in safe mode.
How can i fix this problem? |

| Try booting the computer with your XP CD then type in R for the recovery console. You'll see: C:/WINDOWS displayed; type in: /system32/userinit.exe, then reboot your computer. You should be able access your desktop now. |

1 edit | reply to St0ney Also, you could try in Safe Mode to navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
In the right window make sure the value data of userinit is C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, |

| reply to St0ney I just fixed a machine with this problem. It was a virus they got through MSN Messenger - something about pictures.
What I did was:
1. At the Recovery Console command prompt, type cd system32, and then press ENTER. 2. Type copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe, and then press ENTER. 3. Type exit, and then press ENTER.
And that allowed me to get back.
It's because Wsaupdated.exe was modified:

| reply to St0ney A repair install may be more appropriate.
[OT] I don't know what drake is talking about and Rob 's suggestion is totally irrelevant. -- I used to be indecisive, now I am not sure. |

| Change the boot order in BIOS to boot from CD.
Put in the XP install CD and start the computer.
When prompt "press anykey to boot from CD", press any key.
After a few minutes, the first screen, press enter to install XP. (Not R to repair XP with recovery console).
Follow the instruction, and finally, you will end up in a screen that you enter R to repair XP installation.
Caution, the repair install option may not be available if the system has a higher service pack than the one in the CD. You to have to slipstream the CD first. -- I used to be indecisive, now I am not sure. |

| reply to ChiTang said by ChiTang :A Rob 's suggestion is totally irrelevant. No, it's not. I had the same problem on a PC I was working on.
Kept looping at the log in screen (Logging in... Logging out). It would show the wallpaper then immediately log out. |

join:2002-10-29 1 edit | Rob's suggestion is fine. Fixed that same problems many times ago. With windows logging in and immediately logging out without errors, usually mean what Auggy suggested or a missing/corrupted/infected userinit.exe file. |

| OP's winlogon subkey is pointing to userinit.exe. Rob's situation was that the subkey is modified to wsaupdate.exe. So to fake the login, Rob has to copy the userinit.exe to wsaupdate.exe.
It does not apply here and it is not relevant. -- I used to be indecisive, now I am not sure. |
