How can we afford not to go 100% FTTP/FTTH ..

Thing is, I don't know how Fairpoint could afford not to push FAST technology.

I feel, tomarrows services will belong to the carrier who both offers it all and offers it great (as in reliable).

In general, customers who buy any one given service but has an interest for the other will usually take all of them to get a good package deal.

The reason I say this is cause I can't see why any of these companies wouldn't immediately see the need to go the fiber route. After reading the thread, I think, for instance, AT&T's U-Verse system is one that seems to be problematic and if Fairpoint is just thinking DSL, maybe with DirecTV co-marketing, that combo will likely never compete. Even if there was ever some kind of wireless solution, I can see it as problematic as the fringe area issues plaguing the new digital tv reception.

Ok, maybe it may happen once in a while, maybe it wont be that bad but the real issue is, once cable upgrades its network to full fiber and no one else does, I think they will swipe every customer one by one. Think about it, would you rather pay $95/mo for the best of all services or $85/mo for so so internet speed and chancey, possibly pixelized HDTV on your $3,000 set.

If every customer went to the fiber alternative, that would be it, the other network would theoretically have no customers; so I go back to what I say to begin with. I don't see why companies shouldn't be banging down the doors of fiber manufacturers to build it out yesterday, my feelings anyway.

Companies need to balance: 1) Ability to raise Capital 2) Internal ability to absorb change and 3) Return on Investment.

I am hopeful in the long term FairPoint will follow Verizon's example and aggressively roll out fiber. However in the short term they are very constrained for reasons mentioned above and will be focusing on rolling out DSL to unserviced areas. Once the smoke settles (in a couple of years hopefully) they will be able to turn their sights to Fiber. But I would not bet on seeing it sooner.

I am with you, tom...

I have been without fiber service (HSI and phones) - again- for most of the past week.

I suppose that I can't complain, as I got almost two and a half months out of the ONT this time. I am still intrigued that we never had problems until last spring, and now nothing seems to stay working for very long...

Well im sorry to hear that you are having ONT problems but you are most likely the minority, the 85% efficiency rating here does speak for itself. I know 2 people who have FIOS, one is my mother-in-law and they both absolutely love it, I don't think they will ever go back to cable, that is, unless cable could offer better.

When I get FIOS and were talking, likely, months, based on what I've seen, I will likely stay with it. There is a difference between arbitrary outages and outages due to poor system design. For example, if I keep going to a website and they are always down cause their server is prone to crashing that is poor system design, a down line maybe once every 2 years.. well that can happen to any system.

I have talked with many and seen many posts here, I shell out a nice piece of change for an HDTV setup, sound system and all its cables; maybe smaller ones in the other rooms. I have seen what others call an excuse for HD, it was pixelized crumby quality I would expect to get with a bad antenna. My point, of most people I talked to, as long as the price is reasonable, they want the best and the heck with the rest.

To all companies deciding on what network to build and maintain while trying to save a buck here or there, got one thing to say: better be sure cause in 15-20 years we will see who the real winners are.

Wireless solutions will wind up with usage caps. Spectrum is too limited always. Once FairPoint introduces them on fixed wireless, it won't be long before a VP asks "Why don't we have them for DSL and FAST?".

10 MHz of WiMAX spectrum can support 34 Mbps of data transfer. Not as good as DOCSIS but when covering large rural areas it's not too much of an issue. OTOH when covering cities, just sectorize and turn down the power, so you have more capacity to go around through more radios on the tower. Yes, wireless has limited bandwidth compared with a wired system, but that's assuming the wired system is available where you live...
