| Bandwidth Usage Estimations I have devoted, literally, close to an entire week to bandwidth usage estimation and I am running into a brick wall. My basic situation is this: I am the systems administrator for a small company that will be running a wireless ISP for a condo complex. I estimate that there will be roughly 100-150 unique users, read homes, that will get involved. If each home had 2 computers that would, on the extreme side, mean 300 computers trying to access the internet (its doubtful though). For the life of me I can't figure out if a single DS3 should cover it, assuming of course that every user wont be on or requiring 45mbit/s to check email. The idea is to provide high speed wireless, but we want to do it right. So, given that limited amount of info, assuming we have a complex of avg internet users, should a single DS3 cut it, or would it be prudent to look at one full DS3 + a partial/ burstable DS3 for overrun during peak hours? | |

@omcastbusiness.net | Re: Bandwidth Usage Estimations Problem solved. Ill just go with 2 DS3's with a minimum commit of 25mbps and then BGP them. So ill get 50mbps with redundancy and then, if needed, we can increase the min commit. | |

It all depends on what speeds you offer the customers and how you control the traffic.
The FTTH started out at 2Mbps up/down and then moved to 5 up/down. | |

| i would try to think about your demographic some. Is it a lot of college/younger people? Made up of more middle aged, elderly?
I think a single ds3 will be perfectly fine because ive heard of some cable companys running entire smaller citys off of a ds3, unless the majority or high usage users then it may be a closer call. If your budget can handle it then as suggested start out with 2 partial ds3's and you can always expand them if needed. | |

| Do you have metroethernet in your area?
If so i would get something like that. You will be looking at 5k a month or so for 100mb.
as for DS3 bursting .. find out what % bursting is charged at. If its 95% expect to be charged.
I would limit how much you can burst .. just going to cost you to much. | |
