| HD Box Needs Pro Install?
I was looking on Comcast's site to sign up for Digital Starter + HDTV.
The install fee for the Digital Starter is $30, but when I add HDTV they add an extra $17 installation fee.
Is this required? I know how to connect a box myself. All I want is for them to "turn on" the cable connection that is already installed from the previous owner.
I don't want any Comcast people playing around with my TV or even in my house. Is there a way to get around this? |

What box is Comcast using now for HD? |

They will want to make sure the signal is ok and the tap is all right. Different areas has separate policy -- Caddy |

Not sure what they are using up there. I would call the 800 number, tell them what you want and how you want to do it. Ask them for the local office where you can pick up the box. I bet you could call now and still pick it up today.
caddyroger may be right...but you won't know unless you try. |

I would not go with what rob316 is saying he hates Comcast about as much I don't don't like dsl in my area. . Qwest is ok but I can only 1.5 down and some down time. As it's been mention before it depends on the area. Some will let you pick up the box some won't for a new install. As in my case I had everything Installed but since it was a new install they wanted to make sure the signal is ok. Good thing it was not connected at the pedestal. Give the local office a call. -- Caddy |

The work order you sign off on at install time is clear that returning equipment is the customer's responsibility, so generally the answer is "no". That being said, for truly unusual situations or serious hardship, arrangements can sometimes be made on a case-by-case basis, but "just doesn't want to drive to the Comcast office" isn't going to fit either of those conditions |

| reply to steve1515 Just another thought: Making a phone call to order service may get you a free install and/or other promo deals that aren't accessible on the website.
Just use phrases like, "(competetor name here) offers free installation!" or "I am thinking about signing up for your service if you can provide (insert service here) for a good price."
They will typically close the deal however they can and use whatever they have access to. |

| reply to steve1515 yep comcast's motorola boxes are absolute crap. I wish I could move to another area served by time warner but it's just too far away plus there are too many people wanting to do that. Everywhere I called that has time warner is booked already and has a waiting list meanwhile my paper is flooded with apartments. Seems alot of people are taking my example and wanting to move to time warner area here plus i see dish/directv trucks all the time around here doing installs. 1/2 of my street has directv now, my neighbor even had directv installed wednesday because he was tired of comcast's crap. |

| Comcast's Motorola DVRs are the same as everyone else's Motorola DVRs. Their quality is commensurate with the demand for and willingness to pay for better.
Be sure not to move to where they use Scientific Atlanta 8300HD boxes. They REALLY suck. |

| reply to MadMANN Comcast.com usually has the best offers, especially if you're only getting cable television. If you order over the phone you might get the installation fee waived but you won't get the low price offer. Your best bet would probably see if you can talk to a live chat rep online before completing the order about getting it waived, otherwise just call when you get the first bill and dispute the extra charge. If you're already paying the $30 and are only looking to get the $17 waived, I doubt it would be much of a problem. |

| reply to schja01 said by schja01 :Conversely will Comcast retrieve equipment from a homebound (or just doesn't want to drive to the Comcast office) person who cancels service at no cost? When a tech goes out to do a physical disconnect, if the equipment hasn't been returned, they sometimes will make an attempt to collect the debt (and keep services on) or if it's a disco because customer wanted it, will attempt to recover the equipment.
However, because discos are not "scheduled" and cannot be narrowed down to a time when the tech may show up, it is ultimately up to the customer to return the equipment - at their expense (i.e. drive to the nearest center).
Otherwise, there is a $19.95 tech charge for the equipment to be picked up. It can be waived if, for example, the customer lives 50 miles from the nearest center.
You won't believe how many customers who are disconnected for non-pay and never return the equipment - but are actually entitled to a refund if they did! I have seen accounts where they are owed $50-$100 dollars, but because they never gave back the equipment, they owe Comcast $300-$500 dollars instead. |
