Re: [TWC] NYC - Slow Speeds, Part 2

my representative from TWC emailed me today to tell me there are some changes coming to the neighborhood. Did not give specific about upcoming changes. May be a hardware change or signal but said it will be at the source. Not sure what that means.

Btw, I am getting 16mb down 24/7 now via my Linksys Router.
If I directly plug PC to Motorola Modem, I can get 30mb down, something is little messed up.
you might have hit the router's performance limit. i think there were some threads about this over in the comcast hsi forums (they've had docsis 3 for a while now).

Did the IP range change (24.29.x.x going to something like 74.72.xx) or just the last two octets?
If I can just chime in here - I noticed that within the last week - my IP changed to what you described above. It used to start with 24.29.x.x and now it is something like 74.72.x.x. It wasn't a matter of unplugging my modem because despite these IPs being dynamic, I've kept that 24.29.x.x IP for years - even when I disconnected my modem. Probably at least 6 or 7 years. I think the ip translated to TWC Staten Island or all places. Anyway, last night, I did a speedtest.net and noticed that my history is all gone and that I have started anew with this new IP which appears to read from Ridgewood. Anyone have any idea what happened in the last week? I know the speeds have been ridiculously low at prime time but sure enough, my speeds still dropped to half normal during prime. Granted though - last week and for the last few weeks, I was getting as low as 1Mbs during 7p-11p each night. Last night I was getting 7Mbs-10Mbs, which is about half of my 20Mbs norm. (I still have the Extreme for reasons I don't know why - lol)

I am tempted to go for the wideband, but I am assuming that the network congestion during prime time will still exist which sort of makes it useless for me.

So I recently provisioned my Motorola SB6120 and upgraded to wideband access.

I am noticing it is taking a while to receive a DHCP address now. And I am first receiving an IP from the modem (192.168.100.10) then about a minute later I get the IP assigned from TWC.

This works for a dlink router I have, and my laptop. My Apple Airport Extreme doesn't handle this at all.

Anyone else notice a delay in the DHCP request?

Thanks

NYCNETWORK

i hope you can help me out with this

2nd motorola modem just got provisioned.

It is still behaving the same way as in the video I posted it can keep on going like this for 24 hours and nothing will happen

however I was just speaking with level3 for like 30 minutes trying to figure out why for some reason it wont connect , he said when I connect my Moto sb6120 my down stream is level is like -13 dbmv
and he said this is not within the range of RR , and when I connect the RCA signal is like 2.0 dbmv.

Could this issue with coax cable?
technician will come on tuesday , I hope he can fix something... with this

also I got like already 6 of these on RCA

Update: I just spoke with Leader of the engineering team of time warner cable. He said that they were perfrorming upgrades for docsis 3.0 and he knew exactly what day it started all to happen it was thursday and they are still working on it. This might be the reason why My moto wont connect, and I only have 1 downstream channel , and also why channels would not bond anymore!

Just sometime after speaking with him.

past couple days I was not able to reach speed above.

I will call him later to get an update with my modem situation.

I am unlucky but if someone ever has same issues with their connection you will at least know what's goin on

So I got my sb6120 provisioned, the downstream is bonded to 4 channels (blue light is lit on the receive, and I can see it when connected to my cable modem), but I'm not getting speeds > than 10mbit down.

I've tried with and without router (Linksys WRT54G) but no luck so far.

Any suggestions of anything I can try before I contact TWC Tier 3?

One tidbit, according to the twcnyc website, DOCSIS 3.0 support isn't coming to Fort Greene until Nov 15th. Would that affect my speeds - can't see how, since I am bonded to 4 channels.

what speed tier are you provisioned for? standard roadrunner, turbo, wideband, etc.?

this is my speed test result. i'm on the standard rr plan, using an sb6120 with 4 bonded channels:

the speedtest result says 15mb/s, but in reality when i download actual files, i've never seen more than 10mb/s. which is in line with what i should be getting since i'm on standard roadrunner.

getting a docsis 3 modem doesn't give you faster speeds than you're provisioned for, but what it should do is eliminate or reduce slowdowns during primetime. it has for me. if i were using my old rca modem now, i'd barely be getting 1mb/s.

I'm on standard.

But according to this thread, people have seen speed upgrades while still being on standard, I thought.

Sorry, quoting an old post - but for me, my IP address did not change - I'm at a 24.239.xxx.xxx instead of a 74.72.x.x. Could that be why my speed hasn't increased ?

This is what I am getting on Standard using a Linksys WRT54GL.

Are you on wired/wireless? Are you running any antivirus programs?

I've speedtest'ed the same both w/ and w/o the router - but not w/o antivirus software..

All my machines run AVG.

Not sure, maybe Clinton Hill isn't fully provisioned yet.

What I found with AVG, turn off AVG Active Surf Shield and you speeds will improve a little.

Maybe you confused it with powerboost. You are getting what you paid for. Also, the IP should not matter.

Bytezboy - explain the above, then. RR Standard getting 20 Mbits down.
