| [Cable] Why much slower than advertised

Essentially my IBM laptop only seems to pull 3mb down. Yet using a different laptop (Dell), it seems to pull down 5mb, exactly as advertised. Why the discrepancy?
Any ideas? |

Any ideas what I could tweak to get it to work as expected |

Could that be the reason? Seems puzzling considering 802.11b supports bandwidth up to 11 Mbps. |

| Running the router in mixed mode will cause the router to drop to the lowest speed - "b" mode. The advertised speed on the card (11mbps) is a myth. You will never see that. On a "g" card the best you will see is about 25 mbps.
If the card is dual mode, set it to "g" mode and set the router to "g" mode and not mixed mode.
If that does not do it, get another card. -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra |

| Yes the router will drop to the lowest speed but the dell laptop still in mixed mode or as you say "demoted" to B is pulling close to 5mbps down wirelessly while the IBM is pulling 3-3.5mbps.
Do you honestly thing a new wireless card would do anything? |
