| [connectivity] new phone jack problems w/dsl & phones
i just got verizon dsl a few weeks ago and in order for it to work they had to disconnect a rotary phone in my house. after it was disconnected everything worked fine. well i decided to hook up a phone jack where the old rotaty phone was and the tech that disconnected it told me all i had to do was hook up the red and green wires. well when i went to hook it up i realized there were 3 sets of each color and a phone jack only has space for 2. i hooked it up with a random set of 2 of each color thinking it would be fine but come to find out half of the phone jacks in my house didnt work. so i tried a different combonation which made all of the phone jacks work but then the dsl did not work. so i am hoping anyone who has any ideas of what might be wrong please let me know because i would rather not be charged $90 for a half hour for a tech to come out if i can fix it myself. i would very much appreciate it. |

| A quick assumption would be that something is connected to a phone line that goes past that jack in the house. Other than paying someone to come out about all you can do is remove everything that may be plugged in to a phone line within the home and see if the dsl works then. If it does, plug in one item at a time a few mins apart and see if one of them knocks out the dsl again.
A lot of things can be wrong. There may be too much wire already which is knocking the dsl out. There may be an alarm system on the line. A water meter reader. A bad filter even though they may be new. The list goes on. It could even be that there is a short on the line and that is knocking the dsl out as well. That wire probably loops from that jack to a bunch of other jacks in the home and one of them is causing the problem. If the above does not work, you can try changing jacks out one at a time, but by the time you figure it out, it's probably not going to be worth the aggravation. Good luck. |

| reply to srjoea771 yes i put a filter on the new jack. i'm assuming the problem is the third set of wires because there are only supposed to be two sets and different things work when i try different combonations of wires in the jack (ex. one combo makes dsl and half the phones work and another makes all phones work but not the dsl.) |
