[Cable] Why much slower than advertised

1. »/tweakr/block:···a=normal
2. Speakeasy.net 3000 down 400 up
3. »/linequality/nil/2443562
4. RCN Cable, Motorola Modem
5. n/a
6. n/a
7. Win Xp Pro
8. 5MB down / 500kbps up
9. PC on a wireless network using WPA encryption
10. Linksys WRT54G
11. n/a

Essentially my IBM laptop only seems to pull 3mb down. Yet using a different laptop (Dell), it seems to pull down 5mb, exactly as advertised. Why the discrepancy?

Any ideas?

Connect the laptop directly to the router and see what you get.

Connected directly to the router i get 5mbps which is what is advertised. It seems to be something with the Intel Pro Wireless LAN 2100 3B card.

Any ideas what I could tweak to get it to work as expected

Is that a "b" card in that laptop and a "g" card in the other laptop?

Yes the card is a Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN mini card. That card is a mixed card (b/g). The router is set up for mixed use.

Could that be the reason? Seems puzzling considering 802.11b supports bandwidth up to 11 Mbps.

Running the router in mixed mode will cause the router to drop to the lowest speed - "b" mode. The advertised speed on the card (11mbps) is a myth. You will never see that. On a "g" card the best you will see is about 25 mbps.

If the card is dual mode, set it to "g" mode and set the router to "g" mode and not mixed mode.

If that does not do it, get another card.

Yes the router will drop to the lowest speed but the dell laptop still in mixed mode or as you say "demoted" to B is pulling close to 5mbps down wirelessly while the IBM is pulling 3-3.5mbps.

Do you honestly thing a new wireless card would do anything?

Buy a "g" card and if does not work, return it.
