| broadband vs other linksys routers
I am switching to Broadband cable, and was looking at linksys routers. Whats the difference between a broadband router and the others? Don't they both support MAC cloning and NAT? Isn't that all I need, or is there something special? I was with Verizon DSL, and the price kept sneaking up, and I got a good pricing package with TimeWarner. Hope I'm not doing the wrong thing. |

| 1) Definition: A broadband router combines the features of a traditional network switch, a firewall, and a DHCP server. Broadband routers are designed for convenience in setting up home networks, particularly for homes with high-speed cable modem or DSL Internet service. A broadband router supports file sharing, Internet connection sharing, and home LAN gaming.
2) A router is a device that forwards data packets along networks. A router is connected to at least two networks, commonly two LANs or WANs or a LAN and its ISP's network.
There really is no difference - a 'broadband' router has some features built in that other routers don't.
SPI/NAT, DHCP, and any other features you want/need - just shop for what you need/want.

| I looked online at linksys, and noticed the different types of routers. Hemet is a small town, and I looked around and the few stores that sell routers didn't have Broadband routers. Just wondering. I am going to drive 30 miles to another town and buy a broadband router, since I don't really need anything great right now. I was looking at the gigabit ones, but I don't really need that speed within my home network yet. Best to go with the broadband one, since is is specifically designed for cable internet, maybe have less problems that way. Thanks for the explanation. |

| Generally they are used interchangeably... I still don't really know what you refer to when saying 'broadband router'...
Does the town have a electronics store at all? Why not order online?
A good general wire/wireless router is the WRT54GL... |

| There is virtually no differences. The wired ones say DSL/Cable while the wires/wireless do not but the feature set is not that different. Maybe some of the 'broadband' routers support PPPoE while the others don't necessarily with stock firmware but that is a small difference imho. I don't think TW uses PPPoE but I could be wrong.
As long as the modem has the ethernet port out then any router will work - broadband or not.
If you post what you plan to do with the internet connection then folks can suggest a router that fits.
Personally - I would get a WRT54GL even if you do not plan on using the wireless. |
